The Facts of Life: Small But Dangerous (1983)
Season 5, Episode 9

Not a funny episode, and now we're stuck with Kelly.
14 December 2021
This season (season 5) has been great so far. I loved every episode so far, but this episode was really bad. I hardly laughed, and this Kelly character is so annoying. Not sure why they think it's a good idea to add her to the already perfect cast.

A lesbian film for straight men and lesbians under 25
7 September 2021
Maybe I'm getting old. I don't know how old everyone who wrote all the glowing reviews here was, but I'm a 38 year old woman and.even though I realized one of the main actresses is actually only a couple of years younger than me, when the movie was made both of them looked very, very young. The actress who played Adele looked way too young, her face was very child-like, like 15 or 16 in this movie. Watching these two very, very young looking actresses engage in very long, very explicit sex scenes was uncomfortable and felt very wrong to me, almost like watching a child engage in sexual acts with another child, it felt so violating even to me as a viewer. Two hours was all I could take, I did not finish the movie. I would think the reason this movie was rated so highly is because it appeals to the straight male demographic and the under 25 lesbians and gays. As for the rest of us lesbians over the age of 25, we know better. This is why I rarely want to watch lesbian movies, because they are usually made in the perspective of straight men for mainly straight men. The 3 star rating is only for the actress who played Emma, who I think was very natural, and very believable as a lesbian (even though she's not one in real life). I wouldn't recommend this movie to older lesbian/gay demographic.

One of the least convincing romance I've seen on screen
4 September 2021
I had high expectations for this movie. With the high rating and glowing reviews, and some people dubbing it as "the greatest lesbian romantic movie", I was expecting to see something really good. Man, was I let down. Rooney Mara can't act to save her life. I've seen her in other movies before and she was always this stiff. Not sure how she can even have a career in acting. She always had the same facial expression, the same delivery for every line, she reminds me of Zooey Deschanel who also always had the same facial expression and the same line delivery in all her movies. Cate Blanchett was okay but she seemed to be too absorbed in making her character look and sound "50s classy". I don't know what the director was aiming for here but it's clear that character development and story were the least of his concern. The director was probably too focused on making a "pretty" film or a film that wins awards rather than a film that the viewers can relate to on a personal level. No character development, no buildup, no soul, dull, very unconvincing romance.

Don't feel bad if you don't "get" the movie, there's nothing much to get anyway.
30 August 2021
About 10-20 minutes in, I thought, why have I never heard of this movie before? If it's this good and well acted, some people might still be talking about it in 2021, right? I kept watching and kept asking the same thing almost throughout the movie. And then I finished the movie. And then I understood why this movie was never really talked about. I personally enjoyed the movie from start to finish. As a thriller, it managed to keep me curious throughout the movie. But once it's finished and you take a bit of time to yourself to sort out what you have just watched and mental strip everything that isn't really necessary, the magic is pretty much gone and you're left with this sad story about a girl and her love affair. To think about it, I probably prefer the drama aspect of this movie better than the "mystery" part of it. The drama part is the part that stays with me. Naomi Watts was brilliant in this, as she always was. Everything else to me was just routine psycho-thriller sequence to make a thriller a thriller.

An episode ruined
2 April 2021
Lame, cliche speech by Amy and Jonah. Lame attempt at pulling on your heartstrings. Nope, didn't work for me. And why did they decide to bring back America Ferrera? I was happy that she left the show, but then she's back again and the episode is ruined, just like that. Jonah is tolerable without Amy, but together on screen, they become so hard to watch. Go ahead and thumb down my review because you don't like an opinion different than yours.

Reality Meets Fantasy
31 October 2020
I would have to say I loved Tangerine a lot more than The Florida Project. Both have the same vibe. They're not for everyone. If you're looking for a plot, or a conflict to be solved, Sean Baker movies might not be for you. The Florida Project doesn't rely on plot. There's no actual story to tell. It's a portrayal of a world often overlooked. A world that is bleak and grim, always looked down upon, sidelined, as if it doesn't exist. It's a stark contrast to the backdrop of the movie where it takes place; the sunshine state of Florida, and the colorful magical world of Disney.

One reviewer here on IMDb said it's hard for them to sympathize with any of the characters despite the director trying very hard to make them feel so. I don't think that's what the director or this movie sets out to do at all. It's not trying to make the viewers sympathize with any of the characters. If you sympathize with the characters, great. If you despise the characters, great. If you don't feel anything for the characters, great. What you feel about the characters is entirely up to you.

The movie is like an acted out documentary. A fictitious documentary. It doesn't take sides or try to shove a "message" in your face. It wants you to see this world that some of us rarely think about. It's not what most people of Florida would talk about when asked about their state. It's not what tourists from around the globe would think of when they think of visiting Florida. But it is there, it's part of what Florida is. The scene with the Brazilian tourist symbolized this. The Brazilian tourist seemed to be surprised and upset that the motel she arrived in looked nothing like what she pictured in her Disney fantasies. It's funny because the building doesn't look rundown or ghetto, but it just doesn't match her expectation of the Florida she thinks she's visiting. This might as well be called "The America Project". It's what America is on the surface, versus what America really is.

I think this is the reason realism is very important in Sean Baker movies. He wants to portray these overlooked worlds as realistic as possible, as close to reality as possible. I think it's very courageous and I applaud him for doing it. A very fine film making here. And that ending, I couldn't think of a better ending than that. Again, remember, the ending is not about the characters or what's going to happen to the characters. The movie is never about that.

A lot of heart and soul, but male demographic might find it boring.
31 March 2020
I think I understand why some people said this movie is boring. I'm just gonna go ahead and assume the majority of people who said this are from the male demographic, and there's nothing wrong with that. This is how I see it: male demographic will expect a movie that involves actions, lots of jokes, unpredictable plot, and maybe a little bit of heart. What this movie is, though, is this: a lot of heart and soul, some actions, a little bit of jokes, and a very good execution of predictable scenes and plot.

So if you go in expecting it to have the Toy Story or Finding Nemo vibe, you might be disappointed. To me, this movie has the Inside Out vibe, except that Inside Out is a lot more original. I might sound negative so far, but I actually really enjoyed the movie. There's nothing much to say about the plot because like others have pointed out, it's everything you would expect when you watch the trailer, it's your usual race against time family theme. But to me what makes the movie a winner is the execution. It's nothing you've never seen before, but it's done Pixar style. And Pixar is famous for pulling at your heart strings, and they successfully did that with this movie. Yes, you saw it coming but when the scenes unfolded and dialogues were delivered, they were delivered well, and you still teared up. In my case, I cried like a baby.

Keeps getting better each season, each new episode.
4 March 2020
It's weird that one reviewer here on IMDb mentioned that this show is the best thing on TV since the X-Files, because, I kid you not, that's exactly what came to my mind when the new season of BCS started. I've never felt so excited about a TV show like this since the X-Files. Yes, I know, you might argue that there are a lot of good shows out there blah blah, but I'm talking about me. I did watch some shows throughout the years, but nothing got me this excited. The show just keeps getting better each season, each new episode. This is the best episode of the season so far.

Why do some people want everything to be "explained" to them all the time?
16 January 2020
How have human beings become this dumb? Seems like in this day and age, you can't make movies that don't show and explain everything anymore. People don't even trust their own imaginations/assumptions, or people just don't have imaginations anymore. One reviewer said "If I wanted to imagine my own ending I'd just imagine the entire story!" except that he can't. You can't even use your brain to imagine an ending to a ridiculously simple movie, how can you imagine the entire story? Now, the movie itself, to me, was nothing to write home about. It's a post-apocalypse movie, post-apocalypse movies are like zombie movies, they are not to be taken seriously. They usually don't have sensible plot, they exist just for the sole purpose of entertainment (other than to make money of course), not awards season, and one viewing is enough. Just ignore the hype around this movie. Don't expect anything groundbreaking or original. Yes, some characters did do stupid things like characters in post-apocalypse/zombie/horror movies always do, but it's tolerable. If you can sit back and enjoy it for what it is, you might as well be entertained. I think if you watch it with this mindset you won't be disappointed UNLESS you are the type who want everything to be shown and explained to you all the time. In that case, no, you won't get an answer to where the young couple who ran away with the car ended up in, or whether they made it alive or not.

Typical 90s/early 2000s crime movie, nothing spectacular.
15 January 2020
The plot twist was your typical 90s crime movie twist. You can literally see it from miles away. Nothing special or spectacular. Usual cheesy 90s background music and dialogues. Morgan Freeman was the only reason I bothered to watch this at all.

Frozen II (2019)
6/10
Elsa's journey of becoming Rapunzel
25 November 2019
I waited so eagerly for this movie ever since the first teaser trailer came out. I watched all the trailers and played all the song snippets like every day because I couldn't wait for this movie to come out. The trailers promised me so much more than what I have just watched today. The trailers made it look like it was going to be a whole lot better than the first movie. I was let down. No, Frozen II did not surpass the original, contrary to what some other reviewers might want you to believe. The original movie was far more superior than the sequel in so many ways.

Frozen II reminded me of Ralph Breaks The Internet. It tried too hard to surpass its predecessor and came up short. The story was all over the place, too many things that led to nothing, stories didn't connect very well together, plot holes left and right, the solution too simplistic and predictable, nothing original or groundbreaking here unlike the first movie.

Having said that, it's still worth watching for Frozen fans. All the songs were good, I would say melodically they were better than the songs from the first movie. Elsa was prettier than ever, I felt like the visuals were better in general too. Olaf was still funny (or annoying, depending on how you see it). But Elsa without braid? That's one thing I'd like to complain about Elsa. Elsa without braid is like the world without air. I can't believe they took away her pretty braid and made her look like Rapunzel! Not cool, Disney.

I know I might be a little too harsh rating this 6/10 (I originally rated this 5/10) but that's how I felt about the weak story line and that ending. But this won't deter me from going to see Frozen III if they ever decide to make one. Yes, take my money, Disney, as long as you give Elsa her braid back.

Toy Story 4 (2019)

I did not recognize THIS Buzz Lightyear at all!
18 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Toy Story 1,2, and 3 were great, probably better than great, they were all connected and solid. They had all the Pixar signatures in them: great animations, good character development, original script, character realism, animation realism, funny, and all around fun. But this.... this feels like a different movie than the other Toy Story franchise. I did not recognize the Buzz Lightyear in this movie AT ALL. Who is this Buzz? Buzz used to be very confident, he was second in command after Woody. Sure he was a delusional "space ranger" when Andy first got him, but after all of that confusion was over, he became confident and calm. In Toy Story 4 he suddenly became as dumb as a rock. I thought that was Rex's personality? Maybe they got the characters mixed up, heaven knows. Even Rex now seems smarter than Buzz.

And at times this feels more like a Disney movie rather than a Pixar movie. The animations of human characters in Toy Story 4 looked like animations of human characters in Frozen, they lacked realism at times. For example, when Bonnie woke up one morning, she did not act like how a child (or any human being) would act waking up and her hair clip was still nicely clipping her hair. Pixar used to care about all little details like this in all their previous films, which made them so great. So this is more like one step down for a Pixar film.

And the story..... while I do feel that the premise is promising (Woody finding greater meaning of being a toy), the craft of the story is pretty weak. However, having said that, the ending was still pretty satisfying. Maybe that was the only thing that actually saved the movie. Though I would prefer a better exchange between Woody and Buzz at the end, I mean, they were best friends for a long time and they were not going to see each other ever again, I expected an exchange that would satisfy long time Toy Story fans, something to be remembered for a long time.

Not this again......
9 July 2019
Obviously the 9/10 and 10/10 reviews were written by Miley Cyrus' fans, who probably never watched Black Mirror before. I think the series is past its prime now. They need to hire new writers. The writing is getting worse and worse each season. Charlie Brooker just couldn't come up with anything new anymore.

Black Mirror: Smithereens (2019)
Season 5, Episode 2
5/10
Nobody's going to mention the acting and the password thing? Cringey.
9 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I have mixed feeling about this episode. It started good, the actor who played Chris, the unstable gunman, was really really good. In fact, all the British actors were good. But the momentum was killed by the comical "FBI" and the handling of the situation by the staff at Smithereens' U.S office. The guy who played Billy was so cringey it's as if this was his first acting job ever. His dialogues at the supposedly crucial moment were simply cringe worthy, or maybe it's his acting, the way he clenched his fist I suppose to convey his emotions? Cringey.

When Billy said "In times like this, I can impose God mode" and went on hitting some buttons, and then some bunch of codes seemed to display on screen? Cringey.

And, what corporation would tell a next of kin of a deceased user's password over the phone?? They could've sent a code to her phone to reset the password or something. Passing information like that over the phone is illogical, and the next illogical thing is the staff actually KNOW their users' password ha! Cringey.

If not for these cringey things listed above, I'd probably rate this episode much higher.

Black Mirror: Striking Vipers (2019)
Season 5, Episode 1

Highly predictable episode, nothing new.
7 July 2019
After a while, you can guess what's going to happen in each new episode of Black Mirror. The story might change a little bit (not much), but the technology stays the same. They might change the look of the tech devices here and there, but in general the concept stays the same in many episodes, it no longer surprises you. The so-called "dark effects" of the technology also follow the same pattern, nothing new, nothing surprising anymore. Maybe they shouldn't renew the show for new seasons, or bring it back after a 3-year break or something. Have a break, and then come back after 3-5 years and come back strong. Well, you can only hope.

I Am Mother (2019)

A simple but interesting plot that surprisingly not understood by many viewers
30 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I seldomly liked Netflix movies, they're usually below par so to say, so I didn't have high expectations for this one. But surprisingly, this one happened to be really good, I really liked the movie. First of all, if you are looking for a thriller, fast-pace, intense, full of actions type of movie, you can skip this one, as I'm sure you will be left unsatisfied and ended up rating this 1 out of 10. If you're expecting a very original plot that has never been done before, like ever, you can skip this too. But if you don't mind a familiar plot with a different touch, clever twist, solid acting, and good execution, then watch this movie, you will be pleasantly surprised.

What is interesting to me, after reading other reviews here on IMDb, is the fact that many people seemed to not fully understand the plot, calling it "plot holes". I thought the plot is simple enough, and for some people to not even understand it maybe proves that people nowadays are so used to being spoon fed, everything needs to be shown or told in a literal way in order for them to understand it. I mean, what part of APX03 and APX02 don't you understand? It's like a dead giveaway right there. And mother coming to see the woman and asking her "How do you think you could survive this long?" -that's like the biggest giveaway ever but still some people didn't get it. I don't want to give away too much so go ahead, open Netflix, and watch for yourself.

Chernobyl (2019)

Dramatization over realism. And... why are they speaking in British English?
21 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The Chernobyl disaster has long been my fascination. I researched and read up on it a lot when I was younger. Even wished to go visit the place one day. So it's only natural for me to check out this miniseries. Episode 1 was all I could finish. A couple of quick questions:

1. Why are they speaking English? 2. Why are they speaking BRITISH English??

Do the people behind this series think by using British English, they could somehow annoy the Russians/Ukrainians a little bit less than if they are using American English, or something? (One of the characters said at one point, "It's safe in here, this is built to protect against nuclear attack by the Americans". Awkward if this line is said in American accent, eh? Hey, why not make the characters speak in Ukranian/Russian in the first place??).

I did try to put the language issue aside and tried to get into the story instead. Except that you couldn't really get into it. All characters and events are sterotypical, stupid, and overdramatized. It's a shame that the people behind this series decided to go for dramatization over realism. Characters in this miniseries don't act like real people, they act like what you would expect characters in disaster movies would act. When the power plant exploded, 2 characters were shown in their home walking slowly toward the window and watched with mouth open. Disaster movie characters 101. It's okay if you like that kind of thing, but if you are looking for realism, connection, and maybe character development or at least realistic dialogues, this is not for you. I felt like I was watching War of The Worlds or Independence Day. Something cheesy like that, cheesy disaster movie. That's how it felt like. Not gonna watch any more episode, sorry.

A movie you have to like to not be called a racist?
1 March 2019
I'm not white or black, and I'm not American. I guess this allows me to see the film in a very neutral, unbiased perspective, and to judge it based on its own merits rather than the political issues surrounding it.

When I watched the trailer, my impression was that the movie was going to be hilarious, probably a subtle, lighter take on a heavy subject, with a strong ending that sends the right message to the audience. That was my expectation of the movie. Since it also ended up as a nominee for Best Picture at the Oscar, I expected a really good, solid movie that deals with the subject of racism in a unique, creative way. Instead, what I got was a dragging movie full of cliches, uninspired dialogues, and in-your-face message before the credits rolled.

I was left underwhelmed and very disappointed. Not only that the movie was such a drag, I didn't like how one-sided and stereotypical it was. I think the reason this is so highly rated is because people are so afraid of being labeled "racist" for not liking the movie. That, and the political views that it projects, some people want their views to be validated. Pardon me, I'm a person of color and I didn't enjoy the movie.

The Hours (2002)

Sad to think I might not be able to see a movie this good again.
10 February 2019
I first watched this movie when I was 20. I understood nothing. Fast forward to 16 years later, I watched it again yesterday, and was blown away. This is not a movie that would appeal to the masses. I understand now why I didn't get it when I watched it 16 years ago. This is a movie about life choices, the consequences, the effects those choices have upon the decision maker, other people, and their surroundings. The movie tries to capture intense feelings and emotions that can really be understood once you've experienced them yourself. Hence, the reason the movie doesn't have context or real story.

The 20 year old me didn't understand the movie because at the time I only had limited experiences in life. Haven't had to make difficult life choices, haven't had to deal with a lot of things on my own. (But life itself is funny, the more experience you have of it, the less you understand it). Having finished the movie also made me feel sad, sad to know that I might not be able to see a movie that is able to capture those intense feelings and emotions like this movie did, probably ever again.

Good movie EXCEPT for the last 10 minutes
3 November 2018
It's hard to rate this movie. The movie runs for 2 hours. The first 1 hour and 50 minutes was really good, I mean, REALLY good. About an hour in, I thought to myself, this is a really good movie, something really different than what we're used to, a horror movie that is not just about scaring its viewers. Good acting by Toni Collette, nice cinematography, good writing and directing, good buildup, unconventional scares, no jump scares at all. Because of that, I was hoping for the ending to be different, to match the buildup and setup it prepares the viewers. But I was let down.

The last 10 or 15 minutes of the movie shows us nothing original, nothing you have never seen before in many horror movies. This kind of ending has been done to death for decades, I was sorely disappointed. The little "twist" in the final moment seemed like something the writer had to come up with to make up for the weak third act.

This movie reminds me of House of The Devil, another slow burner type of horror movie which was really, really good until they ruined it in the third act. What can I say, I guess coming up with a strong ending is really hard, especially for horror movies. Maybe that's why most prefer to play it safe and keep horror movies simple. Maybe "simple" works better for horror movies anyway.

Kidding (2018–2020)
A show still has to entertain its viewers, you know?
28 October 2018
Okay, so I watched the show until the very recent episode, which is episode 7 "Kintsugi". When I first started watching, I put all my expectations at the door like one reviewer advised. I kept my mind open, like another reviewer advised. I've been a fan of Carrey since Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which means I gravitated toward his serious roles rather than his typical slapstick comedy. But I still find this show bleak, even after episode 4. I'm not looking forward to another episode. There's nothing particularly interesting to look forward to. No one in the show is likable, probably except for Mr Pickles (Jim Carrey) because you kinda sympathize with him, but even so, the feeling is not very strong because the show drags and you become tired of seeing the same thing in every episode, which makes you become tired of Mr Pickles too. Every episode you see Mr Pickles arguing with his dad while trying to get back into the lives of his wife and son. I tried to like the show, but let's face it, there's nothing entertaining about this show. Nothing clever, nothing interesting. A show still has to entertain its viewers, you know?

Boring? What did you expect to happen exactly?
19 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Not understanding the reviews that keep saying this show is boring. These people seem to keep saying this same thing on each episode since season 1. You would think they already get it by now that Better Call Saul is not Breaking Bad, but nope, they keep watching and somehow expecting something "big" to happen (like what?). This episode did an 8-months time jump and people still say "the episode progressed slowly". People who keep saying this show is boring should already get it by now that this show is definitely NOT for them, I mean, for real, it's season 4 already!

A Quiet Place (2018)

This movie needs to be parodied asap!
14 August 2018
Let me start by saying that this movie is only for people with low IQ. It may sound harsh, but it's the truth. Suspension of disbelief could go so far until you realized you couldn't suspend your disbelief anymore. The movie is just trying to insult your intelligence. If there is another installment of the Scary Movie franchise, this movie should be high on the list to be parodied, I think the parody will be really funny, I could think of tons of ideas for a parody.

The only reason I didn't give this movie 1 star is because I've seen much worse horror movies with similar theme in recent years (like Hush, oh boy..).

Do NOT believe the high ratings and the glowing reviews, they're mostly fake and probably written by people involved in the movie. I was duped by those reviews, many others were duped by those reviews, don't let yourself be duped too!

The best show on TV right now.
5 August 2018
This is probably one of the best TV shows I've ever watched. I did watch Breaking Bad up until season 3, mainly because of all the hype and my own curiosity. While I agree it was a good show, I was never really that interested in drug/cartel type of story line. I watched Better Call Saul because I've always liked Saul, didn't know I'd be hooked. I think Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould could write any type of TV show and it will be a hit. They're just brilliant, and this is a very brilliant show, don't miss it!

Loved the dogs, not the episode.
21 July 2018
The dogs were interesting, too bad the writers were getting more and more lazy as the season progressed. If they weren't going to give the viewers any backstory, the why's, the who's, the how's, and all that, at least show us more of the dogs' intelligence, a deeper look into the AI algorithm programmed into the dogs (I thought this show is about THAT - technology!). I loved how the protagonist counted from 99 to 1 and threw candy at the dog in order to trick the dog's AI algorithm. It would be great if the episode focused a little bit more on stuff like this. You see, for every great software program out there, there will be bugs, logic errors, weaknesses. Imagine an episode about human intelligence vs artificial intelligence coded by humans.

Some people could pretend like this episode is about "humans emotions" or "imaginations" or "cinematography artsy". The truth is the writers didn't actually give the viewers much to chew on, they just put together a generic post apocalypse plot with robot dogs in place of zombies. And they made the episode into black and white so that some art people could feel special and think they "get it".
