Blank City (2010)
I'm watching this now
I really liked how this movie reminds us of a time when New York was more dangerous and dirty. If you really like Sonic Youth and other angular music, then you should see this as a refresher course. The film also touches upon how AIDS claimed the lives of some of the people mentioned. I would recommend another film about the Grammercy Park Hotel, which also touches on this period before Reagan. Maybe something had to do with Andy Warhol being alive at the time? This was also an era when there was at least some artistic creativity which didn't pander to mainstream America. Yes, it's true that Richard Kern took erotic photos of young girls, but they have an edgy artistic quality which today still seem a little dangerous. It's hard to believe the girls now are in their late 40's early 50's(or maybe AIDS victims).
The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Mainstream movie experience
I just watched this movie today on cable, and tried really hard to find it engaging, but the story and characters were very bland. A much more likable and entertaining film on an identical subject is "13 Going on 30". It's too bad that the girl's boyfriend is a big baby, and more frustrating that she is equally childish early in the film. I guess that's why I find it less entertaining than a "Sex in the City" episode. At least that TV series had some funny and raunchy scenes to anticipate.
As far as Meryl Steep's character, she was a rather good and firm boss. More than once was the line "do your job" uttered, which is the minimal job requirement for all employment. Why is this somehow considered too demanding? One would think that Anne's character (who's supposed to be a Northwestern graduate) would be smarter and better prepared for the job.
Anyway, at least it wasn't too long, and was rather painless morning movie viewing.
The Masque of the Red Death (1964)
I liked this movie
It's always one of those films which I have to view to the end. I didn't really get into Vincent Price until the last few years. He used to seem a little too corny for me, until I read more about the films themselves. After seeing this a few times in the past year, I can't help but feel repulsed by the banality of evil. I'm religious, but still am very liberal, and I find it horrible that there are still devil worshipers. Even though this is done in an over the top setting, I can't help but think there are people like Prince Prospero, who really believe that Satan is good? Price does a great job as an evil hand of the devil. Please do see this film!
28 Days Later... (2002)
This is not a zombie movie!
It is, however, a terrifying film nonetheless. For those of you who don't want to hear any spoilers, read elsewhere. I want to know why many who didn't like this movie liked ones such as "Re-Animator"? I rented that movie and found it to be a parody of itself. 28 Days has a much more serious tone. Other parts of this movie I found quite frightening are when the lead actor is being debriefed about his predicament and how early on, the rage attacks were taking place and it was later then that people knew it wasn't just random violence. The mental image of people trying to flee by plane and not being able to do so because everyone had the same idea. That could have been incorporated using flashback scenes. The best part of this movie is the type of virus it is: RAGE! What could be more frightening than ourselves going mad? Answer is: Look at Charlie Manson. I don't believe in ghosts, vampires, supernatural ghouls, or alien monsters. Viruses and human monsters are real. As long as we remain human and not cyborg, we will always have to worry about the former.
Day of the Dead (1985)
I like this movie
I saw this movie with my parents back in 1985 at the theater (poor taste in judgement)and thought it was better now than then. I had to see it again because too many people have compared it to "28 Days Later". I liked "28 Days" but that is another review. Day of the Dead was pretty gloomy and had some potentially great plots which didn't go anywhere. The thing that really bothered me was why the unstable character wasn't just hogtied and left in isolation. Other questions are: Why didn't they all plan an orderly escape, since there was a helicopter outside? Didn't the commander in charge realize that there was no government, and that he could do whatever he wanted without anyone's approval? How could there even be an underground facility in Florida, since it is all swamp land? These are things the director maybe had in mind, but wasn't able to make it happen, probably due to money. It was more frightening than Dawn of the Dead because it didn't have dopey music and it was not in a shopping mall. The best thing about this movie is the musical score. Second best was the makeup and last was more a more serious tone out of a silly subject. It must be difficult to make a zombie film because of the topic and general overkill of the subject. Best suggestion is for each person to think of what he would do in a world populated by zombies and then have nightmares about it!
Cage Without a Key (1975)
I kind of remember this movie
I would like to see this movie again, but don't feel like buying it. Some interesting points of this film are the lesbian connections, and that is why I probably remember having a liking toward it. As a 35 yr. old male now, why not? At the time, I was just 7 yrs. old, and equate it to "Jenny-portrait of a teenage runaway" with Eve Plum from the Brady Bunch. Mybe I can find it at a good video store. Yesterday I went therem, and found out they carry "Trilogy of Terror". I hope I like this just as I did back in 1975.
Mary Poppins (1964)
Disney's finest film
Mary Poppins is one of the better movies of all time. It has the magic Wizard of Oz has, but more relevent to contemporary society. Every time it's on TV, I have to watch the whole thing. You know it has to be a great film when Robert Smith of the Cure named it his favorite movie. Anyway, tell me what you all think?
