The 355 (2022)
Like Bugs Bunny said: I Like it.
It's probably only a 7.x but WTH.
Get used to an onslaught of gender equality films coming up... and this at least is a lot better than what happened with the Matrix...
One Night in Bangkok (2020)
A thinkers movie
Consider this the thinkers version of Collateral.
Any negative reviews just didn't have the correct mindset to properly appreciate the dialog, that's all. When you aren't in the mood to appreciate good writing you inevitably end up disappointed, especially when it's based on an existing story line.
Don't get me wrong, I loved Collateral, but I thought this was a much more believable film. More human, more visceral, and definitely more thought provoking. Everyone WANTS to be Tom Cruise, but really, it's fantasy and we all love it.
This evoked images of 'what would I do in that circumstance', 'what am I capable of when my family is threatened'?.
I would never want to be in that position.
But if I was, I would like to believe I would spend "One Night in Bangkok".
Hunter Killer (2018)
Scene at the beginning when Gerard is hunting an Elk - lol
My mouth literally dropped at this scene at the beginning where it shows him bow-hunting a Bull Elk in Ireland. There were so many things wrong with this I was dumbfounded:
#1. There are no Bull Elk in Ireland. (Red Deer maybe, but no Elk which are indigenous to N.A.)
#2. At that time of year the bull would have most like shed his antlers already.
#3. He is hunting him with a recurve bow that wouldn't even have made it 1/2 way across that lake.
#4. When he is ready to shoot (LOL), it show a female and doe, so he doesn't.
#4a: Supposedly it's a Cow Elk and Calf, but nooooo, they show a whitetail deer and calf.
#4b: Worse, the fawn is like a month old still having spots that haven't grown out.
#4c: EVEN Worse, Bull Elk don't hang around Cow's (except in the rut), they have their own male groups, and in weather like portrayed the entire herd would have been forced to lower altitudes for food. They don't form FAMILY UNITS - OMG.
7 things wrong within a 10 second time-frame. And that's just off the top of my head. Wow. Whomever was responsible for that scene needs to go back to school.
I give it a 5 since the rest was just meaningless action that wasn't horrible, though the same lack of research and believability is present.
Just laziness? Who knows...
Our Universe 3D (2013)
Average
I really tried to like this as I devour anything vaguely science related. Unfortunately this falls a little flat; and honestly I couldn't even finish it. Mainly it's the narration but as has been said the content, writing, pacing and graphics are sub-par as well. That voice was the antithesis of David Attenborough (who could make anything sound interesting). Was Neil deGrasse Tyson not available? This COULD have been a much better presentation, but as it stands it's mediocre at best. Pick up Cosmos a Spacetime Odyssey with Neil deGrasse Tyson to see the difference. I had believed I was fairly educated until I watched that. Did you know that photons that are created in the center of the sun take 35,000 years to bounce their way to surface (and then obviously 8 minutes 20 seconds to travel from the sun to the earth).
Stargate Universe (2009)
Noisome
Terrible Inane Insulting Soap Opera Disgusting Copycat Disloyal Cliché Arrogant Bad Whiny No Antagonist No Protagonist
Need I go on?
Has anybody added up the ratings? It looks offhand like this should be about a 3 or so but it is at 6.7 That doesn't look right from the amount of poor reviews.
It should be a 1 or a 2 but obviously some people that don't understand what the Stargate Franchise is about, liked it.
I know a lot of fans were rooting for it, but after being stabbed and bludgeoned to death its pretty hard to work up a good cheer.
Stargate SG-1 (1997)
Watch Stargate SGU then watch SG1
I didn't get the chance to watch SG1 for quite a while due to the fact that my initial impression was that it was a bit childish (or better: child-like) in the methods it employed to utilize the Star Gate. It wasn't until the 1st season was under my belt and well into 2nd that I started to appreciate the simplicity for what it really was. An altruistic and natural approach to a very complex and morally challenging situation. And leading that approach was O'Neill. When things got too bent out of shape you could always count on him to do the right thing - no matter what. It's that focus on morality, and the higher pursuit of ethics that defined the underlying philosophy of the show for me. There were lots of times it would have been easier to do the expedient get-rich quick scheme of thinking; but the SG1 held themselves to higher standards. You can understand why the Asgard named a ship after him. After watching the first few episodes of SGU I just had to come back here and leave a glowing review. SG1 defines good entertainment. It showcases the very best of what human kind is capable of and never fails to leave you feeling better about yourself and a feeling of optimism for the future - that good DOES triumph over evil and there IS meaning in doing the right thing. Don't miss it.
