Out on a Limb (2005)
the magnificence of "out on a limb"
Every so often, aside from the laborious drudgery that the Hollywood's, Bollywood's and now Nollywood's callously discard at we noble consumers like the spent box of Kentucky Drive Thru there comes something magnificent. Something that simultaneously shakes you like a Tsunami and melts your plasma into a toffee apple. Something that heats up your café olé without you even going into the kitchen.
I am referring to "OUT ON A LIMB". Obviously. Not since Fellini's 8 1/2, have I had the privilege of imbibing myself in such artistry losing myself in a maze of charismatic characters; prescient prose; dramatic drama and alluring actors. The complexity of the chef, reminds me of Greenaway's stolid 'RICHARD" in his 1989 masterpiece. Though perhaps merged with Nigella Lawson to add a bit of masculinity. I literally drooled all over my Fish McMuffins during the dinner scenes. Absolute brilliance.
Lo, oh lo! Those compassionless scorekeepers - "Film Critics" will have their duplicitous mendacity REVEALED should they not score this film as I do: 9/10. This film should be called "OUT OF THIS WORLD".
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
finally: a movie as irritating as american beauty!!
every so often one has the displeasure of seeing a REALLY shlock film. my last was american beauty, and can say with absolute confidence that matrix two is worse. i can't decide who was more boring or unconvincing, morpheus or neo. the producers really had a pretentious feast: the "kiss" scene in the bathroom nearly made me puke. worst of all, was the g-d like portrayal of a very ung-dlike morpheus, particularly with the stalest cinematography in the book- the shining light on his bald head. pathetic. no wait, the worst was yet to come! the ridiculous, un-sexy visuals of the trance/rave (?????!!!) party, interspersed with neo and trinity's "climax" almost had me on the floor. for $100m plus, one would think that the hermetic wachowski's could have found something more original than using the same boring slowed down fight scenes, and the plasticine video-game like graphics. in fact, one should rather go and play a video game than watch this tripe. you will see equally good special effects, and may even feel rewarded afterwards.
the only reason i give this a three out of ten is because of the cool villain smith-who i can only wish will kill all the mongrels who chose the "correct" pill in the coming third one!
Casino (1995)
scorcese's finest
undoubtably scorcese's finest film. however true to the real story the film may be, scorcese asserts hegemony over the position of "the best man for the job" in telling a gangster story. perhaps what is best, is how pesci and de niro show the true colors of method acting. while watching, the viewer does not see pesci and de niro, they see santoro and rothstein. sharon stone even managed to rise to the occasion. outstanding documentary styly story, with all sorts of convincing tricks: voice-overs, brilliant camera-work, exquisite editing. the overall picture for me is a nine out of ten. brilliant film-making!
