Newhart: The Last Newhart (1990)
Best Series Finale Ever. Ever
All I have to say is this:
We NEVER saw this coming. Absolutely perfect.
The fact that they hid from the public so well....
Thanks, guys!
The Office: Garage Sale (2011)
You'll Cry 'Til You Laugh
When I started watching The Office, I hated Michael Scott. Some of you certainly know why.
But, there are two episodes that show the real Michael Scott: when they're on the boat and Roy finally sets a wedding date with Pam. Jim is crushed, and he goes out to get some air. Michael is there, and he drops the mask, comforts Jim, and gives some great advice.
This is the second. You know he's going to propose to Holly. But, he's sure to screw it up in typical Michael fashion.
Then he takes her on the tour. So very touching. And you know Holly has an idea what's s going on. The fragile anticipation she shows (fabulous acting).....
Then the door opens and the staff is standing there with candles. That's when we all choke up. The final door opens, all those candles. So beautiful.
The sprinkler coming on is the icing on the cake. Perfect. Just perfect.
Backstrom (2015)
RAINN AT HIS BEST
This is, like Firefly, a series that was killed off by the studio before it could gain traction. Once it did, like Firefly, it has achieved cult status.
So good. Excellent cast. The episode where Backstrom collapses after the girls were found is one of the best moments in TV. Period.
The Big Short (2015)
SPECTACULAR
I picked this up because of the cast.
Great movie. Everyone is a standout. Steve Carrel steals the show.
It's based on a true story, and is a good primer on short selling.
You'll love it.
Split (2016)
Not Even An Oscar Nomination for James McAvoy???
James gives one of the most brilliant performances we've ever scene, and the Oscar Kiddies didn't even see clear to give him a nomination???? THAT really pissed me off! Watch the movie. See if you don't agree.
Night has been a disappointment for many years, but the source of that has been his writing. And his taking on the big budget stuff (his last two movies were just bad).
But, with the exception of the two blockbusters, his directing has always been top notch.
When we saw The Visit, I stood up and said, "Welcome back Night!" When Split was done, I was out of my seat.
And check out the budgets for the two films!!!
If you loved Night's earlier works, this one's for you. It's a watch-more-than-once film.
Sharp Objects (2018)
Will you miss the ending?
I saw this three times before I saw the final scene. I kicked the disc out when the credits started. Now this is normally not like me... I'm the guy who sits in the theater until the house lights come on; it drives my friends crazy, but my family's come to accept it.
But not when it's on my TV. Credits. Click. Done.
Which means I missed the real ending. Twice. The third time, I let the credits play out. I was so devastated I stood right up, put my hand over my mouth, and said, "Oh my God..."
DON'T just put the discs in and go to that scene. Please. Watch the whole series again. Just let the credits in every episode play out.
I'll be watching this again very soon. It's a show that demands multiple viewings; the more you watch, the deeper you go.
Nocturnal Animals (2016)
Too Disturbing To Watch
I love Amy Adams. The best actress working today. I was thrilled to see another AA film.
But I couldn't make it past the opening scene where the family is run off the road by the psychopaths and the mother and daughter kidnapped, screaming for their lives. You know what they will be going though. You know how their lives will end.
I hate seeing women abused; women the victims of violence, especially random, brutal violence. That was it for me. I turned it off.
It shook me up for days. Be very careful with this one.

Amy's range is so spectacular. So much beautiful stuff. She and Christian Bale have such an AMAZING screen dynamic, especially THE HUSTLER; every scene, but especially the scene of them dancing.
I hope they work together again.
