The Woman in the Window (2021)
A dog's breakfast of several past films
During the film I thought I had been transported back in time in a fevered dream to rewatch a mix of old formulaic films dealing with (a) the shut-in person watching neighbors; (b) the confined-to-home person (for whatever reason); (c) the problematic-neighbor-family; (d) the strangely-behaving-loner. There is NOTHING new in this film, just a dash of this and a gob of that. Really expected more given the cast.
Nomadland (2020)
Should have been a (short) documentary
As more than one reviewer has suggested, with just a few nudges the film could have easily been made into a documentary. No real need for someone with McDormand's capabilities, just about anyone can stare into space for half the film. No real point to the film and minimal entertainment value. Don't waste your time with it.
The Dig (2021)
Seriously?
Not sure I could imagine a less interesting story to make into a movie. Pity that some fine acting, especially Fiennes, was wasted on this nonsense. Oh, and even the subplots, apart from also being boring, were disjointed.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
I just don't get it
Not at all clear to me why this has been so well received. The story centres around a largely unlikeable character and drags on and on with little being added from one episode to the next. The one-dimensional acting of the lead also does not help. Finally, the conclusion is so overly predictable as to make the experience of watching all seven episodes (is that all? - seems so much longer) a colossal waste of time. Really hope there is no further season.
Homeland (2011)
Really loved Homeland - apart from Brody's teenage daughter
Have recently viewed the entire series again and, again, mightily enjoyed it. However, it reminded me of the pain in watching the teenage daughter of Brody in the earlier episodes - I suppose mainly seasons 2 and 3. Fortunately in re watching the series I am now at least able to fast forward those - far too many - scenes with the daughter's constant, constipated expressions. I suppose this is small price to pay for what has been an exceptional TV product.
Little Fires Everywhere (2020)
Okaaaayish, apart from K Washington
Must agree with the many, many reviews commenting on Ms Washington's performance. The part really calls for more than a constant look of constipation. Also the role of Izzy was beyond annoying.
White Lines (2020)
Zero sympathy for any of the characters
It is a rare film or series where absolutely none of the characters appear sympathetic. In White Lines one struggles to care at all for any of the main protagonists. They all come across as superficial and annoyingly self-absorbed, especially and excruciatingly, the female lead, with hardy any redeeming qualities. I eventually gave up about two-thirds of the way through recognising precious minutes of my life were being lost.
Doctor Foster (2015)
Embarrassed to admit I watched the entire first season
Well, the premise seemed interesting and some of the acting (though not the two primary characters!) was passable, but that was the end. Totally and incredibly illogical plot and even more illogical behavior by the main protagonists. Dialogue often silly and disconnected plot lines. Rather chew on a tin foil ball than start season 2.
The Red Maple Leaf (2016)
Got through the entire movie believing it was a colossal comedic spoof
Honestly cannot recall a worse film. This is in terms of, firstly, the incredibly bad acting. Also can't leave out the total lack of suspense, unbelievable plot line and special effects (the fight(?) scene has to be seen to be believed). I think another reviewer likened it to a train wreck, from which one cannot turn away.
