Weird, annoying and beautiful
18 November 2011
I saw this on the Stockholm film festival, and I am still confused about my opinion. It kinda reminded me about Wes Anderssons movies with a weird mix of David Lynch imagery. Sean Penn is a genius actor (and director). I would describe him as cinematic chameleon. Like Johnny Depp he can transform himself into any kind of character (I am Sam, Milk, Carlitos Way) and make it believable. It was hard to watch his weird retired (retarded?)glamrocker in this movie. He was just moving around through the film as some kind of apatic observer, speaking like a autistic person.Even worse than Ozzy Osbourne. So why was he like that? This was a bit frustrating. The whole movie has weird and quirky with fun strange scenes without real meaning (including pingpong, a goose etc).

The story of him going after his fathers Auschwitz torturer was also a bit "oh...we need a storyline too...hmm". However I really loved the photo and the scenery in this road movie. Though I was REALLY annoyed about David Byrnes pointless part (as him self) of the movie (I believe he is the producer). Why was he doing a live show in the movie, and why did Chayenne praise Davis Byrne as an artist,Talking Heads, blablabla... It was a stupid form of product placement!!

Nice little ghost shocker
15 November 2011
I just saw it on Stockholm Filmfestival and was happily surprised and scared. I had no expectations but this was quite a nice ghost shocker. Mix Paranormal Activity, Rec, The Others and Shining with some humour and maybe you get the picture. Nice to see 80s star Kelly McGillis as a medium, still looking good 25 years after Top Gun. The footage was pretty lame and homemade "in a bad way". It was the same ugly digital camera technique as David Lynchs "INland Empire" and it looks quite horrible. The main characters had some dark humour and were pretty likable, especially the lazy and bitter guy Luke. The pace was slow took its time and had a fine climb to the climax without being boring.

Earthling (2010)
Complex and compelling
11 November 2011
This is a very ambitious and complex sci-fi drama with a low budget. It has some similarities to "Another Earth", but this plot is much more complicated. Imagine a mix of dreamy Sopphia Coppola-scenes and some David Cronenberg-creatures, then add some "Solaris". The slow pace and feeling of the film is very beautiful and hypnotic, like Another Earth. The acting in Earthling is really good, especially the main character, and the plot is very implicit witch kept me interested throughout the whole movie. For instance, no one ever mentions the word "alien" or "planet", you have to keep guessing. This is the typical "Filmfestival-sci-fi-drama".

Mr. Nobody (2009)
9/10
Unforgettable
9 September 2010
This is the kind of film you don't see too often. It is truly a visual masterpiece. I haven't heard about this french director, but "Mr Nobody" really blew my mind in all its images, dreams, romance and complexity. The movie has similarities to films by Michel Gondry but i think this film was more magical. Dreamlike and existential films. Some might think Mr Nobody is too complex, too demanding. It is not for everyone, but I loved it. Like other surreal movies, Peter Jacksons "The Lovely Bones", and "Synechdohe: New York" "Dr. Parnassus", "Micmacs"- these dreamlike and "difficult" films must be terribly expensive to produce and I ask myself how can the companies go through with these productions? These flicks never generate big box office money. Im amazed that they still make this kinds of demanding visual movies for cinema. And glad.

I discovered the greatness of Jared Leto as an actor when he played John Lennons Killer in Chapter 23. That was a truly disturbing and amazing acting of a disturbed fanatic loner. Mr Nobody is however the role of his life! If you like this kinds of movies I recommend "Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind", "Synechdohe: New York" and "THE FOUNTAIN". They really make you think!
