The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
Didn't think it was great but I understand why it's a cult classic
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is regarded as a cult classic movie. It was directed by Jim Sharman and it stars Tim Curry. The movie has many genres. First of all, you have to call it a musical because it is a platform that this movie relies on. Other than that, you can call it a comedy, drama, romance and some say even a horror movie. I think that has something to do with the fact that the word 'horror' is in the title of the movie. Of course, it has some horror-ish moments but I wouldn't call it a horror movie or even recommend this movie to hardcore horror fans. Although, I think that watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show was very interesting but I have some mixed feelings about it.
To begin with, I want to say that I have never seen a movie like this before. That is a plus for the movie because I understand how hard it is to achieve something original in film. Obviously, originality is not always a plus, but in The Rocky Horror Picture Show's case, it has definitely worked in movie's advantage. I believe that this is of the main reasons why this movie has such a cult following.
To be honest, I don't really like musicals. In my opinion, they are much more suited for theatre than film. However, this film is one of the examples which can argue against this statement. The Rocky Horror Picture Show has some great tracks which obviously makes the movie better. My favorite song was Don't Dream It, Be It which featured towards the end of the movie. I think it perfectly describes the message of the film.
One of the things I did not like was that there was too much music. I understand that this is a musical but one of my favorite scenes in the movie were the ones where the characters didn't sing. For example, the scenes where Dr. Frank is making love with Janet, and later with Brad were very hilarious. Maybe, it is just me but overlong singing scenes in movies often take me out of the film.
Anyway, you have to praise The Rocky Horror Picture Show for the things it shows. It is hard to imagine how the movie about transvestite was released in 1975. Even nowadays, you don't see these kinds of things in movies. It is really amazing how 40 years ago Jim Sharman managed to pull off the film like this.
All in all, as I said I have mixed feelings about the film. I am not the biggest fan of musicals but this one really deserves the appreciation it gets. It is not my kind of movie but I understand why people love it. I don't hate it either and I had a really interesting time with it. Probably, I won't be revisiting The Rocky Horror Picture Show any time soon but I am glad I have finally seen it because it has been in my watchlist for a very long time.
Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Great musical
Singin' in the Rain is considered one of the best movies of all time. Although, only two Oscar nominations prove that movie wasn't that highly appreciated when it came out in 1952. It was directed by Stanley Donley and Gene Kelly who is also the main star of the movie and it tells a story about a silent film transition to sound.
To be honest, despite being a huge movie lover, I am not really into musicals. During these types of movies I often lose focus because of overlong singing and dancing scenes which I believe are created for theatre, not for cinema. That's the reason why I've seen only handful of musicals. So when Singin' in the Rain started I didn't really have big expectations. Don't get me wrong, I knew that I'll be watching a classic movie, that's why I decided I'll give it a chance.
All I want to say is that I'm very happy now that I've seen this film. It has both interesting and educational story. As you would expect, the acting is great too. From the technical standpoint Singin' in the Rain is flawless, the use of color and long shots is very impressive. I was really surprised how funny this movie is, even almost all of the singing and dancing scenes are hilarious. I am really glad I've seen this great movie.
Gattaca (1997)
Science Fiction Classic. One of my favorite movies of all time
In my opinion, this is a very underrated movie, it's one of my favorite of all time. For example, if you go through the best movies of all time lists, you will rarely see Gattaca, although I think it's a spectacular movie.
Gattaca takes place in the near future where people have made such a medical advancement that they can make perfect genetically modified babies. It tells the story of the man named Vincent who has genetic disadvantage and is expected to live a short life. Society now doesn't treat people that have diseases the way that they treat genetically perfect ones. That prevents Vincent from his dream to travel to space. Throughout the movie you see how Vincent tries to achieve his dream no matter what it takes.
First of all, I want to say that the story of this movie is very interesting and touching. From the beginning of the movie you care about the character of Vincent. I wanted for Vincent to achieve his dream almost as desperately as him. Although I think the movie explores many themes, the main topic of the movie is how far can you go to achieve what you want. Even the tagline is There is no gene for human spirit".
Another undeniable plus that this movie has is the actors and characters. Characters are very well written and actors who played them were perfect. Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, Jude Law all did an amazing job. It was actually a breakthrough role for Jude Law and you can see why. He plays genetically perfect guy named Jerome Morrow who is paralyzed from the injury that he suffered. Vincent finds him and they make a deal which lets Vincent to take Jerome's identity. Jude Law's character is almost as interesting as Vincent. Jerome is a broken man who can't live a normal life because of his injury. Throughout the movie he and Vincent become like brothers to each other and it's very hard to watch when Vincent leaves him.
The soundtrack of the film is amazing as well. It suits the world of Gattaca perfectly. The Departure by Michael Nyman is the most powerful song from the soundtrack. Even without words, it describes the feeling of the movie wonderfully. Whenever I remember this film, I remember this soundtrack as well.
The main genre of Gattaca is science fiction. Although, you would not be mistaken if you would call it a drama. The movie has some crime elements as well. It's not a usual Sci-Fi film because it doesn't rely on special effects at all.
All in all, I think that Gattaca should be viewed as a classic. I think that if the movie like this would come out today, people would appreciate it much more. It has everything – from an amazing cast to wonderful cinematography and soundtrack. I think that despite being a Sci-Fi movie released in 1997, it holds up very well. Even now the futuristic world in the film is as interesting as it was 20 years ago. I've seen Gattaca countless times and in my opinion, everybody should see this movie.
Galaxy Quest (1999)
Not That Good
Galaxy Quest is a comedy sci-fi film directed by Dean Parisot. I have done my research and I realized that this movie is basically a satire on science fiction/fantasy movies like Star Trek. I am not too familiar with Star Trek franchise. Probably that is the reason why I did not find Galaxy Quest as entertaining as some of the people have. However, I did like parts of it and some of the jokes worked for me.
First of all, I want to give my view of some of the cast members and the characters. Tim Allen, who plays the main character of the movie was good enough but I have seen the same performances from him another 5 times at least and they are not that funny. Sigourney Weaver was decent and she looked nice. Although, this was not one of the main characters, for me Sam Rockwell's character Guy was the most entertaining one. The scenes in which he thinks that he will die because he is not the part of the Galaxy Quest team are hilarious. Sam Rockwell really shines in the movie despite the fact that he doesn't have too much screen time. On a side note, I want to say that for the movies like Moon, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and Seven Psychopaths, Sam Rockwell became one of my favorite actors working today.
The thing that I liked about Galaxy Quest was set design. The filmmakers of parodies usually do not take much time in making beautiful sets. However, this one was good to say the least. The scenes where the action takes place in other planet are beautiful. You can see that there was a lot effort put into those sets. I would not be surprised if the movie would have gotten Oscar nomination for it.
The main problem I have with Galaxy Quest is that a lot of the jokes fall flat for me. I want to repeat – FOR ME. Everybody has a different comedy taste. As I said, I might did not get some of the jokes because I did not understand the references but, for example, the joke of Sigourney Weaver's boops was used over and over again and it was not funny at all. Also, Alan Rickman always being rude and emotionless, was that supposed to be funny? Watch Tim Allen 8 years later in Wild Hogs, he gives the exact same performance.
All in all, Galaxy Quest was a huge disappointment for me. It had a few good scenes but that was not enough to make me feel good about watching this movie. I am a big science fiction fan but Galaxy Quest clearly was not made for me. Arguably, the year 1999 were one of the best in film's history and this movie would not be anywhere near my Top 10 of the year. I know, I sound very negative but I just don't understand how this movie contributed so much, that it is considered for the movie classes when there are so much more great science fiction films.
Gautas Iskvietimas (2016)
Very disappointing
Watching this movie was pretty dull experience. About 20 minutes in I was considering to turn it off but kept going because I was expecting something good. Did I get something good? Sadly, no. Most of the jokes fell flat, only small chunk of them had me smiling.
To be honest, it was very disappointing because the people working in front of the camera are considered pretty good here in Lithuania. Unfortunately, it couldn't help this film. It's basically like the episode of Cops. What's funny is that the episodes of Cops are more entertaining for me than this movie and I'm not even the fan of that show.
All in all, I can see someone enjoying this film watching it with their friends. That's not good enough though. I will surely skip the sequel which is coming out this month.
