The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)
Too cool to call garbage
The reason this film annoys a lot of people is that they don't get the utter impressiveness of what has been done by not hiding the low budget animation or the wacky storyline. You have some pretty good actors in this movie, delivering some pretty off-the wall lines with pretty straight faces and that's a thumbs up in and of itself. And in case some of you dweebs who trashed the movie didn't get it, this was supposed to be a comic strip comment movie, which means you can have anything you want happen, that could happen. How else can you have a brain surgeon who also happens to be a nuclear physics genius saving the world from aliens while undercover of being the leader of a rock band. Not that too many people would genuinely be afraid of someone like this kicking them off of our planet - unless your name is John and your garage looks anything like the inside of YoYoDyne.
Plan 9 from Outer Space (1957)
So incredibly stupid it must have been planned that way
This movie has become a cult film because it is so incredibly disorganized and full of incongruities, one gets the feeling that there must be meaning in it. But exactly what is it? Is the meaning simply that it is nonsense in and of itself. Is it really a spoof on stupid vampire and alien movies or is it - itself - just another stupid vampire/alien movie? IS it a great movie by virtue of its being so bad, but so seriously filmed, that it just keeps people coming back to find out whether it has meaning? Or is it that the viewers who keep watching it, are proving that they themselves are stupid for watching and continuing to watch a movie that never had and never will - have any meaning. A great film for overworked minds at the end of the day.
The Heart and Other Small Shapes (2006)
Another Jennifer Reeder film exposing the dysfunctional norm
Another Jennifer Reeder film explores the underbelly of the denial of dysfunction that has become the norm of everyone's life. When ripples of incongruities are culled from life and secreted into an abyss where they are left to go unacknowledged, life becomes a bland,foot-dragging bore of a dance, rather than an impulsive jig. This film has an underlying dual tone of subtle humor and painful truth with a David Lynchian essence that will irk those who don't look beyond the film's surface. If you have liked other works by Jennifer Reeder you will be pleased with this film. If you have not seen her other works, or similar works by other artists, you may find the message in the film difficult to extract.
