Badla (2019)
Very Entertaining Film
I must be the only reviewer here that was unaware this was a remake of the Spanish film from 2016. Unfortunately there appears to be a lot of vitriol thrown at this for being an inferior remake of said film. It could have been worse - it could have been Hollywood's Dinner for Schmucks version of the Veber classic The Dinner Game - now there is a remake that should have got a series of 1's!
I watched this with a friend and we would see at least 300 films a year on the streaming services. Both of us would say it was in our top 20 for the year. The film got you IN right from the start - and kept you fixated as the plot unwrapped itself like layers of an onion as the lawyer suggested alternate hypotheses. The thing was, all these possible explanations of what supposedly went on were feasible which added to the intrigue.
The ending may have been a little predictable if one remembered that the couple were in amateur dramatics but that is a small criticism of the overall enjoyment that this film gave me.
Foe (2023)
Why make it in the first place
Movies are meant to entertain you - sometimes they make you think, sometimes they may you laugh. Other times you wish it to end as quick as possible like this near two hours of dreck. You have 2 people living out in basically a wasteland and don't appear to go to a supermarket often but they have food and drink. Neither appear to work and there doesn't appear to be a vegie garden attached to the house and yet they don't seem to be short of food or power. It is set in the future which is always a problem in terms of realism.
So the male is meant to go away on some spaceship but how he is selected is a mystery and then another man from an "agency" of sorts is supposed to observe their behaviours so they can clone a robot to replace him while the man is away.
And then he comes back and they live happily ever after.
God give me strength.
Les Norton (2019)
Waste of time doing this
Another reviewer said it was a wasted opportunity and I agree with that 100%. I read a lot of the books years ago and like Wenham says there was a lot of stuff in them that is not PC these days and they have navigated the course of adopting the PC softly softly approach which put the creators of the TV show in a corner and as such bears little relation to the flavour of the books. They were written probably about 20 years ago - different time - it may have been on the borderline of acceptability to have adapted them then - doing it 15 years later was folly.
The character of Les was another that missed the mark.
The Good Nurse (2022)
Decent film but subject matter is bit mundane
I watched The Good Nurse last night on recommendation of a couple of people who had seen it and raved about it. Once I saw the subject matter, I was thinking this is going to have to be a great film to keep me interested as the US Health system is to my untrained eye (I live in Australia) third world in a first world country - the vast majority can't afford health insurance and obviously the staff like everywhere in the world are underpaid and under appreciated. It reminded me of a problem we had in Australia some years ago with Catholic priests where they were just moved off someone's parish to become someone else's problem. So it appeared with one of the nurses who turns out to be like Dr Harold Shipman some years ago in Britain and as the guilty party says at the end when asked why did you do it - Because no one stopped me.
I figured the US health system was that bad generally so the film held no surprises for me hence the moderate rating.
