Weird but in a good way
5 January 2011
I didn't really know what to expect with this film. There wasn't much media hype or anything of such so I thought I'd give it a go anyway.

I was a bit unsure of how the storyline was going to set out. The general pace of the film was quite set out as I didn't feel as if there were any parts that tend to have dragged on.

The character development was good, however, some characters such as Emily could have had a bit more involvement during.

Some of the acting was a bit tinny at times, especially at the start but it seemed to ease off as the story became more involved.

The ending was a slight shock and did in fact have me on the edge of my seat which I was incredibly surprised at!

The creepiness of Aaron Johnson's character William was what did it for me. I think he played it pretty well.

Overall, if you're looking for a film which incorporates some modern day technology and a bit of a nut job, this one is for you!

First hour good...second hour bad
28 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I'd already heard reviews about this film saying it wasn't very good and i did warn the people i went with but they insisted we should go.

By the end, the wished they had listened to me.

The first hour, when Julia Roberts is roaming around Italy was actually very good. The way she picks up the language and is soaking in the culture brought a warmth to the film. However, once she left it just went downhill.

Fair enough she is meant to be going through a very troublesome time, but this film just dragged on and on and on after the first hour! I can't believe it was on for 2 hours and 20 minutes! I think they should have cut out a large chunk of the part from when she visited the meditation temple location as, to be honest, didn't really do anything for the storyline.

The only good thing about the second half was the part where she emailed all her friends to ask for donations rather than Christmas presents which was quite touching. Apart from that, I was close to sleep.

This is one of the only films I've actually almost walked out of near the end due to boredom.

A giggle and a jump!

Warning: Spoilers
I first saw this film when it was first released in the cinema back in 2009. Not really knowing what the film was about to begin with, I didn't really know how to take the mix of horror and humour, so I left the cinema in quite a confused state. However, after watching it a second time round, I enjoyed it MORE than i did the first time.

Yes, some settings, such as the graveyard scene are set incredibly clichéd, but I did like the originality of the script. The lead, Alison Long, really didn't float my boat but I don't particularly like her as an actress anyway. The gypsy woman I found very scary, even just to look at!

Being an incredibly big horror buff, I actually enjoyed this film a lot and thought it was a refreshing change to see something other than "slash, sex, teen dead": the vicious cycle that is constantly being regurgitated on our screens at the moment. Focusing on a more sinister demon character which is causing the havoc is REALLY what sets the scary tone to this film, as fear of not being able to control what is going to happen and not being able to fight it is what makes me even it scarier.

If you like gore, suspense and a bit of something different, then this one is for you!

Lack of creativity for such a new idea
25 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
For someone who is a great lover of all things horror, I was very pleased when i heard about this film. Finally, a new creative idea, i thought!

Needless to say, I was wrong.

Typically being set in a very clichéd style: Girls break down in the words, in the rain, in the middle of the night, with no signal on their phones and end up getting drugged by some random man. With the storyline being so new, I really was hoping there would of been a LOT more imagination having gone into the script as I found it very flat and boring.

The "victims" themselves were also quite tedious. For example, the one girl who had her chance to escape seemed to take actually FOREVER! Fair enough she was dragging her friend along, but it was so slow paced i just wanted to turn off.

The surgery scenes themselves did make me squirm a bit and the overall "human centipede" idea was quite shocking to see. But that was pretty much it and you knew what was coming most of the time as the trailer pretty much summed the entire film up in less than 3 minutes!

The ending, was DREADFUL. Seriously? Everyone just starts getting shot? How can they even transform that into a sequel then?!

I only watched this film to see what all the hype was about, trust me, it seriously isn't worth watching. Wait for a boring night in and rent it, if you can be bothered!

A fresh bite of enjoyment
3 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
After hearing so much negative feedback on those who had seen this film, I decided to give it a try for myself. And I was pleasantly surprised, I really did love it! It clearly isn't going to win any Oscars, but it is simply a good, witty and slightly jumpy film. It should be viewed as a cross-genre film rather than purely just horror.

The screenplay was well written, with the banter between characters being rather witty and clever. The overall characterisation was well cast, with all playing each part very well. Amanda Seyfried was the perfect fit for her character. Seeing her go from a held-back geeky friend to the more edgier, murdering type by the end of the film didn't seem fake nor cheesy. Jennifer's character really wouldn't have fitted anyone else but Megan Fox for this role. Obviously she was cast due to her looks but still, she plays the self-centred teen very well. (I was beginning to hate her half way through!) Adam Brody's appearance was quite a shocker to say the least. His image reminded me of a young Brandon Flowers and he played the egotistical yet dark character of Nikolai well. He definitely deserved what he got at the end!

Definitely not to be taken serious! But if you're wanting a film to sit in on a Saturday night to watch for a bit of fun, this is definitely the film for you!

Slightly surprised....
3 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Throughout the majority of the first half of the film, I kept comparing it to the original which wasn't good. (It has been a few months since I've seen the original to be honest). However, I was slightly surprised at thinking at the end of the film that it wasn't too bad.

I thought although Jackie Earle Haley did try his best as playing Freddy, I felt that he lacked the scare factor that Robert Englund had previously brought to the screen. His appearance in general was rather off-putting, in the sense that I didn't feel he was a genuine Freddy as he looked completely different to the original.

I liked the fact that there was no sex during the film, which normally ruins perfectly good modern day horror films, due to being filled with unnecessary scenes. The way the storyline mainly also focused on Freddy and the story of his past rather than mindless killings throughout the film is what I think did it for me, as I wasn't just sitting through a film which had killing after killing of mind-numbingly boring teens screaming their heads off throughout, there was some back plot.

The ending was also a very big surprise and a good one at that. I enjoyed the fact that this re-make was no a simple complete re-adaptation of the original scene by scene and that certain scenes in the original weren't used. (Such as the famous scene with Johnny Depp where he is killed and the blood pours from the bed onto the ceiling).

I must admit, I've seen worst of re-makes. I'm still a big fan of the original and although I think Freddy has lost his touch slightly with the change of actors, if Englund had taken the place again, he would have just been seen as a sell out.

Surprised...but in one hell of a good way!
2 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I began watching this film with the frame in my mind that it was simply going to be another spoof-style comedy film, similar to that of Superheroe movie which was rather bad. By the end of the movie, I was in fact rather shocked at how much I did enjoy it. A first in a while I must admit! The character casting was perfect. Aaron Johnson's debut was fantastic, I didn't even realise it was him at first! If I had known beforehand I more than likely would have been slightly dubious, but it worked well. Christopher Mintz-Plasse's role also did work well, however I thought he would have been involved much earlier in the story than what happened. I previously watched Chloe Moretz in '(500) Days of Summer' and with her having such a small role I didn't know whether or not she would be able to pull off such a character she is portraying. Again, proved wrong! She fitted like a glove and I really couldn't see anyone else playing such a stronger role. When I realised Nicholas Cage was involved, like Johnson, I was slightly unsure about whether the 'serious' tone of his previous acting (due to many of the cast being more young-newer faces) would kind of wash out the film but it didn't.

The certificate however I thought was a bit risky for UK cinemas and think it would have deserved more of an 18 rating, compared to 15. The violence in it was rather graphic, which I did find a bit off putting at times, but then again, I wasn't really expecting the more gang-violent crime that was involved within the story.

Overall, it was a fresh new film which I think was seriously needed in the films of today as FAR too many re-makes keep being regurgitated onto the cinema screens! If you like violence, a bit of humour and something new...then Kick-Ass will blow your mind!

A Good Movie but the Hype was a bit Overkill
27 November 2009
*Spoilers are contained*

(I must note, i am a bit of a sceptic when it comes to the paranormal as I have previously looked into research around such subject which i must admit ruined the imagination of the film for me a bit :/ ) As an avid fan of all things horror, this was a good film to watch, as it gets away from the typical norms of the 'teen slasher' routine which is constantly appearing on our screens, time and time again.

The general plot was good, the idea of there being a demon which has followed the female character Katie around since the age of eight. However, what i was disappointed in was the attempt usage sub plots within the film.

The Ouija board scene was okay, however, i felt as if the story of Diane could have contained more of a deeper storyline compared to that of a simple website reference of 'oh yeah, the same thing happened to her'.

Both scenes in which the photograph in the attic is found as well as the smashing photograph of the wall could have been developed a little further, as they just seemed to happen, the couple were like "OH MY GOD" and then that was it.

Also, the night vision scenes in the bedroom were very well made, with the amount of tension and build up of activity happening over a vast periods of nights, however, it seemed as though in some parts, as soon as any movement was heard, either Katie or Micah woke up and reacted too quickly, loosing the scare element which i think could of been heightened much further.

Even though i went to see this (this evening in fact) with a sold out cinema house, thankfully the rest of the cinema watching were all of an older, more mature audience, which eliminated anyone ruining the (you could call it) 'illusion' of the scares during the film.

For me, I did like the ending (as i did find myself hiding behind my hands at one point ha) and i thought it was a clever way to end the film. I am intrigued to see what the original ending was though! Regarding to actors, i felt that both Katie Featherstone and Micha Solat had really good chemistry on screen and as well as acting incredibly well in these roles, they are what made the film. I think that if they had hired any well-known actors for such parts, it would have lost its appeal and seriousness almost immediately.

Overall, I did enjoy this film. It was good to see it being filmed from a personal point of view, emphasising the realism of the movie, which, without a doubt was the key element in making this film work. The actors worked well, the scares were there, I just think that the mass hype that surrounded this film really did give me incredibly high expectations for it which were slightly disappointed at some points.

But that's just me! I'd still say go and see it ha :)
