Past Lives (2023)

Enchanting ****
8 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Past Lives ------

This movie feels like a moving poetry, trying to capture the fleeting emotions between two infatuated childhood friends/sweethearts in 3 intervals, 12 years apart. Celine Song Successfully embodied the theme of one my all time favorite 'Before Trilogy' by Richard Linklekhter. 'Before' trilogy spans in 30 years with three 10 year intervals, where's Past lives has intervals of 12 years.

Story goes as this. At the age of 12, the young girl emigrated from Seul to North America, and two 12 year old "inseparable friends" got separated. After 12 years at the age of 24, they found each other online, started where they left off. But long distance and separate lives took its toll. They broke connection, girl got married. But the boy couldn't forget, never could settle. At the age of 36, after another interval of 12 years he finally came to NY, to get closure. So, what would happen between them after all this time ? Would old flame burn through everything like wildfire or reality bites ?

They walked in the NY streets that I myself walked, took the ferry to Liberty Island to visit statue of liberty 🗽 just like I did once, walked the same paths that I did. That's why somehow I felt may be more connected and enchanted with these 'Lovelorn' duo. Greta Lee carried this whole movie on her shoulder, showed a range of emotions worthy of her character.

Well, this is the type of well made movie I long for. A whole heck of better than any blockbuster that came out this year. Walking through the NY streets and figuring out 'life', what else could better that?!

Gem of an western !
21 December 2021
1883 ---

Took me just 2 minutes to fell in love with this show. Just like a typical Taylor Sheridan production , magnificent picturesque scenic beauty met with violent human behavior, here in the age of cowboys and Indians in the origin story of the Dutton family, from the outrageously popular modern day western "Yellowstone".

Story began with the ultra violent Indian attack on a wagon in the great plain of the west. The poetry, the background score, the cinematography, the character buildup up and acting met with grace and brutality in such a way that there was no way anyone would be able to pass it without falling in love.

Will be eagerly waiting every week to find the next episode. For every western aficionados, these has just been the snippets of your wet dream.

It's actually not half bad !
31 May 2020
Frankly, I started way it without any expectation. Just the storyline seemed intriguing. I know there are some plot holes, but considering the budget and production house it's pretty decent outcome. Stars gave solid performance, the locations were eye catching. Story of global corporate espionage ring added with a long lost love interest added the spice that was needed to carry the show.

Might not be a HBO/Netflix/Prime production standard but considering everything, it was decent. May be more than decent! Figure it out !

Messiah (2020)

People should less serious and enjoy the show as it is
2 January 2020
Messiah

Netflix dropped this bomb at the very 1st day of the new year. From the trailer it was very clear that it was always heading towards a highly controversial show, and it took the hard path anyway. It ventured the prophecy of the Abarahamic religions, that a savior was gonna come to save the humanity and show the right way. But is he the savior of humanity or the destroyer of it as also promised in the holy scriptures ? Is he a fraud, a trickster, a false prophet or the truly Devine one ? If he is the promised one, how would we recognize him? What would be his marking ? How would we perceive him, specially in this modern age ? If a true to life prophetic figure comes to earth, how would we go on about him ?

This new show tried and I don't think they failed, not at all! Definitely definitely a binge worth show. Casting was stellar, acting was believable. I like the way they want to overhype anything, may they weren't bold enough in this current political climate. But I like the way it was done. I'll definitely wait for the second season to drop, and from the looks of it, Netflix wouldn't stop it soon anyway 👍👏👌👌

My rating : 8+

Bayhemism extremism !
15 December 2019
You don't want expect from Michael Bay to pull off a Scorsese ! You want Bayhem and there's tons of it. Was there a possibility to be better ? Of course! Could have been a lot better. But would I loose any sleep over it ? Nope ! It's a fun escape, designed that way. At times it seems shallow and over the top but that was the point ! Yacht magnet action sequencing was very very good!

Want some no brainer fun ? 6 Underground it is !!

What a magnificent start !
3 November 2019
I thought the gimmick of a blind world wouldn't be enough for a decent show, but after watching the first three episodes, I think I might be wrong ! It was well thought, very well designed and very beautifully cinematographed in a paradise like primordial world and every bit of brutal savagery seemed every bit necessary and I can't think of any other series at this very moment who would needed this much ! Nothing seemed over the top which was the utmost success of this production that first comes to mind! I'll be waiting when the whole season releases. oh ! And I forgot to say anything about the acting, it was perfect! The casting was good. And the hauntingly mind blowing mountain range !! Ah ! Wish I could hike and camped there for a whole year !!!

Probably the best LGBTQ movie I've seen in years !
28 October 2019
Although BITWC might be the most audacious and technically brilliant lesbian movie I've ever seen, but the simplicity and creative screen play of this little known movie just blew my mind. Being someone from a conservative society I understand the clash of generations in a recluse or secluded guarded judgmental community. This movie might seem lighthearted but the beautifully crafted storyline and brilliant performance from all the leading ladies was just perfect.

Wanna watch a feel good 2000ish cross cultural generation gap overcoming societal norm breaking light hearted movie ? This might just the one Doctor has ordered !

Joker (I) (2019)

Too much fuss ? May be a tid-bit ??
7 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Way too much fuss ! Is it a good enough movie? Sure ! It has its moments. But is it that good To stumble upon a rave review in every other second on social media ? Don't think so either. Joaquin Phoenix is a wild actor and as per his credentials he acted the hell out of an unhinged whacky character, the way he usually does. But for a movies perspective, following a single character throughout the whole movie even if he is the lead protagonist, restricts other characters buildup and it's not necessarily a good thing. 99.99% of the time Joker was infront of the lenses and sometimes it could be a little tedious even if it's Phoenix, u know! no breathing room for the storyline to grow.

Joaquin Phoenix: 9/10 Joker movie: 7/10

Cinematography was beautiful, no doubt about that. Storyline, not rich enough. Dialogues, don't even start ! Now, can u tell me anything that's new in this movie?

Plotted may be in a New Yorkish 80s era Gotham, combined two Scorsese classics Taxi Driver and king of comedies, blended Charles Bronson's famous anti heroic and public pleasing Deathwish shootout at subway and a subsequent public revolt. What else ? To prevent any IP lawsuit Todd even brought De Nero to negate that criticism and Scorsese as a producer (even though he dropped himself), he outdid at that part I give u that. So what's new in this movie that I should hail now ? I can tell tons of great anti establishment movies far better than this which never received any limelight , better anarchist than this movies Joker. Oh heck! even Heth Ledger was a better one in that regard.

Product of an opressive regime/failed society, vigilantism, showdown at live tv and a successive masked vigil showdown against establishment, does it sound similar ? If it is, then u r right my friend !! May be from "V for Vendetta " ?!

So why should I hail this movie? No brand new concept or ideology, no groundbreaking nothing. One linear storyline told from one single point of view. Only a very very good actor at the epitome of his career.Have I missed anything ? Some odd gimmicks could never make up for the lack of it. Quality dialogues, not even start !! At best it should get a soft 8 at IMDB, not what I'm seeing right now.

Unbelievable (2019)

I would be glad it was truly unbelievable
15 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Unbelievable

Its the name of the new true crime Netflix investigative series. Story of a teenager named Marie' (portrayed as Marie Adler) who has been sexually assaulted, raped and in an astonishing turn of events later on pressurized to recant her statement, had to admit in an open court and receive punishment for "false allegations " before some years later vindicated as the real perpetrator got apprehended. This years best known limited edition series's has all been dark themed. From Chernobyl or Now they see us and now to this. But I have to admit, this might be the most difficult amongst all of them to watch.

The subject matter might had something to do with it, it's not an easy watch. But it had to be more than that, specially the writing and Kaitlyn Devers phenomenal portrayal of Marie Adler. I'll go on about it later. First I have to say something about the ensemble. So powerful casting all around ! Being guilty of in love with the crime investigation genre to a obsession, I've been waiting for this series since I have watched the trailer. Two lead female detectives might have drove the show, but the central character, the driving force of the series has always been Devers (Justified,Booksmart). The range of emotions or lack of she showed portraying the character was too much to handle. Never too melodramatic never too shallow, just the expression of her throughout has set an underlying tone to the whole show. U wouldn't even remember when you have started to root for her so that at least she could find a modicum of justice in a world that has been so injust to her through her whole life. So many senior actors present and an upcoming young actor stole the whole show ! It was just incredible!

Most of the investigative tv shows from Law&order franchise to CSI or Criminal minds, police procedure has always been the Centre or driving force of the show but here it's different. The human element behind the scene, the empathy or lack of empathy in the work has been shown in a so bright contrast that you have to admit, it's not just another run of the mill investigative show. It's different, it's better, and a definite binge material. Don't miss it.

What I think has happened
4 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It's very edgy, flashy, new and adventurous post 9/11 big brother thriller. But at this point it seems like a Bourne/Manchurian themed premises. Seemed like if he asks someone to not go and still he/she goes, he can't resist violence. He attacks. Let's see if I'm right or wrong in the next few weeks.

Not everyone's cup of tea
27 August 2019
It's a very hard character study. Self loathing, love, betrayal and twisted life is gruesomely portrayed here with no compromise. Not everyone can go on making this movie, I'm just glad I found it. Top notch job guys. Specially Lucas, Bissett and Hall. They gave everything to their character. If you think of yourself as a hardcore cinephile and love character study, go after it. If not, then plz don't try. It's not for you, you won't stay on for long either.

The Boys (2019– )

Amazon pulled off a "Netflix" spectacularly !
27 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Around the world we have a global obsession of superhero comic characters even though they are not real, the billion dollar industry about them. Would you even imagine the franchise we would have to endure if they came into real life! This franchise would become The One quite easily. Here comes this The Boys !

Easily might become the greatest first season of A Superhero TV show ever, competing with Marvels Daredevil ofcourse. But this scrip is so freaking impressive, the over the top violence and gore along with great dialogues and brilliant acting easily brings it to the top. i would be really surprised if the two KIWI lead protagonists, Kurl Urban and Anthony Starr wouldn't get nominated for best actors in a leading role, specially Starr. He was absolutely brilliant as the lead antagonist Homelander. That says something for a superhero movie, wouldn't you say !

Was waiting patiently for this show, and living up to that hype was not easy. Had to binge it at once, it's that addictive. Wow! Before even release, Amazon Prime ordered a second season even though the production cost might have been astronomical I would imagine. They were that confident, this was that good. Watch it, you'll enjoy !!

Intrigued!

Came here for Carla Guino, such an amazing versatile actress. But then came the storyline, I'm intrigued!

Decent casting, noir environment with an old school crime drama feeling. Not a bad start.

Deciding to follow it through, let's see if they can keep the quality up.

Just the casting and crew members should put a chill in your bones! Boston crime syndicates and their affiliation with law enforcement against a renegade black attorney and rouge head case FBI special agent Bacon in The late 80's ! The perfect recipe for madness !

The producers from the award winning The Town should be interesting, as it's also around the bank heist Boston crew like the movie !!

Brilliant remake, just as good as a new one
10 March 2014
To be honest I wasn't optimistic at all. Les Revenants was a brilliant and unique creation, award winner for International Grammy. I couldn't see any way how they could re-enact that brilliance. But after watching this 1st episode, I must admit this one isn't bad at all ! They expanded the boundary, brought their own twists and made it something new. Whether u have watched the original or not, that won't affect at all! Les Revenats had an Godly location, this one might not have that. But they tried with some new characters and aspects to make up for it. While you are at it, you better enjoy the ride ! Its gonna be shocking and bumpy !

Another brilliant Scandinavian Serial Killing show
1 March 2014
Finished watching the only season of this Danish TV serial which is being remade for US right now. Every episode is almost 1.5 hrs, characters are same but every episode comes up with a new serial killer to analysis and catch. A female lead detective pairs with a talented but problematic forensic psychiatrist to catch these killers. They all have their share of personal problems to handle. Katrine(Detective) has been abused as a child by her stepfather and Thomas(FP) always grasping to retain balance between his work or job that he desires and his family.

Now the stories. Every serial killer is different, everyone has their own way of thinking and different way of killing. Thomas analysis the methodology of the killer in his own way, links up the puzzles that help Katrine catch the killer. Some stories are brilliant, some are average, but overall there were lots of excitement and intelligent stuff. After watching so many hightech series some might seem quite amateurish but actually they are not. Ratings might not seem that much convincing but its not as bad as rating says.

There's one more thing. I know the Scandinavians were amongst the first to give women empowerment but three Scandinavian serial killing TV series I watched and all three of them has the female lead protagonist. I am not being misogynist or against women empowerment rather the opposite, but sometimes it feels a bit cliché. I love Scandinavian crime production and I can't but to be partial!

Overall my rating: 8/10

Fleming (2014)

A rare vintage Art-house production in TV
16 February 2014
Rarely TV serials adopt the idea of 'Art-house' production, and this is one of them. Another gem from the BBC production. Story of the creator of 007 who himself is a legend in thus arena, perhaps one of the most influential one. At first glance I thought it contains style over substance but in time everything worked out just fine ! This is not just another espionage story of WWII, rather the script mingled the personal and professional life of Fleming brilliantly. Dominic Cooper was an excellent choice, he can play the hard-boiled spoiled brat quite fascinatingly, we all have seen it in 'The Devil's Double'. Lara Pulver was naturally brilliant in the seductive dominatrix role as usual. Only if they could let the 'blond Muriel' stay a bit longer !

Its not easy to bring-up the story of someone with so many 'issues' meticulously, but they tried and didn't fail ! Its no hardcore action flick like 007, rather vintage flavoured of WWII, the set decoration was quite believable. And most of all, this series is 'Hot', and hot means 'Haught' ! Waiting for the final instalment !

The Fall (I) (2013–2016)
8/10
The devil lies in the detail, stark-gory-scary detail .
3 February 2014
I believe you all are aware of the quality of BBC productions. At a stretch just now finished another one of their brilliant installments The Fall - TV. The success of a psycho serial killing show depends on the depiction of showing the intensity of the fetish perversion of that killer. The Fall did that job meticulously. Beautiful n Gorgeous Gillian Anderson was the best thing that could happen to her role. There is an unique vibe and glitter in her presence that showcase a staggering personality, that is what called a real show !

The most perfect job that the show did was not exaggerating or over- qualifying the killer, nor glorifying or idolizing his motives. A serial killer always doesn't need to be recluse. He could a loving father to his children, a loving husband to his wife. He has to deal the redundancy and mundane cliché of the day to day life. But at the same time he could do the 'Doubling' perfectly. But when the hunter meets his perfect opponent, he could really get 'hunted' ! The devil lies in the detail, stark-gory-scary detail. And the details of this series parts it from others. You wont feel rush like the traditional USA releases, it takes time to build the story in UK production. But less dramatization and raw nature of the fetish was something 'sickening to the stomach' was present here that you won't be able to deny. This is dark, really really 'DARK', and if you don't have the stomach for that, don't come near here !

Twin Sisters (2002)
9/10
One of the best WWII movies of all time which is definitely underrated and deserves more attention
12 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
After a long time writing a review, actually a short one. I thought I have watched almost all great heart wrenching drama about the people around the devastating destruction of WWII. But I guess I was wrong.''De Tweeling'' aka ''Twin Sisters'' is an absolute tear jerker. Story of two orphan twin sisters who were separated at childhood, one lived in Holland living a posh life and other had to live in Germany in a severe abusive atmosphere. WWII came, altered their lives in a most possible devastating way one can imagine. This is a story of love, heartbreak, tragedy and war in an epic proportion. As you can see its based on a worldwide best-seller, its almost impossible to portray and bring up the story in big screen by its level and proportion, they did a very fine job. And perhaps this is the best Dutch production I have seen so far.

Don't want to give any spoiler, so I shouldn't go any further I guess. But the actresses performed the twin sisters in different stages of life did excellent job. One of them will remind u the prime period of 'Audre Hepburn' and wouldn't that be extra something !

Story evolves from different point of view. It will make you asking the question again and again whether the normal people of Germany really knew what was really going on ? Why did they march under someone as crazy as Hitler ?? Did they really have any other choice ?? I will leave them out for the audience.

The choices we make shapes our life and defines who we really are . But under different circumstances, would we make the same kind choices ?? Is it really up to us or we are the victim of our surroundings ?

The movie that moviechoholics long for a long long time
19 June 2013
A Place After a long long time I am being compelled to write a review on some movie, and thats this. U can easily call this one beautiful piece of a multi layered movie. the Dark and Gothic vibe of this one gave me chill big time ! This story is told in three phases . One robber, one cop and their sons .

Rayan gosling successfully tore down his good boy image a long time ago, but outdid himself in this particular character as a hard boiled tattoo covered stuntman come bank-robber, on the other-hand an emotional and affectionate father. In the second face comes the Hangover star 'Bradly Cooper'. Hangover revived his career, no doubt in that, but recently he is showing his true class and ultimate potential. He is also tore between his ambition and being honest which is caused by grief. Then comes the third phase of the movie including their sons, their legacy. This is the most significant part of the movie . The ending proves how the son become their fathers, completing the circle of their ultimate destiny. No one can avoid that. Eva Mendez did a great role, Ray Liyotta as a dirty cop performed a good score too.

To me, the outstanding success pf this movie is its Background score and Gothic atmosphere. One of the best art-house movie of recent times after Gosling's 'Drive'. The deep and intense character study was spectacular. Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond The Pines is undoubtedly a visual odyssey, if nothing else. This film is about,is legacy, and passing the torch from generation to generation. This is the movie that movie choholics long for a long long time .

Persona (1966)

Experience of a lifetime ....Pick of a Genius mastermind.. a true Psychological masterpiece
10 March 2011
I don no how This movie made me impulsed to make a review..this is an experience of lifetime ! Probably this is the best direction and camera-light work I have seen in a movie so far . This black and white classic is one of the most original and genuine psychological masterpiece of all time, thats for sure !

Now i come back to the point of this movie. The most amazing thing of this movie is that you can explain and see from two very different point of view ! both the lead characters are so complicated and strong that you can't say what's the lead and whats the supporting character ! From the very first appearance of this movie you will see some bizarre and symbolic scenes , traditional from Bergman. After that, the first appearance of the actress will give you many questions of what you will get the answers at the last of movie, in the meanwhile the suspense arise gradually that what happened to her for this kinda unlikely condition ?? why did she made herself mute and detached from the outsider world ??she certainly has her own very reason and U can do nothing but only respect her from that. But would it be pleasant or praiseworthy for every other person ?? There comes the second point of view from the second character ! She doesn't know many things outside her life, she is only a nurse. But does that mean she can't have her own very feelings about all things, own point of of view, above all her own ''persona "? She feels like 'The actress' is her idle, though she doesn't wanna talk but that can't her aloft from expressing her very personal feelings only to her what she can't tell everyone. Ultimately she became very close to her, but she only saw the surface of the mentality and everything that that belonged to her, but then came thee twist ! When she finally got to know what she really is, she can't idolize her any more ! All the time she wanted to imitate her, but when she finally got some success in this matter, she can't like her anymore! What will happen now?? What about her own "Persona" ? what she will do now ?

Ingmar Bergman is a real genius. He pulled every strings so carefully and subtly that you will be stunned and mesmerized how he could do it !I wish I could give it more than 10 ! Feel like seeing it again and again!

Another adrenaline rush explosive thriller from the koreans
9 February 2011
Korean thriller makers are making a splendid job now-a-days, they have even succeeded the Hollywood thriller makers in this specific genre..The Man from Nowhere' is a perfect example of this. Anyone might think this is a mix of 'Leon:The Professional' and 'Man on Fire' where a highly trained but troubled person tries to protect a child, but this movie is more than that. There are many short but strong stories nicely fabricated that will keep You watching the total movie in a rush! Now come to the story. A mystery man with no past links suddenly becomes involved in a drug transport because of a child being kidnapped and unfortunately that child was the only link of him to the outerworld .So had to comeout from his own hideout and save the girl and find out the persons behind it. He has to defy the police as they are after it too, at a point the sad past life comes to daylight and it was well understood about his strange behavior of everything. This rouge so renegades the force and takes the action by his own. The stylish BOURNE looking action scenes specially needs to be appreciated. But I m not giving it the highest rating only its lacking of showing the touchy emotions in the best way..it was excess .Silence play a better role than words in some situations, it needed that. But the overall movie was simply sublime.reasonable violence was shown here..it was logical. Some funny characters and parts are nicely putted into, that enhanced the color and variety of the movie. But I am getting addicted to this korean thrillers." Memories of a murder', "Joint security Area', Vengeance trilogy( including OLDBOY), Infernal Affairs trilogy, 'The Chaser','Thirst','The Bittersweetness of Life', 'I Saw The Devil'..the serial is getting longer and longer..keep it up !!
