The Last Bus (2021)
Great British film about ageing
This film is superbly written with some magnificent scenes and acting on various levels. It's a story about an old fella who lost the love of his life so in honour he takes her ashes to where they met, which is the other side of the U. K. He takes the journey by various bus links as he travel from town to town, where he encounters different types of people throughout the journey. This is where a lot of the magic in the writing is, as they manage to capture a real essence of Britain (hence the title of the review). The story is very different from the usual type of film, as it faces the ageing narrative head on, and as such is a mixed bag of emotions. I nearly gave only 9 stars because it was predictable, but then so are lots of award winning movies, of which this surely deserves at least one.
The Toll (2021)
Amazing dark comedy
Haven't watched something like this in year, simply hilarious. Obviously filmed on a limited budget, but more than a B Movie. The steady pace of the film (which reflects Wales quite well) is what sets it apart from other films, If you have a dark sense of humour and watch gangster movies your love it.
The Duke (2020)
Excellent funny drama
Witty brilliant working class drama. The best film I have watched so far this year.
Flint Town (2018)
This is as real as it gets
Excellent documentary, focuses on the various aspects of Flint Town Police department. I'm from the U. K. so grateful for the nuance arguments, rather than simple catch phrases.
How It Ends (2021)
A feel good film which dares to be different
This film probably wouldn't had been created if it wasn't for Covid. It's a quaint film, it contains the essence of a mix between a Woody Allen film and Waking Life. Without giving any spoilers away. The film is essentially about death, and the journey along the way, but cultivated in a feel good way. Those reviewers who stated they don't understand the point, probably don't understand life. Although, I gave it an extra two stars as I was stoned which made it more enjoyable.
Win the Wilderness: Alaska (2020)
Truly amazing program
I loved it. It contains a bit of everything, but most of all, humanity. Loved hearing the stories of yesterday years as well as seeing some amazing scenery. I'm looking forward to another program with the winners soon.
The House Next Door (2021)
It's a decent B movie.
Don't be expecting a Hollywood movie, it's a B movie. It's funny, lots of references to past music and movies. Worth watching probably while high.
Rogue Hostage (2021)
A Decent B Movie
I have watched many rubbish movies and this isn't too bad for a ZB movie. It's biggest let down is the music and cinematography. A Sunday afternoon film.
Lazarus (2021)
Low budget
As a B movie it's 8/10. It could have been much better, feeling like a movie made in the 90s. The premise drew me in, the storyline is ok, but the casting and set is below par for an A movie.
Trailer Park Boys (2001)
In my top five comedies of all time....
Not often that I complete a TV review, but Trailer Park Boys deserves it. My initial impressions was that it was a cheap budget program from Canada, which was largely insulting. Nevertheless, it did not take long before I realised that this program is ingenious. The dynamics between the scripting, acting and filming is what makes it so funny.
It is set as a documentary style drama, largely based around a group of friends and family at the Trailer Park. The main characters which the 'documentary team' follow are Ricky and Julian, both small time criminals. In addition to their best mate Bubbles, who is such an amazing actor, and Mr Lanhey and Randy the supervisors for the park, who no one likes, not even the Police.
The scripts are well written, cheesy and largely full of one-liners. The actors constantly improvise and stay in act throughout the entire program and the production is very cheap. But it is this, and the dynamics of the characters which makes the program so hilarious.
Finally I think it is best to warn you all that this program may be offensive as it contains adult situations and strong language (every few seconds!). Also, it is much better than a typical comedy like 'friends' and more than likely you will cry or hurt from the laughter.
For me Trailer Park Boys goes into my top five comedies ever made.
Suing the Devil (2011)
The worse movie of my lifetime
Popcorn, drinks and dog was on the sofa ready for what i originally believed to be a great premise for a film. Has a fan of indie, student and B movies, i rarely cut a film off midway. However 30 minutes in and i really wanted to switch this film off, but with the remote control out of reach and the dog lieing over me, i couldn't get to the TV. In any case, i thought i should give this film more of a chance. Ninety minutes in and i couldn't take the pain anymore, my mind wondered away at the torture techniques used to gain an confession by an enemy, maybe watching this movie was one of these techniques!
The guy who plays Satin and the Judge can act to some degree and are believable (ish) (5/10). However, the rest of the actors are dreadful, and not the funny dreadful, but the dreadful, awful type. The script, sound quality and videoing editing is all over the place, and i started to wonder whether the person who produced the film, actually watches films themselves. I cant remember the last time i switched a film off before the end, and I only regret that I should of switched this off earlier.
My advice is to stay away from this film unless your a fundamentalist Christian. If you are, you may enjoy the some of the debate. Nevertheless, intellectually it is dumb, and does not offer anything in terms of mental or intelligent debate. I only gave it one star, for the effort.
