The Trap (1966)
Love this movie!
I saw this movie on TV when I was probably about 11 years old (35 years ago!)--and I still remember it very well. There was a local station which, for one solid week, aired it every day--and I watched it every single day! Unfortunately, I haven't seen it since and I don't think it's available on VHS but I remember it being visually beautiful and plot-wise, simply spellbinding, full of action, poignancy and suspense. Rita Tushingham and Oliver Reed are amazing in this. It's such a shame that no one aside from real film buffs have ever heard of this movie. It's a little lost gem that seems to have gotten buried somewhere in the Canadian snow--but if you ever get a chance to see it, please do!! It'll be time well spent.
The Bad Seed (1956)
Deliciously Evil!
Ahh, The Bad Seed. Patty McCormack, Eileen Heckart, Henry Jones--acting doesn't get any better than this. A spine-tingling portrait of a true antisocial (psychopathic) personality--no conscience, no guilt, no humanity to speak of. What makes this movie all the more creepy is "Rhoda's" outward appearance as a cute, innocent-looking little girl with blond hair and pigtails. There is no visible sign of a monster inside. It's very interesting that this movie, made so long ago, brings up the age old question of nature v. nurture--a riddle we still haven't really solved all these years later. We can all take a lesson from Rhoda though, in keeping in mind that people are not always what they seem...and with a psychopath, if and when they strike out, you'll be amazed that they were capable of such behavior--but by then, it might be too late. Ooooh spooky stuff! Highly recommended.
