Manchester by the Sea (2016)
Real Life Movie
I really enjoyed this movie, there is a reality to this movie which is played out with incredible performances from Affleck and Williams who's connection is so deep and so unfinished its heartbreaking. The character "Patrick" is very natural and convincing the actor certainly deserves recognition for his part in this beautiful, sad and totally believable story of real people with real feelings. Still there are two problems I have one is with the profanity, having lived in the US, I never came across people who used the f.ck word so much, it is not how most Americans talk and certainly in the area where the film was located, I think the people from Boston might be offended. Secondly PLEASE STOP FILMING while someone is driving, the number of times the "Lee" character had his eyes off the road was incredulous.....most people would have crashed and died by then. Otherwise...This is a great movie
The Lady Vanishes (2013)
Spot on
I'm writing this review because I really enjoyed this remake of "The Lady Vanishes" When I looked it up on IMB it had a low rating and not very kind reviews, after watching it i wanted to let others know Its very good. British TV at its best with an excellent performance from Tuppence Middleton as the socialite Ms Carr and the wonderful Tom Hughes. The Vicar and his wife were also very convincing and very real performers. This is my favorite period in history, just before the war, the clothes are wonderful with the young people rich and glamorous seemingly having it all with there frivolous fun filled holiday in Italy, with the other hotel members frowning on there loose morals, Ms Carr the rudest of them. This is all very well set up as the train journey begins the story twists and turns with everyone playing there part so well as the suspense is building. Its a top notch remake of a great story with the best ending! Very well done by all the actors involved.
Great Expectations (2011)
Expectations !
Despite reading a review that did not give me much hope I went ahead and watched it for the SECOND time. Okay its been reworked a bit and not quite true to the story but the performance is young and very fresh. I particularly enjoyed Gillian Anderson as Miss Haversham what was great was one minute she looked haggard then the next shot in the same scene had her looking stunning.Very effective. The Pip character was just the right amount of smouldering, young sexiness needed, look forward to seeing more of Mr Booth, Estella was so cold and so good, her soon to be husband was a super baddie. Great to see Mr Suchet playing the Lawyer,Orlick was excellent too.Ray Winstone was an added bonus and brought some real originality to this great Dickens story. Loved it, even better the second time around.
Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
Slow Burn Fast Release
This movie took some time to get going and I ended up watching it alone, glad i stuck with it because it was a slow starter but once you get into the story and realise about Barry and his sisters constantly nagging him, like having six mothers but there all to busy to hear his answers. When we meet his family you suddenly get a clearer picture. The Barry character is very determined in his own way and this made me stick with the movie, His obsessions with buy something to get free things, I loved the way he fell in love, how it gave him so much strength he became super human. The story is funny and sad but what a story. Adam Sandler plays this part so well, I liked his deadpan work mate (Luz Guzman) Philip Seymour Hoffman was great too....Loved it.
Dancing on the Edge (2013)
Anything is possible
Well as they often say in this drama that anything is possible...I have watched one part so far and loved every moment of it, the costumes, jewels, pomp and ceremony, snotty old stuffy people at the hotel...the Musical Express go getter editor. Watching all the characters are a joy to see unfold in this very enjoyable period story about a Jazz Band and the people that they get involved with. There is an underlying story of something strange that is going on, murky perhaps, which is keeping the suspense up. The strict civil servant working in the immigration department in the 30's and the problems with foreign people, it was all so different in this time and Dancing on the Edge really captures the moment, Thoroughly enjoyed it so far and looking forward to watching more. Please read all the reviews because everyone has an opinion and thank goodness I ignored the first review and watched it.
American Hustle (2013)
Perm Curlers and Chapstick !!!
Hooked from the very first frame of a man doing his hair in the bathroom, we get to see something very intimate, yet its laughable and sad and for me summons up the con man, hiding behind things, covering up the truth. The women in this movie are given such strong parts they almost overshadow the male dominated seventies but the wife and the mistress are so sassy, stunning performance from Adams and Lawrence. The Richard character was totally believable with his ego driven eccentric drive to be someone, then we see his mother and his real life, so well done. There were so many things, I think I just have to go see it again, when I was in the pharmacy yesterday the girl was applying some chapstick to her lips and I just started laughing as I remembered the couple who were having dinner, she is insisting he uses her chapstick, for this one liner alone its its a BRILLIANT movie. Unique in taking a good hard look at the cheesiness of the 70's right down to perm curlers..Ten out of Ten..GO SEE
Dead Boss (2012)
Just simply AWFUL
Tuned in to watch "Dead Boss" How this situation of someone being wrongly accused of a crime can possibly be funny is simply not funny. Its a real shame that really good talent has wasted time and energy making this TV series. There are some great writers and stories out there just needing the BBC to turn them into AWARD winning Drama, Comedy....how can the BBC waste good talent on A series that has chosen a really sad situation which I am sure has happened to people in the past (Jill Dando's killer was jailed and was proved innocent) It is something so AWFUL...Evil threatening characters that the Helen character has to bluff her way out of, come on its beyond stupid, its mindless, thoughtless rubbish and the BBC can and should do better.
Broken (2012)
British Cinema at its best !
British Cinema at its best. What a great movie, with this original story, I was almost back in my childhood village. It is very easy to watch and to be drawn in by the simplistic easy going style of the director,But this story is moving tender and very realistic. Tim Roth is so excellent in this and the girl playing his daughter in the film a character Spunk is awesome and beautiful(really)along with the younger Oswald sibling. Brilliant. The acting from the girls blew me away ! So good. It kept me interested and wanting more. All the characters are played Oswald,Rick and Rick's parents everyone is placed so well, alongside remarkable direction and brilliant cinematography. AWARD winning movie. Please support this great British project. Please go and see some wonderful talented actors and actresses at there best.
