Shark Waters (2022)
It's Terrible, but Enjoyable if You're in the Right Mood
The other reviewers are correct, it's bad. But for people, like me, who enjoy certain kinds of bad movies, it's a gold mine.
After the first shark attack scene, it goes on tediously for a bit, and I almost gave up on it. There is a lot of pointless dialogue, over explaining of things, etc... but if you can stay with it, it's got a lot of laugh out loud moments.
There is a non-sensical plot, TERRIBLE acting, writing and dialogue, laughable accents, baffling and unrealistic actions, attempts at touching & sentimental scenes for characters the audience cares nothing about, amateurish CGI, etc...
It's a real hoot if you're in to the that sort of thing. If you're wanting an actual "good" shark attack film, you should definitely avoid though.
M3GAN (2022)
Recycled? Sure. But, still campy, clever and fun
I'll not summarize the plot here. Just leaving a few words to express my appreciation and surprise at how fun M3GAN is.
I wasn't expecting much based on the trailers and I'm not a real fan of "killer doll" horror. But, this one delivers.
Much like the original Child's Play, this film doesn't take itself too seriously, parodies the genre and consumerism, while simultaneously bringing some shock along with the laughs.
M3GAN doesn't rely on gore for effect either; the violence is mostly implied and not on-screen for the most part (which, for me, is preferred).
The movie isn't at all unpredictable, doesn't delve in to the science of how, doesn't spend a whole lot time with ethical dilemmas of AI, realistic applications etc...
So, serious sci-fi and horror/gore fans may not care for this film. But, if you go in with the right mindset, you're in for a fun cinematic diversion. And, don't be surprised if M3GAN is a popular Halloween costume next year.
Mindhorn (2016)
Sort of a British Zucker Brothers-Type Thing
Major Bullet Points:
*It's British. So there's that
*You don't necessarily need to love "British" comedy(but it may help)
*I wondered if I could stay with it after the first few minutes. Just wasn't sure what I was getting in to
*There are a couple of characters that are just a little too silly and over the top
*Easy watch. Clocks in at a little over an hour (which probably prevents some things to not grow tiresome. But, a little more time could have assisted with some character/story development)
*It almost seems like it was a possible pilot episode
The plot/storyline has already been discussed. So, I'll just give my opinion of why should (or maybe should not watch)
It is a very endearing movie that will have you laughing out loud (if you're in to Police Squad!/Naked Gun-type humor)
For what it is, just about everything in this movie works. The acting is top notch. The jokes are just as outrageous as they are funny.
The friends and I that enjoyed this movie love the type of humor you will find in Flight of the Conchords, The Office, Heat Vision and Jack, The Simpsons (first decade), Seinfeld, Arrested Development, The Last Man on Earth, MST3K, Top Secret & Police Squad!
If that type of silly humor isn't your thing, you might want to swipe left!
The Voices (2014)
The Ending was a Total Let Down to a Very Entertaining Film
This is a difficult movie to either recommend, or totally pan. I gave it a chance on Hulu, and even though I'm not sure how to feel about it overall, it has stayed with me because of all its great moments.
First of all, it's not for everyone. It is not a big budget blockbuster, and has a very unique, Indie, treatment in all respects. The Voices is very politically incorrect, and some may just not think the treatment of mental illness is funny at all. But, if you like quirky, different stories, and have an actual sense of humor, even for very ghastly subject matter, you'll love it...maybe you'll feel ripped off by the ending though.
To me, it sorta had a low-budget production approach to "American Psycho" in a lower-middle class setting. Some aspects of The Voices gave me pause to reflect on some actual serial killers, Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy come to mind, and how they operated for years, right under many people's noses just because they were attractive, and/or just so unassuming. The lead character is just likable. Everything around him seems so peachy, lovely to the absurd, or is it really?
The Voices has some very grim, dark, truly twisted moments. However, it does a very clever job at making you smile and even laugh out loud at the very next turn.
While most of the movie left me more entertained than I've been in some time, the ending was a huge, baffling disappointment: it just seemed like they ran out of patience and said "let's just end this thing a la a Simpson's Halloween skit".
Other's may think the ending was just as entertaining as the rest of the film...maybe if you just reeeally like Ryan Reynolds or other the characters, you'll be down with it. But, I think most reasonable people will just be like "well, hmm...OK then, I guess"
I'd give it 7 stars for being a refreshingly unique, crazy, darkly comic Indie delight through most of its run...2 stars for the junk ending.
Holiday Heart (2000)
If you're a fan of hilariously bad movies, SEE THIS!
I happened upon this movie recently while my girlfriend was watching BET. She remembered the movie from her childhood and wanted to give it another viewing for the sake of nostalgia.
I was immediately stunned to see Ving Rhames saucing around in drag. Oh my. I actually thought it was an offbeat comedy of sorts. Apparently, it's not, and that's what totally captivated me.
Every scene is played for sheer drama, and just about every scene had me howling with laughter. I've recommended this to many of my friends who are big fans of MST3K and unintentionally funny movies, in general, and every single one of them has been blown away. It's pure gold.
The movie has a very low-budget, Hallmark or Lifetime Network look and feel. I believe it was probably made for a cable network though because it does have a little bit of strong language. It has some top-shelf talent on-board as well: Ving Rhames, Alfre Woodard, and Mykelti Williamson (doesn't ring a bell? Think "shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich")! The young girl, Jesika Reynolds, is beyond cute, and a serviceable enough actress, but just not really charismatic and plays her cues virtually flat. Mykelti actually does a fine job with what he had to work with, but Ving and Alfre and a few other cast members totally make up for it though, just chewing the scenery like Tasmanian Devils at each new scene.
The story is meant to be a very serious drama, and is a very sad tale of drug abuse, physical abuse, parental neglect and even worse. It's just portrayed such a corny, melodramatic and overacted way that I honestly can't see how anyone could take it seriously. I mean, it's got a lot of heart. Just no brains.
I guess tons of copies of this movie aren't around, because DVD copies out there consistently go for around $20+ on Amazon and eBay, but I kept a sharp eye out and finally grabbed one dirt cheap on ebay. The full movie can also be found on YouTube, if you don't mind watching it via the internet.
Some bad movies are just bad and not watchable. This one consistently entertaining at almost every second of its running time. I think about 1.5 or 2.5 stars out of 10 for it's intended purpose. I'd give about 10 Ed Wood flying saucers out 10 for it's unintentional entertainment value.
Now You See Me (2013)
So much potential. Then, ZOINKS! Scooby Doo ending!
Great cast, great effects, and at first, an intriguing premise. That's about it. And, unfortunately, that's probably enough to rope most viewers in to thinking it was a great film.
Now You See Me is really nothing more than the plot of a Scooby Doo episode, and I say that without much exaggeration; it's that bad and that unapologetic in how it half-ass sets it up and throws together a conclusion.
There are plot holes big enough to drive an armored car through just everywhere. Inexplicable and illogical doesn't even begin to scratch the surface.
I have to admit that I was pulled in for awhile. But around the midway point, I was beginning to wonder how they were going to tie everything together and make it work. The more I think about it now, it almost makes me angry I spend nearly 20 bucks for this tripe. I might have felt a little better if the arrogant Jesse Eisenberg character had received the punishment he deserved.
The "twist" ending should totally insult your intelligence (unless discovering Mr. Withers was the phantom of the haunted amusement park totally still blows your mind).
Unless you're 13, or have the the mentality of someone that age, do not waste your money at the theater.
42 (2013)
Harrison Ford is Burgess Meredith as The Penguin
It's a biopic, so unless you have never heard of Jackie Robinson, there isn't going to be anything earth shattering here.
It's pretty formulaic, tries WAY to hard to pull emotional heartstrings (I swear there is a dramatic horn swell every 45 seconds).
You really don't get to know any of the characters, especially Jackie. Nothing about him is really revealed, except for the interplay between him and his wife, which seemed so syrupy it made my teeth hurt.
Actually, most of the characters are very aloof except for the ones that just beat you over the head with there motivations.
The movie is LONG: well over 2 hours. This mess wasn't really a strikeout, more of a walk.
Mustang! (1959)
Unintentionally hilarious. A must-see for bad film buffs
Hard to rate this film as it's horrible, in a good way. If you're in to z-grade films that are good for laughs, this should work for you. If you're wanting to watch a vintage western in the traditional sense, stay away.
Namely: *None of the characters are remotely likable. *The acting is atrocious and completely wooden. *The script/storyline is juvenile and contains many "WTF?" moments. *The dialogue is completely laughable. *The editing seems to have been done by a drunken chimp. *The film stock looks like someone's old home movies.
First of all, the lead character is anti-charismatic, and is basically a psychopath. He horns his way in to the lives of some equally unlikable ranchfolk and mayhem and hilarity ensue. (You may recognize the "hero", Jack Beutel, from the almost as miserable "The Outlaw").
There are many laugh out loud moments: one in which the lead, Gabe Lee, observes a moose and states "that moose reminded me of my boyhood days in Oklahoma"!!! Wow! In another scene he remarks: "an old raccoon wanted no part of it"... in reference to a possum!!
There are many reused loops of scenes of horses running, scenery and one particularly funny one in which the heroine rides too close to a cedar tree and a limb nearly knocks her off of her horse. Another great clip shows the hero roping the wild mustang, while closeups show the horse magically wearing a rope halter.
There are many edits featuring scenes from other locations, backgrounds and film stock pasted in. There are a couple of great ones in which an obvious stuntMAN stands in for the female lead (although she is very mannish in her own right). And, vocal overdubbing seems to have been done by other actors at times.
It's hard to believe that writer director, Tom Gries, went on to actually make some good films (particularly Will Penny, which features his son Jon "Uncle Rico" from Napoleon Dynamite in his first role).
I'm a big fan of bad movies. I own every episode of MST3K and have an extensive collection of 50s and 60s sci-fi schlock. This movie rates right up with Plan 9 from Outer Space for it's sheer earnest ineptness and unintentional comic value.
I give it a "3" for it's original intention. However, it rates a solid "9" for it's enjoyability as a laugh-out-loud turkey.
