Spring Breakers (2012)
A Rare Film
This is one of those rare movies that comes along once in a decade. Rare because you want all of the primary characters to die within the first 15 mins because they're all so stupid and superficial and poorly written.
Chimpanzee (2011)
Not a serious documentary by any stretch of the imagination
21 minutes and 33 seconds into the film and I was done.
What seemed to be a very interesting and potentially engaging documentary about the life of a Chimpanzee turned out to be a film that seems to be have been made for children as the main audience. The music is childish and Tim Allen's voice-over becomes excruciating pretty quickly. Nothing interesting really happens - well, at-least not for the first 20 minutes.)
We've seen it all before countless times on National Geographic and Discovery. There's no new content in Chimpanzee that would make me want to watch this for 1 hour and 18 minutes.
Cool, if you're going to watch it with your children but not recommended for serious adult viewing. You may come out rather disappointed and quite frankly, annoyed.
Bow Barracks Forever (2004)
The worst film I've seen....EVER.
Be warned! This is not a film...its a collection of bad actors. It boggles my mind how anyone can ever make such a bad film. The worst acting I've ever seen.
Nice cinematography, good grading. Good location. Thats pretty much the only thing good about this film. The music is terrible. Sound design is non-existent. Clayton Rodgers (Bradly Lobo) is the worst actor to have appeared on screen. He makes a 5 year old school play actor look like an Academy award nominee. I hate my friends for making me sit through this 'film'. Its a painful 118 mins....right from the first scene till the last. Its a pointless ramble that goes nowhere. I don't know what the director is trying to show through this film.
Propaganda (1999)
My 2 Cents...
Well, the film is certainly good looking. It features the 'saturated' look that is typical of Turkish films and communicates the geography well. But the film itself failed to hold me and I came out feeling not a 100% convinced. Apart from the many 'non-realistic' aspects of the film that previous comments speak of, it seemed loose and could have been much much slicker. The subject of the film was interesting and seemed to have plenty of potential.
This is probably my first Turkish film ever and I did not (at all) find the choice of actor for the role of Mehdi good. The actor seems to be an accomplished one but his face is comical and slapstick and an attempt is probably being made to induce laughter. His character too is slapstick and doesn't look like a serious effort.
All said and done..a good film but should probably be re-made.
Kikujirô no natsu (1999)
Very Impressed!
I have not seen many Japanese films but this one blew me away! 'Beat' was simply brilliant and has done an excellent job both as director and actor. I'm a fan now!
The background score was beautiful and moving. The whole film develops a sense of realism and one finds oneself easily realting to it, I did not realise when it stopped being a film.
But I will have to say that the best part for me was the climax...I was absolutely blown away when the kid asks Beat what his name is.
All in all, an excellent piece of work!
Monrak Transistor (2001)
Too Commercial?
I went to watch Monrak...without having ever heard of it and not knowing what to expect. It was enjoyable on the whole...but I felt it became a bit too commercial. The courting scenes between Pan and Sadaw was beautifully executed and was tremendously realistic. Siriyakorn Pukkavesh was delightfully brilliant! I simply loved the song that he sings to her in the room (before the father comes to shoot him). Visually, it was tasteful and well lit.
But, I came out feeling the film was 'stretched' just to fill up the 90 minutes.Too many things happen to Pan and too many situations arise. The "boat doctor' was totally uncalled for and didn't really add anything to the film.
It could have been much better had it been limited to 60 minutes or so.
