Man on Wire (2008)
It doesn't get better than this
This heist thriller/heist/documentary follows Philippe Petit and his loyal team of thrill enthusiasts as they plan the most dangerous stunt to date (1974)—walking between the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Worthy of its Academy Award-winning glory, Man on Wire will leave you at the edge of your seat, and wanting more. What's beautiful about this film is that it weaves back and forth through re-enactment footage to modern-day interviews with ease. Unlike most documentaries that use re-enactment footage, the editor of this film made certain the footage didn't seem cheesy or forced. Instead, the editor gave a stylistic twist unlike any re-enactment footage I've ever seen in a documentary before.
The Messenger (2009)
Welcome back, Woody.
Imagine this: You're an Iraq war veteran whose day job is to inform family members of the death of their loved ones. Fortunately, you don't have to think too hard about this one. Instead, Oren Moverman's emotional masterpiece The Messenger offers a fictional portrayal of men in uniform whose job is to heal other people's emotional wounds after dealing with the death of a loved one, despite the fact these do-gooders have yet to figure out how to heal their own demons. This Academy Award-nominated film features noteworthy names such as Woody Harrelson and Steve Buscemi, among other rising stars you won't want to miss. It's a breath of fresh air to see Woody Harrelson in a role such as this one.
Boy Wonder (2010)
Must see!
It's no surprise Boy Wonder won Best Editing at the Rhode Island Film Festival. Being a resident of Providence, I always try to make my way to the fest each year. And while every film at the fest is most definitely a hit or miss, I can honestly say I haven't seen such a stellar film as this fest in a long time as good as Boy Wonder. Not only was the editing intensely good (hence the award), but the cinematography was gorgeous and the story was strong. Expect to see Caleb Steinmeyer in the near future. There's no way some up-and-coming director won't want to hire this kid. What a great performance. His intensity and method acting was incredible in this film. And and all, if you have a chance to see this film, I highly suggest you do. You won't be disappointed.
