Begotten (1989)
Strangely Interesting
Originally I hated this film upon first viewing. I saw a bootleg pirated internet copy on a dorm room TV in my buddies' dorm room when we decided to go down a list of art films we wanted to see. We watched this were severely disappointed. My original rating was a 2. I thought it was boring, pretentious, and overrated. But the more I went back and watched it, which I strangely kept thinking about the film. I watched it a few times and I liked it more every time. So at the moment this film is at a 5 for me. It's not accessible and it is challenging to watch and it somewhat becomes an endurance for your eyes to figure just what it is that you are seeing. SO take my review for what it is worth. I'm sure I'll get told; "You're an idiot you don't get it." or "Stick to big budget Hollywood garbage." But this is how I feel about the film. So there.
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Not "Amazing" in the slightest
The Amazing Spider-Man did not "amaze" me in the slightest. Garfield was an incredibly stale and boring Peter Parker and the film itself did not invoke any sort of emotion with me at all. There are also points where The Lizard looks absolutely laughable. Sam Raimi's 2002 Spider- Man is the DEFINITIVE film adaptation and is far more fun than this film ever was. This one didn't have the charm, the wit, the humor, the emotion, or the performances of that film. This was not very good. Plus I couldn't stand Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Spider-Man. He didn't seem to fit at all and he was such a dick in it too. The only thing good is it has some moments of impressive cinematography and Leary is in it but they kill him so forget that.
Only God Forgives (2013)
A dark and mesmerizing cinematic experience
A strangely beautiful yet dark and gratuitously violent film. Refn's follow-up to Drive puts him and Ryan Gosling together again and if you thought Gosling spoke little in Drive; he says even less in this movie. A lot of people have criticized the film for its cold portrait of violence that seems to have no purpose sometimes. My thought on that? Ridiculous; Refn doesn't put anything in a movie for the hell of it. With a movie this meticulous and metaphoric nothing is done for the sake of just doing it. Some people had the same complaint with Drive too, but this film amps it up even more. You find yourself surrounded with all these lowlife scumbag characters in a dark (yet neon filled) Thailand full of drugs, murder, sex trafficking, and of course revenge. You'd think with these kind of characters you wouldn't be invested at all and you'd hate them. It's the opposite really. You love to hate them and you are on the edge of your seat waiting for what's going to happen next. Everything from the performances, the multilingual script, to the practical effects, cinematography, and the ambient industrial/electronic score is enjoyable and suiting. I highly recommend this movie; very enjoyable and powerful.
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
A little too much at times
Very Frustrating at times with its signature Luhrman breakneck pace and inability to allow an audience to get into a sequence before cutting away; so many damn cuts. But it's fun to have a lot of music I like in it such as Elton John, Nirvana, Madonna, and Kiss. But there's so much with this movie that is too much. Too much going on makes it hard to like what's happening because you don't know what the hell is going on sometimes and for some reason every one shouts. But hey that's Luhrman's style I guess. It kinda turns me off though. I didn't like Gatsby, I didn't like Romeo and Juliet, and I barely liked this film. I've seen it once so I'm not sure if I'll need or want to see it again.
Batman Forever (1995)
Batman Forever isn't as horrible as some make it out to be. It is fun popcorn entertainment
I don't really see why people bash this film as much as they do. It's not nearly as horrendous as Batman & Robin. Sure Val Kilmer is stale most of the movie and there are a few moments in the film that are really not needed. And some people bash Tommy Lee Jones' over-the-top performance as well as bashing the over-the-top feel of the movie; it's a comic book movie. You cannot take it too seriously. It's meant to be fun. It is certainly not taking itself serious like Tim Burton or Chris Nolan's Batman films did. Have fun watching it. Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones give maniacally tasteful performances and it's quite a sight of awesome special effects, colors, lights, story, production design, and music.
The Lords of Salem (2012)
Such a hard movie to rate
Never has a movie made me feel the way this movie has. I enjoyed the hell out of it but I didn't feel good about it at the end. It's a great movie that I'm sure a lot of people won't like it or get it; but I like it a lot. Rob Zombie has come a long way as a director. This is his artistic masterpiece as it is a beautiful and operatic film while being dark and disturbing. The movie in the last few minutes incorporates such weird and hellish imagery to make your stomach twist and your heart race to such a drop. This movie is more of an experience you'd have to see to understand. Sheri Moon easily puts on her best performance in this movie portraying a varying range of emotions from glee to tortured and hauntingly disturbed. There's little bits of Kubrick, Polanski, Eraserhead, The Crucible, and of course Zombie. However this is not a perfect film. The film does drag in a few places, sometimes you're left there thinking "What was the point of that?" after certain scenes, and a few moments of poor dialogue.. But, nonetheless, I would certainly not hesitate handing over the price of a ticket to see this again.
Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966)
My favorite film of all time...well tied for first favorite
My favorite movie of all time. It doesn't get any better than Leone's Spaghetti Western masterpiece. The visuals are striking, the script is flawless, the acting is good, and the score is the best of it's kind. This film is an utter classic and is without a doubt the best Western and best Spaghetti Western. It's gritty, it's dirty, it's violent, it's compelling, it's clever, and it's perfect. This is one of those films that has inspired me to enter into the film industry myself and I do not think a film gets more of a nod from me than this film "There's two kind of people in this world; those with loaded guns and those who dig. You, dig."
Gone Baby Gone (2007)
Ben Affleck's directorial debut
Debut directorial film from Mr. Ben Affleck. I REALLY enjoy this film, lots to like about it and very few things to dislike. Mainly a few moments of bad acting that actually took me out of the film. But this is a great movie and made me look forward to more Affleck directed films. I think Affleck is a great director with a lot of promise and has made leaps and bounds from where he was ten years ago. I believe that Affleck has some great films in him and will impress us even further. He has made a mark on the film world so far with this, The Town, and Argo (which of course won the best picture Oscar but Affleck was snubbed on being even nominated for best director) so I can only imagine where he will go next.
Der Himmel über Berlin (1987)
A film that demands our surrender
One of the best films I have had the pleasure of viewing. Possibly the only secular Angel movie to never mention even the existence of God. The film is absolutely brilliantly poetic and so beautiful to look at and marvel at. Quite honestly after just the first viewing back in November this is one of my all time favorite films. Bruno Ganz is his usual self in it; sublime. I strongly believe that he is one of the greatest actors on the planet. I cannot begin to describe the beauty and poetic-ism of the premise of an Angel wanting to lose his wings just so he can live a normal life and know what it is like to come home and feed the cat, have his fingers turn black from the newspaper, say "ah" "oh" and "ouch" instead of "yes" and "amen," to lie through one's teeth, and to love another person and have them know you actually exist. It's perfect. The use of black and white for the Angel's perspective and color for human perspective is absolutely genius. Seriously if you have even the chance to see this film do NOT hesitate; just see it and marvel at it's wonder. I love this film.
The Hound of the Baskervilles (1988)
The Best Interpretation of Holmes to Date
Easily my favorite and easily the best Sherlock Holmes interpretation. I have seen many Sherlock Holmes shows, films, etc. but this is staggeringly accurate and spot on. I love this film and it is so faithful to the source material while introducing some interesting things. The acting of course is sensational with Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke as Holmes and Watson.
I highly recommend this film and this canon of Sherlock Holmes to any fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's material. Other great films/series in the same universe and with Brett and Hardwicke would be The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Sign of Four, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, Masterpiece Mystery, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.
