Parasite (2019)

clever and funny in places but

Enjoyed this move, smart and with heaps of character. but for me it went downhill in the second half as it went from plausable humour to silly and violent slapstick.

Great directing and acting grabs you from the beginning. slow sections add to it. very immersive and believable.

Trumbo (2015)

riveting viewing with a big message. can't praise it enough
23 July 2017
a great movie, one which thankfully was allowed to stand on the merits of the story without being sexed up. the excitement comes from the sublime acting and razor sharp script. but above all for 2 hours we we are allowed to rub shoulders with, and learn from a courageous, talented and immensely intelligent humanitarian. bravo.

i hope this work will be seen and absorbed by those of us who are prone to allowing hate and warped assumptions cloud their judgement and bury reason.

clever, feel good comedy

this off-beat movie is the opposite of predictable. i love the fact that the humour is subtle and over-acting does not live here. it's saying something that it has the spirit of groundhog day. i now have to keep typing to meet the draconian minimum review length of 5 lines. so like most people i probably wont bother in future.

Churchill (2017)

historically inaccurate - unfair portrayal of a great man

Warning: Spoilers
i was shocked by the negative portrayal of my hero. he was not the snivelling complainer about [... i will with-hold to avoid spoilers] as this movie makes him out to be. but perhaps i was wrong so i looked it up. The movie's account contradicts works by respected Churchill historian Martin Gilbert and Professor Andrew Roberts who writes "The major error of fact, of course, is that although Churchill did indeed oppose an over-hasty return of Allied forces to north-west France in 1942 and 1943, by the time of D-Day in 1944 he was completely committed to the operation.".

Super 8 (2011)

don't see how it won 8 Oscars
5 January 2014
As a family we enjoyed the movie, it was exciting in places. Younger ones especially enjoyed it. I don't see how it won 8 Oscars though, for me the story was too weak, and some pimply teenagers managing to achieve what they did (i can't say much or it would be a spoiler) didn't quite cut the mustard for me. An adult viewer looking for a satisfying movie rather than a few thrills and special effects should look elsewhere.

I am disappointed to find that IMDb won't accept this review without 10 lines. Surely that's a bad constraint for the following reasons. a) Most users Reviewers and readers don't have much time to spare. b) Some of the best reviews get to the point quickly and don't have unnecessary ballast. c) Due to the constraints, many current and future reviewers (including me) are gonna be put off from contributing their time in this way, other than perhaps professionals. extreme movie addicts, and people at home without a job. I ask you, what is wrong with a short review of one or two sentences.. no value?
