This Savage Land (1969)
Stacy Daggart
I found this TV movie a quite satisfying one, albeit somewhat disjointed. It is what it is. A 60's low budget TV western with a surprisingly good cast. Barry Sullivan looks older than his years but plays his part well. The rest of the cast are decent too although second billed Glen Corbett only turns up near the end. Why George C Scott agreed to appear in this I don't know. The one real saving grace in this is the performance of John Drew Barrymore as Stacy Daggart. He has a real presence!!
The Devil Rides Out (1968)
Poor Leon Greene
A great film. One of Hammer's best horror films but with one massive flaw. Rex (leon Greene) is dubbed & by one of the most recognisable voices in the business (Patrick Allen). Such a shame as Mr Greene had a great, deep resonant voice himself. He was an Opera singer with amongst other groups, the Sadlers' Wells Company. The part should've been a step towards a fine career as a leading man but it sadly wasn't!
Pretenders (1972)
Wonderful TV series
I loved this series when it came out in the 70's. A rare telling of the Monmouth rebellion. Moves at a fast pace & fine location filming in the West country & Wales gives it a wonderful period feel. Fine acting all round & it makes me wonder why Curtis Arden didn't go on & make a career as an actor. He is very natural here!
Never Love a Stranger (1958)
Not quite a clunker
The film while not exactly a clunker could have been a lot better.
it has that late 50's b/w gangster feel to it like "Studs Lonigan" a couple of years later. A young Steve McQueen cast as a Jewish kid who becomes an attorney does what he can in a supporting role. The person who did have me riveted throughout was John Drew Barrymore who is pretty good in this although his character gets more absurd as the film goes on. Barrymore was a striking looking actor & had talent enough to have a much better career than he actually ended up having.
His lifestyle choices ruined all that, Lita Milan who plays Barymore's girlfriend retired from films all together shortly after & married the Prime minister of the Dominican Republic or something.
