I saw this on the Stockholm film festival, and I am still confused about my opinion. It kinda reminded me about Wes Anderssons movies with a weird mix of David Lynch imagery. Sean Penn is a genius actor (and director). I would describe him as cinematic chameleon. Like Johnny Depp he can transform himself into any kind of character (I am Sam, Milk, Carlitos Way) and make it believable. It was hard to watch his weird retired (retarded?)glamrocker in this movie. He was just moving around through the film as some kind of apatic observer, speaking like a autistic person.Even worse than Ozzy Osbourne. So why was he like that? This was a bit frustrating. The whole movie has weird and quirky with fun strange scenes without real meaning (including pingpong, a goose etc).
The story of him going after his fathers Auschwitz torturer was also a bit "oh...we need a storyline too...hmm". However I really loved the photo and the scenery in this road movie. Though I was REALLY annoyed about David Byrnes pointless part (as him self) of the movie (I believe he is the producer). Why was he doing a live show in the movie, and why did Chayenne praise Davis Byrne as an artist,Talking Heads, blablabla... It was a stupid form of product placement!!
