The Pilot (1980)
You're all missing the point. Read on...
The whole point of this movie is this: the PILOT is an extremely talented and conscientious guy with a serious problem - he is an alcoholic. It's a disease!! People without this problem can never begin to understand what it is like. Trust me. I know. The PILOT knows he has a problem. He knows he has to stop. He just can't. This movie is about a decent guy in constant battle with himself, and his struggle to recover. If you missed this, then you missed the point of the movie.
Charly (1968)
Good Movie. Cliff is great, but
This movie tries to match the emotional impact the short story had. I read it as a kid, many years ago, long before the movie came out. So, of course, I was disappointed in the movie. You simply can't translate a great written story into a movie. You just can't. Particularly this kind of story. Read the short story by Daniel Keyes II ( I think that's his name. It's been a long time since). If you're not teary-eyed at the end, there's something wrong with you emotionally. It's a really intense story. Cliff is great, and otherwise the movie is pretty darn good too.
44 Minutes: The North Hollywood Shoot-Out (2003)
Best street shootout between cops and robbers since the 1995 movie "Heat"
Plenty of action, that's for sure. Some minor SPOILERS below. One of the things I liked about this movie is that it accurately depicted the power of the high caliber bullet. These things can enter a car on one side, exit on the other side, and keep on going strong, no problem. Most movies have a guy taking cover behind something like wax paper, and pretending that he's adequately protected. This flick wasn't completely without the usual Hollywood fabrications, though. Those AK-47 clips hold 30 rounds. The bad guys in this movie were getting WAY more than 30 rounds out of a clip. And they fired so many rounds that they would've needed a couple of wheelbarrows to carry all the clips. That's Hollywood for you...
In real life, it's not hard to see why these robbers used such heavy firepower - they needed AK's because they were such lousy shots !! How else can you explain why they fired so many shots without killing anyone. And wouldn't you think that with all those rounds fired that at least one would have hit an auto gas tank ? Not only were they apparently lousy shots, they must have been pretty stupid as well. Wouldn't you think they would have used the people in the bank as hostages ?
Speaking of lousy shots, the cops weren't too good with their guns either. They fired 1500 rounds, and couldn't put two into the heads of the crooks, who supposedly were standing out in the open in full view !! At the beginning of the movie Madsen's character says they are the "best of the best". Best at what, eating doughnuts?
