Missed opportunity.
12 May 2024
Yet again, we see all too many times the producers wedged themselves into subject matter they don't belong to.

Here we have Harvey Levin dictating and dominating most of this documentary. We have the two greatest action stars in history presented in a way that seem rushed, chopped up, and overtaken by Harvey.

A very short documentary at 43 minutes. Even though all the rights to the movies were paid off, we could've had a little bit more movie references and footage, it was nice to see the family life of both people.

Harvey went over many of the same revelations we already know. But overall, it just seemed very watered down, redundant, and PG.

We could use a Duterte in the west.
15 August 2023
As a Canadian living in Vancouver BC. Our streets are over run with drugs and homeless. It's been like this for over 50 years and similarly in LA. At least Giuliani cleaned up New York.

Maria ressi is a liberal and head reporter in the Philippines against Duterte's stand against drugs and crime. At least, Duterte has a very strict answer with extreme force to stop this.

We could at least use him in the west, as the liberals have ruined our countries. Maria is opposed to him, but she gives no answer other than love. Love clearly, hasn't been working with human beings as there is no punishments.

I wonder what her take would be in 2023 looking at the outside world. Does she even have her own children to worry about? I hear the Philippines is doing much better after Duterte, rather than Maria's hope and love, empty praises.

Weakest of the three.
24 March 2023
I immensely enjoyed the first two versions of in search of darkness. They covered great 80s horror movies. Mostly main stream. The second one went into a little bit more of the B-movie category which I love.

But this third edition. Covers very poor 80s movies. Even most of the directors and writers admitted they weren't good movies. Yet this almost 5 hour documentary is dedicated to these below average 80s horror movies.

It did get quite political at times. Which was almost reflecting, the politics of 2023 for some reason.

And there was a lot of the foreign movies which was interesting yet they still didn't show the best foreign 80s horror movies. So I found myself fast forwarding quite a lot. I was amused to see great films like death ship, or the troma movies. But when you have the creators bashing their own movies. It makes you wonder did they run out of 80s horror movies that were decent?

Because the first two documentaries there was still dozens left in my opinion, they could've put into the third movie.

I guess this was just their way of showing we can make a documentary about below average movies for some reason. And it did get a little bit too forcibly political over and over.

Not enough footage.
14 November 2022
Not enough in country footage.

I appreciate the efforts of all the filmmakers. This is a very short one hour documentary. I really think they could've used a lot more live footage from Afghanistan as I'm sure they all had the resources and cameras.

But most of the whole hour film is just close-ups of the filmmakers talking. Or still pics from in country.

At the very least they could've had an animated portion to show what happened with the evacuation. Decent soundtrack and editing though.

Other good recommendations for Afghanistan documentaries would be combat Obscura, my fighting season, Restrepo, korengal, only the dead, Royal Marines mission Afghanistan, and operation dreamland.

Up close and personal

Warning: Spoilers
Very well done documentary series with footage from the helmets of Frontline soldiers. Extremely graphic but edited in a way it's not overbearing. Casualties with their legs blown off people getting shot live on camera. And the overall beauty and horror of the landscape of war in Afghanistan.

Only combat Obscura would be a bit more realistic as there was virtually no censorship. This was slightly censored for patriotism.

Possibly the first Vietnam war movie?
7 February 2022
Very gritty realistic infantry war film, possibly the first Vietnam war film. The French defeat at Dien Bien Phu calls for the withdrawal of all French units throughout the country and neighboring countries.

Funny fact is this was filmed in Cambodia during 1965, you can almost imagine the North Vietnamese and Vietcong digging tunnels and fortifying themselves miles within filming locations of this movie.

The opening title gives credit to Prince Sihanouk for letting them film there, and we all know what happens with him and Pol Pot in the years to come.

The infantry battles are very realistic and the film has an anti-war movie approach which is always the best way to go. Similar to Platoon from Oliver stone. This movies Director was a French veteran of that war. The dialogue between the soldiers seems very authentic. This could've been a major hit if it was in color or had a bigger budget. But it doesn't let down, and there's high definition versions out there.

As most Vietnam war movies were filmed in the Philippines which is extremely similar to Vietnam. You just can't help but smile when you see the Cambodian countryside during 1965. Extremely beautiful.

Graphic! Watch with caution.
19 January 2022
By far this is the most explicit graphic war documentary I have ever seen. Only The Dead, and Vietnam Television History come close. Here we see the US Marines trapped in a hopeless situation without the support of the local population. Their comrades die around them.

Totally uncensored and raw. No flashy Hollywood narrative or editing. The filmmaker keeps recording at all times to tell his intended view of the reality of war.

They let their anger and stress out in a number of ways from daily hash and marijuana in the field, to out right anger. There's very intense gory footage of combat casualties and deaths right in front of the camera in high-quality. For those going to point the finger at these US Marines none of them were drafted they all volunteer for their country. And what's happening in Afghanistan right now one could argue was a lot worse than what the US Marines ever did. And if no one's ever lived under the Taliban control then they really shouldn't comment.

This film just throws you right into a war to get a glimpse of what it's like. If one is looking for more of a artsy documentary with a plot maybe stick to the National Geographic Afghanistan documentaries but of course they're censored.

The meanest scariest Freddy ever.
25 October 2021
Honestly when I saw this back in high school in the early 90s I was aware of some of the gay scenes, which didn't bug me as a straight man. Because I was acutely aware of this was definitely the meanest scariest Freddy out of the whole series.

The make up is totally gruesome and evil looking. The soundtrack through the movie was so dark and grimy, and the special effects kills were just outstanding and still hold up today. I was never bored throughout the whole movie it had a really good plot. Some people might be upset that the dreamworld wasn't into effect. But that's the point of a series is to go new places.

And honestly I love watching cheesy 80s high school scenes. Maybe the only thing is they could've thrown in more naked females to match the few gay scenes for all the people who strictly hated for the gay undertones. But I really think most people have never even watched the full movie. This was before Fredy started making jokes and wise cracks or had horrendous rubber like make up. That barbeque pool party scene, can you watch that and tell me it's not outright evil and the definition of horror?

Mean Streets (1973)

Reasons you found it boring, yet we love it.
14 September 2021
Although it does have a high score on IMDb as it should, there's still a large number of people who found it boring, unrelatable, or no plot.

First off let's start with the movie is called Mean streets, so going into it you know it's not going to be a mysterious type who-dun-it, or over the top action flick.

The viewer would need some experience of so-called street life or interpersonal conflict to relate and love this movie, whether that's in a relationship, with friends, enemies or all of the above.

I was never bored the whole time, every single scene had something from my teenage-hood or present adulthood. I think many viewers were looking for comprehensive murder mystery plot. Where this movie is more like a documentary of the streets. If I lived a very sheltered life the last thing I would do is watch a movie called Mean streets. I just wouldn't understand it.

The movie does have a very clear plot to me. You have your protagonist Charlie who is trying to help his friend deal with the antagonist Michael. And then throw in relationships with women, mafia ties, and the streets mixed with great soundtracks and colourful characters, with hilarious ad lib dialogue and jokes. I could easily see how half the jokes and quips would fly over peoples heads, who aren't from that generation or have interest in it. There is some Italian slang, and and very inside NY jokes.

For those type of people they should go directly to Goodfellas, which is much more of a polished comedic action movie. Mean streets is a dark gritty documentary style, that apparently has not aged well for most of the younger generations. I'm born in 1982, and when I saw this in high school in the early 90s I immediately fell in love.
