Reviews
Mr. Right (2015)
Deserves the R rating - but - Crazy and in some respects, funny.
As stated in the past, I don't write reviews, just give my humble opinion.
The beginning was a little slow, and had me guessing. Ms. Kendrick goes into a closet to get away from a shocking sight - too her - that she wants to get away from.
Mr. Rockwell is doing his thing as a hit man, but one with a sense of humor.
Plenty of shooting and blood, a little too much for me, but others may not notice, after all, it is about a "Hit Man."
The movie turns into a fun type of crazy, and just keeps getting crazier.
I noticed someone listed a "goof" of the rain coming down in a late scene, they also should have mentioned the rain falling in straight streams down, nah, I don't think that a spoiler, just like they said - a goof.
By the end of the film, I had to admit that I enjoyed it, much to my surprise.
If you see it, give it a chance. Good acting by one and all, a few fight scenes were good.
Tian jiang xiong shi (2015)
Riveted to the screen and thoroughly enjoyed it.
WOW, I have to admit, I didn't have any idea what this film would be like, or what it was about. However, with Mister Chan in it, I wanted to see what it was.
Everyone in it earned their pay, and of the ones I saw, they surely did a good job of it.
As I have said in the past, I do NOT write Reviews, I give my humble opinion. Let those that read this make up their own minds.
The character played by Mister Chan, has a United Nations long before it was even thought of, and they do it well.
From the beginning, I was wondering just what was going to happen, and then as the story moved on, I was taken along with it which gave me pleasure.
YES, I would watch this film again, and I am sure that I would enjoy it at least as much as I did this time.
Keep up the good work Mister Chan.
Road House (1989)
Not a disappointment.
When you have Patrick Swayze, Sam Elliott, Ben Gazzara, and Red West together in the same movie, things are gonna happen - THEY DO!
I sat back and just enjoyed myself, hell, they were doing all the fighting, I was comfortable.
Story content, okay, guy takes on the task of taming one of the wildest bars around, but quite a few stumbling blocks are put in his way.
Not a movie for the average family, maybe okay for the adults, and one fun kick-ass movie for those that like them.
I don't write reviews, just give my humble opinion, and I will say that this is not for those looking for role models, it's more for those who like to yell a little bit and kick up their heels. Not a movie to learn the Martial Arts, or Boxing, or even Wrestling, just one to enjoy. See what you think.
Cop Car (2015)
Where will it lead - interesting but somewhat puzzling.
The title got me to wonder, just what type of movie did they make about a "Cop Car," so I watched it.
The two kids work their way up to driving it, and again, I thought: "Wow, bet they have fun with the red lights and siren - hehehe." they did.
As the movie progressed I found it to be interesting enough that it caught me and was taking me with it, that happens sometimes.
At first I could not figure out why a cop car was sitting in a little hollow with a few trees around, and NO Cop or Sheriff, I wondered where they had gone, and why. We find out later.
It seems to start when the two kids take a walk for something to do on what looks like a summer day, why do they do that, kids do things sometimes - just - to do them.
The first car the kids and the cop car go by on the highway, is someone special, it surprised me, and got a good laugh.
The Sheriff, as played by Mr. Bacon, is truly something else, if anyone on this planet ever had the word "looser" tattooed on their forehead, that Sheriff would be the one.
All of those in this movie did what they were supposed to do, and perhaps more in some cases, it all contributed to an enjoyable, but not so nice movie for me.
I would call it intense in some places.
Home Sweet Hell (2015)
I wish I could give a spoiler - but no
I have recently seen this film, and because I readily enter my comments on movies and television shows that I like, I felt that I should also say something about this noted exception.
Possibly on an artistic scale, there were things that were of value to some. I will say that I did enjoy the acting - as acting.
I started watching what I thought could be a sexual farce, and it was fairly good, however - for me, that ended about three quarters of the way through this - whatever.
May I say, that others are very welcome to view the film, and enjoy it all you want.
Like I said, about three quarters of the way through, it went from peaches and cream with a little lemon tossed in for flavor, but when it turned - it turned sour for me. Enjoy if you wish. I think it was a waste of time.
The Railway Man (2013)
Involved - yes, that is how I got in this story and film.
In times of war as well as other times, things are done which some do not consider normal, and in their judgments all is not always right. I must give the actors a lot of credit because they filled the characters most adequately, a look here, a step there, in my opinion they each measured what and how they were going to do it to convey the correct thought, and that is one of the important steps in acting.
The story was not only compelling for me, but it rivaled many I have seen unfold, and as the others had done, this one had many turning points.
Rent, buy or whatever, this is a very good film, and worth the viewing, although, not quite for the faint of heart.
Lucy (2014)
Another "Sit back and enjoy" movie that I liked.
Liked the story, and the actors all truly earned their money. Although, during most of this motion picture, I kept thinking, what if the bad guys decide to put that formula to use with their own "bad guys," to go up against Lucy.
Really some scenes that were an eye-full. But, I just resigned myself to watch it and see what developed, and it did develop.
If you like science fiction, and the idea of a Woman getting to turn the tables on the bad guys - you might enjoy it. I would only watch it once or twice, but I would and did watch it.
Some of the visual effects were really eye catching. Sure there were some technical mishaps, but usually there are. That does not make it right though.
American Sniper (2014)
This needed to be told.
I had read and heard much about this film, most was not worth mentioning, as far as I am concerned.
This motion picture was done very well, and everyone I saw did a fine job.
The story was told in a much better way than I expected, having been in somewhat like situations myself, I recognized, dramatically, a few of the things I had gone through, and Mr. Kyle brought it off very well.
In some actions and situations, if you are paying close attention, you can key in on some of the things that cause you to have the thoughts you had, and why you did what you did, no other can get inside of your head and figure them out, you do as you do, right or wrong in the view of others that may feel they know best.
Worth at least a one see, plenty of action. Very good that they at least got some of the meaning across to me.
Broken Flowers (2005)
Oops - was I pleasantly surprised.
First, a good job was done by all involved in this work. I missed the first fifteen minutes of this film, and had to guess as to why Mr. Johnston was searching.
Not watching Every detail, I just went with the actors, and thoroughly enjoyed it, all but the last.
Having read the description of this movie, only a minute or two ago, I now know why things ended as they did - sounds logical, although I would have given Mr. Johnston a different reason to go searching, which has been done, but I feel Bill Murray could have carried it away with flowers.
One scene truly surprised me, and it was well done. I would have to say, even though I was wrong in my idea of why Mr. Johnston was searching, I did enjoy the movie, and as I have said, a good job was done by all.
Always looking forward to Bill Murray's work.
The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
I saw it once and am glad I did.
Yes, the principals are excellent doing their jobs. However - for me Emily Blunt stole the show followed very closely by Stanley Tucci, these two really took their roles, started in the basement with them, and proceeded to ascend to the Penthouse.
Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci are, figuratively speaking, guardian angels to the newly hired young lady.
If I had invested in this production, I would be very pleased with the end result. There were some snafus to be sure, but I didn't feel that they took away from the interesting story, or the sometimes frenetic pace.
Well worth seeing at least one time, worth the price of a ticket. If you wish rent or buy it, you may watch it more than once.
A well earned plus is that two very picky friends of mine liked it very much, and that carries some weight with me, a non reviewer:)
Whiplash (2014)
INTENSE - you got that right.
Hooked, that is what I became, front start to finish. I originally thought it would be something good with drums, and some maybe, tongue-in-cheek comedy, because I like Mister Riser in anything he does that I have seen.
HOWEVER, this was one thundering surprise for me!
The pursuit of perfection is one hell of a hard road to travel, and this movie shows it, from a few angles.
The lead characters do a truly splendorous job, whatever they were paid - they earned every penny, and most likely more.
If you want to hear music, and good music, this is a good movie.
If you want to see some excellent acting, this is a very good movie.
Start out with a goal in mind, figure out what ways are available to you to get there, then - getting there is the truly hard work. But if you are committed, you will make it - if you have what it takes. Who should have an idea of what it takes - why, someone who has the qualifications.
Except for one thing of my personal taste, which you will know after watching this movie, I say to one and all - WATCH IT, it is fantastic.
#Stuck (2014)
A good time was had by one and all *slight spoiler*
I decided to watch this movie because it was available on cable, and the price was right. Also the idea, I felt was a good one. Having lived in Los Angeles most of my life.
At first I had to get involved, Ms. Zima coming into view helped that. Then as things developed I was slowly getting hooked.
The association of Ms. Zima and Mr. Moore came across as a very good one, and they earned their wages with the performances they gave.
Many years ago I wrote a little story about someone being chased on the freeway system in Los Angeles, and how lonely it really was, even though all those people were there. In this movie it captures some of that loneliness, which I don't think many relate with. I really liked Ms. Zima's finger switch, an old gag but not seen in many years.
A really fun movie, and worth the admission price, if you can - watch it.
Also Mr. Moore is in the television show Forever, and does some good work.
Snake Eyes (1998)
Worth the money to me.
The movie had me hooked from the start, maybe I was easily led by the nose, if so, I enjoyed every minute of it. Of course it helped that this movie had some very good actors.
I don't write reviews, I just give my humble opinion.
One part of that opinion is about the way the CREDITS at the end of the movie was done. Bright White text on a scene in the movie, for me, easy to read, and the speed at which they were shown, excellent for me, not to fast and not to slow, really glad to see that for a change from the speed reader hard to read credits of so many other movies.
I to liked the appearance of the jewel at the end. Watch for it!
The Sessions (2012)
Humans doing their thing.
I don't write reviews, I just give my humble opinion of some things, and this picture deserves a mention for sure.
Sexual Intercourse, a person with disabilities, two very tricky subjects to deal with. However - in my humble opinion, this movie, does deal with those subjects, and it does it most splendidly. All those involved in the making of this movie I feel, should be proud of their work.
I thought that the movie did a good job of sharing a little bit of what the main character has to contend with on a daily basis. It also gives us a view of how Helen Hunt's character goes about doing her job in a caring manner and with good taste.
If you like a movie that really has a story, then give this one a try, I think you will enjoy it, and perhaps like I, be touched by it.
Thank you to all involved with this movie, keep doing what you have done so well.
Arrow (2012)
It takes a lot of thought.
From the first showing of this series, it was obvious that someone was putting a lot of thought into most if not all aspects of this show. I do think that sometimes they have resorted to the write the story, then figure out how it was done tactic, that some series use. However, to me it has happened only a few times, most of the time you need to pay attention, close attention, and you will be taken along with what is happening.
REALLY like the actors and the characters, although I do hope that the lead character starts giving his partners more respect and challenges, which it looks like may have started - we shall see.
The computer whiz cute blonde is one who really fits in with the two guys, and in that case the guys do respect her, and show it.
Only one question, just where did Step Father go to now??? A very good actor, and I feel his character and Oliver could get closer. Maybe I missed something, but where is he, and please bring him back.
Action, some romance, suspense, you will find it in this show.
Enjoy
Hanna (2011)
If you like suspense - this is well worth your time
So many reviews have said so much about this film. Let me just say this, everyone in this film earned their pay, and did it very well. It took me from front to back, and I wondered why it was over so quickly. Rules for a review say I have to put ten lines, so here goes. It starts out in the woods, and ends in a tunnel. I thought at first, shame this girl has to be so deadly at times, but at other times you hope she takes someone out. Not a Wonder Woman type, she depends on herself, and does a very good job of things. The actress Cate Blanchet is superb in her role, I hated her every minute, except for the very sexy ones. Rent or buy, it is worth the time.
Drumline (2002)
Once again I have found a new move for my list of favorites.
Having read johnharrison-1 review, I have to agree completely. However, I have had some musical training, and have tried drums. Give me a Trombone any day:)
I didn't get into this movie for about five or ten minutes, but once in, you could not get me away from it. I truly enjoy drums, from bongos to kettle, I like them all. The snair drum when played by someone who knows what they are doing, is really something to listen to, so, I guess you would say I enjoyed this movie. YES! Just wish I had recorded it, next time it comes around, I am going to get the soundtrack if not the whole thing. The finish of the competition is perfect. Buy or rent, you should enjoy this one. Loved the part where the Instructor learned a lesson.
Des hommes et des dieux (2010)
Make up your own mind
This film had me captivated, I could see the interaction between the characters, and how each personality blended with the other to give us the all to sad true story. I have noted that some reviews have pointed out this actor or that, my champion of the group is Luc played very well by Mr. Lonsdale. The scene where he and another are doing the dishes, and having a conversation, Luc asks the other a question, which on the surface seems to be in a mocking sense, however it is much deeper, but the other responds, and then leaves. Luc understands so much, but does it in his own calm way.
Thanks to everyone connected with this movie, one of the best. The real Monks, perhaps have already said many prayers for those who killed them.
Rent or buy, do it, you should consider it something you are happy about spending the time to watch.
El secreto de sus ojos (2009)
in the Categories it listed Drama, Mystery, and Thriller
I would not call this movie a "thriller!" It is one very well done Drama, Mystery, and Love Story. Very seldom do I watch a movie with sub-titles, however, this is one of the few, and I was attached to every word on the screen. No - I surely did not want to miss a thing.
For my personal taste, they could have left out a few of the curse words, but, I thought the dialog to be very good and go with the atmosphere of the story.
All who put this movie together did a very good job and earned their pay.
I thought it to be nice and tight, going from one to the other, but keeping the viewer in tow.
It is now one of my favorites, what else can I say.
If you get the chance to see it - do so, but be prepared for some shocks on the way to the end. Not for the youngsters. Blood, and violence, but not a lot.
Enjoy this fine movie.
Miss Tatlock's Millions (1948)
I don't want to leave
I said that to my Mother after seeing this movie at the theater, she said it was time to go home, I asked if we couldn't see the movie again. I got my answer with a gentle tug of my arm and we were on our way home.
John Lund, one of my favorite actors, and the whole cast of this film are really very good. I was inside that movie with Skyler and following his every step, laughing, oh my yes, I was laughing and giggling, it was nice to see the smile on my Mother's face when she would glance over at me as I was laughing.
One very enjoyable movie, if you can rent or buy it, do it, you will enjoy it!
O' Horten (2007)
It made my list of favorites + +
This film got me the same way that The Gods Must Be Crazy did, in that I watched a few minutes of it one day on the Cable channel, but turned off the television for something meaningful. Was I WRONG! As with The Gods Must Be Crazy, one day I watched it all the way through, and found it to be truly enjoyable.
About this film, O'Horten, I have read other reviews and most of them got what I did out of it, oh, some things were different, but, something were also the same.
As a fine watch is engineered and made to exacting standards, so was this film. Mr. Owe, as well as the others, did as he was hired to do, and he did it so very well.
This film has a message in it that a lot of people today need to know about, it will do them some good.
I remember thinking as Odd went into the restaurant and sat down, " there ARE still places out of the way like that where people function daily and contribute to the actions that must take place for things to go where they are meant to go."
One warning, if you let it, this film will take you into it, and you will go from one scene to another as Odd does. Experience the music, atmosphere, the implied things, and all the other good that radiates from this film.
I will very gladly watch this movie over and over again, anytime that I know it is being shown.
To those who have read this review, I say, rent it if you can, or catch it on Sat or Cable, but do watch it.
My thanks to all involved in the making of the film, Mr. Owe, you did a very fine job Sir.
High Barbaree (1947)
I agree with Tom Jefford's review completely
I hope the following words do not turn some folks off on this truly good movie. It is a sweet movie! Want to get lost in something nice, get this movie, want to feel good about friendship and romance, get this movie. I usually say "the actors did their job and earned their pay," well they surely did in this one. With me, anything June Allyson did was super for me. With Mr. Johnson, I can say, I like just about all of the work he has done, that I have seen. Brigadoon, is one of my favorites with him. When the movie started they had me, and took me along with the story, and I am very glad they did. To all involved with this movie, thank you.
Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
Hollywood goes to the drags with a psychologist
I like this movie! I have this movie! I have been to many places they used in this movie. But, it was Hollywood's version of hot rodders and knife swinging punks. ALL of the actors did what they were supposed to do for their pay, and they did it very well - I think. The fifties were my hot rod times, and did the drag strip thing and most of the other stuff in this movie. If you don't take this film too seriously, then I think you will enjoy it. At the time this movie came out, I would have done anything for a black Mercury like James Dean drove. Natalie Wood as his love interest is super, one of our very best actresses. Actually, I was kind of surprised that Robert Wagner didn't have a part in this movie, I think he could have helped it some. Rent/buy it, if you like cars, girls, teen romance, and friendly relationships, you will like this. The color is very nice, and the Observatory at Griffith Park never looked better.
From the Terrace (1960)
I would call this a taught romance story with big money thrown in
Have read a few of the other reviews, and I am not trying to write a "review," I am trying to put in my two cents worth about a movie, so that others may take them and use them to their benefit. The actors got me right from the beginning, and they had me by the nose all the way through this. I was with a very nice young lady as we sat in the car, yes in a "drive-in movie," we were hooked, the only necking we did was during intermission when the movie was over. ALL the actors earned their pay, I don't know what the author had in mind when they wrote the story, I don't know what the director had in mind, but - I sure did enjoy what I saw. I thought the ending to be very nice, and the photographic scene to be the most shocking. Rent/buy it if you like romance and a tale about big money because, this is it. My thanks to all who worked on this movie.
Red Dawn (1984)
War comes to the states
I guess I am easy to please, I enjoyed every bit of this movie, no - not the killing etc, but the story and the way it was presented. The actors all did their jobs and earned every penny they got paid. I am sorry to say, that the DVD you can get in the stores is NOT exactly the same film we saw in the movies/television, nope, some things have been added, and some taken out. I found this out after I gave away the DVD I had recorded from Cable - oh well. Do the additions/subtractions make a difference, to me they do. In one scene of the original first time I saw this movie, a solder bring their commander his uniform on a hanger, and says "tu uniforma," and the commander takes it. In the DVD I bought from the store, that don't happen at all, no uniform, and no line for the actor. As well as other things.
Sorry to say, I have noticed this same thing on DVD's of other movies, not all of course.
The actor who plays the History Teacher in the opening, does a very fine job of getting your attention, then taking you along with him as he goes outside.
In the 1940's I saw a movie "China's Little Devils," and Red Dawn reminded me of it, it is still one of my favorites. Harry Carey, we could sure use you today.
