The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023)
Most Important Scene Changed
The acting was mostly alright, but sometimes felt a little forced. To me the worst part was that the most important scene near the end was changed taking away all the power from the main female character. She ended up feeling empty and utterly useless. She couldn't have even been used as eye candy by that point since her camera angles always seemed to catch her in the most unappealing light they possibly could. The other power scenes for the female characters were all ruined for me since it seemed like they over played them times to try to stick it to the man moments. While they were those types of moments, as soon as an actor tries too hard to make it appear that, it has lost all it's power for me.
Galactica 1980 (1980)
Definitely Not as Good as Original Series
This series is not as bad as some people have made it out to be, but neither is it any where near as good as the original series. The FX are a bit cheesier for this one, but considering how much the original series cost, I guess that shouldn't come as a surprise. The characters were all pretty strong, though the acting come across as either too dead-pan or just plain monotone many times. The flying motorcycles are pretty awesome! Dr. Zee was plain annoying! It didn't help that they changed actors just a few episodes into the season either. Commander Adama should have been far more intelligent than he often come across, especially toward Cylon tactics. I think the story had a lot of potential and it is too bad that they were not able to to go along further, but it was a little hard to get past the bad acting.
Battlestar Galactica (2004)
Good . . . but a little weird
The new Battlestar Galactica isn't bad, it's just a little weird sometimes and seemed to try a little too hard to keep its audience on its toes. I tend to believe the way I saw Glen Larson seems to believe, a strong core of beliefs need not be boring if it is written properly. For an example of weirdness, lets go with the never-ending changes in the relationship of Apollo and Starbuck. It was a guessing game many times as to what would be the state of their relationship. The final three episodes were pretty interesting though. My main beef with the series is that, except for Commander/Admiral Adama, hardly any of the characters had any strength of character. They were all is wishy-washy as I can ever imagine. They even tried to make the Admiral appear wishy-washy in some of the episode previews in the later two seasons. I think the elder Adama was the best character in this series, he had a much harder time of things than the Adama of the original series and yet he always stayed true to sticking by the people he had sworn to protect. Sometimes anger got in the way a little, but not for very long.
The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall (2011)
Not Bad, But Not Spectacular Either
This isn't a bad adaptation, I agree with the other review that I read that the sets were spectacular! However, Christine and The Phantom were somewhat lacking for me. Both of them seemed to be trying too hard, and that just really chaps at me. I don't like to see people trying to prove themselves, it should just be something natural. Plus the makeup on The Phantom was too distracting, seeing his lips hangout from underneath the mask pulled my attention way from the story too much. I kept on rechecking to see if I really was seeing his lips or what right up until the final time his mask was pulled off. When they pulled out the other men who had played The Phantom, both my wife and I commented at how much better singers all of them were than the guy that played him in this rendition. We both also think that the Christine and Phantom from the 2004 movie were both more natural sounding and looking, I just cannot say enough how important it is to me that the actor/actress appear natural in their role. Perhaps the theater is the wrong place to expect that, but then again so many of the other actors in this rendition gave such natural performances, even the two opera house owners (which was not impressed upon me from the recording featuring the original cast). I know I've spent so much space talking about what I didn't like, but I think it deserves stronger detailing this time. The production truly was otherwise first rate! I even enjoyed the little speech from Andrew Lloyd Webber
