My Perfect Romance (2018)
Cute movie, similar to others like it but satisfying to watch
I like a good corny romance flick every now and again, and I wasn't disappointed with this one. The acting isn't perfect, in fact it's a little awkward at times, and the dialogue is kinda bad sometimes. Then again, they're almost all like this. Despite these flaws that always seem to come with these kinds of movies, there is a charm to it.
Wes Robinson, a handsome and single business man/CEO of the family business, is crunched for time trying to find something to win back his good graces with his parents, and he chooses to spend his time marketing a new dating algorithm created by Vivian Blair, a beautiful software developer. During a TV interview, both Wes and Vivian are challenged to put their new software to the test and create dating profiles, and bring their new matches onto the show at Valentine's Day.
My favorite part of the movie was seeing some of my favorite people from various televisions shows and movies who have seemed to disappear. This includes Lauren Holly and Morgan Fairchild.
To Jennifer (2013)
I actually really liked this one
At first, To Jennifer seems like just another found footage video, and if it weren't in the "Horror" section of Amazon Prime, it would have been unclear where this was going. It took a while to set the exact tone, which was being set slowly throughout the film until it practically hits you in the head.
In the beginning, seemingly normal guy Joey talks about how he got an accidental text message from his 2-year-long girlfriend Jennifer, How about you come finish what you started last night ;) He explains how he plans on bringing his cousin Steve with him to his hometown (I'm not entirely sure if the movie ever said the name of the town) to record on video the events leading to him catching Jennifer cheating.
A few snags are caught. First, the two get kicked off the airplane because Joey has a panic attack in the plane bathroom while they are trying to take off. He ends up hospitalized for a few days because of it.
Their friend Martin picks them up from the hospital, several hours late. He's a stoner and a party animal, and he convinces a reluctant Joey to go out partying and try to "forget about Jennifer." However, Joey is unable to follow through with Martin's attempts to get him some action, and he hides out in the bathroom and documents himself vulnerably telling Jennifer he could never cheat on her like she did to him. It seems very real and touching.
The next couple of scenes involve a telephone interaction between Joey and Jennifer which is a huge red flag. Something just isn't right here! (It's pretty predictable.)
After lots of boyish arguments between characters, the climax of the film happens where we finally meet Jennifer and find out what this whole thing was really about. Like I said, it's predictable. However, its redeeming quality is the acting which is actually above average considering the genre. The song at the end, in my opinion, was pretty good. Pappas has a very nice singing voice, despite the fact that in context, it was extremely creepy. Also considering it was shot entirely with an iPhone, this is a unique film that I did not want to look away from.
In Memorium (2005)
Mildly boring throughout, with most ridiculous ending. Worst haunting idea ever.
In Memorium is a found footage film just like most of the others. Dennis is a newly-diagnosed cancer patient who moves in with his girlfriend Lily to a creepy house so that he may document the remainder of his days. He gives a guided tour of the house on camera, going through every room one-by-one. The only notable items are run-down swimming pool in the back and a creepy hallway with a "sitting room" at the end, which he does not enter. The rest of the movie is very predictable.
Throughout the film, Dennis begins to blood profusely out his mouth and ends up with some pretty nasty sores on his back and around his mouth. In fact, there is so much blood in the bathroom at one point, it could be confused with A Nightmare on Elm Street.
The actors playing Dennis and Lily weren't terrible. The dialogue wasn't even that bad. Dennis's brother Frank, however, was annoying (he was supposed to be). The scares weren't that scary. It was really the sounds that made the movie in this case. There was a sound near the swimming pool that made me wonder if I had actually even heard a sound. It was well done.
The story went from mildly boring to ridiculous toward the end when we figure out who is haunting the couple. The ending made me wonder why I wasted my time with the film to begin with. After the last 15 minutes of the movie, I don't think I would recommend this one to anyone unless they absolutely love the found-footage genre and refuse to take no for an answer and must watch every single one ever made.
