Coal Face (1935)
Coal Face
11 May 2003
Made by the acclaimed GPO film unit, Coal Face tells the story of what was then one of the biggest industries in the United Kingdom...MINING!!!

Although it has to be said for eleven minutes I found this to be extremely dreary and not very interesting at all.

The Plow That Broke the Plains

...This is probably a massively popular film within film fans in the United States of America (especially within the older communities!) ...I think as an english person I think alot of this I don't understand. ...I couldn't appreciate the depression and how bad it was and I think in many ways that was the point of this here documentary ...As a piece of film making though it is beautiful!

Ladri di biciclette
11 May 2003
Warning: Spoilers
...Ah this was a painfully good movie for many reasons.

(SPOILERS?) ...The story of poverty in Italy during a depressed era. A man who gets a job, something to be proud of so he can provide for his family, something the lead character so wants to do? ...So what happens on his first day his bicycle gets stolen by petty criminal. ...the rest of the film shows the desperate struggle to find the bicycle around the city and its markets. ...Some great scenes include a accusation scene where the accused turn on the lead after the accused suffers... It is also worth pointing out that if you notice there are many references on the set of the AMERICAN DREAM. ...The chemistry between the father and son is brilliant, and that ending you want the father to get away with it!

Triumph des Willens
11 May 2003
... Ok this is basically the biggest piece of propaganda you will ever see!!! ... I don't care what Reifenstahl says either. She often denies that Triumph of the Will is propaganda... maybe she should watch it again! ... I am not saying she is was a Nazi. This was a Germany that lived in fear of it's leader in many ways. But this is propaganda! ... You don't make a documentary film about a political party WITHOUT including cons and not call it a piece of propaganda! ... All that aside out of many of the documentaries I've seen this was one of my favorites! ... It is shot really well and Miss Reifenstahl in her day was a talented lady. ... If you ever watch this film you can see little shots which were later used by the likes of George Lucas is STAR WARS

... What can I say about "Man with a movie camera"??? ... In a naive way. I can honestly say it felt like one of the longest hours of my life! ... Mr. Dziga Vertov could have wrapped this montage much much earlier than he should have! ... But saying this, it makes me sad saying how I much I disliked it because I felt that I should have! I am a film student and give all areas of film making a keen viewing but as this continued the more I felt like sleeping!!! ... I did find parts of the soundtrack very enjoyable though!

Nanook of the North

...Ah Nanook of the North. ...Many a time I have been made to sit down and watch this through various film courses, and don't get me wrong I appreciate its importance in film making history BUT.... ... I personally am sick to death of it! Lets face it Flaherty cheats while making this documentary and makes Nanook's tasks looks much easier than they actually are!!! ... This is an over rated documentary! ... I just want it to leave me alone!

Welcome to Collinwood
8 May 2003
Warning: Spoilers
...Hmm did the film makers of this film run out of money at the end? I was totally disatisfied with the ending and Welcome to Collinwood as a whole. ...The acting is good but there talents are wasted.

(KIND OF SPOILER) ...I saw the few massive George Clooney fans leave in disgust as he had less screen time than Dame Judi Dench in Shakespeare in Love! The movie in the U.K was practically based around the fact Clooney was in it... I already knew of his screen time... but frankly didn't care! ...I laughed exactly twice....That's not good. ...I started poorly... introduced everyone BUT Clooney who just appeared! had an okay middle and a god awful end. ...Michael Jeter in one of his final films was alright, certainly on the up again considering his final project. ...Film though was poor!

...Hmm a poor movie indeed it was! I went to see this film, not reading any reviews and not seeing any trailers, I heard my friends say how they wanted to see it, the concept they told me intrigued me! I was not happy with what I saw though! ...The acting is poor (Why did Hilary Swank put her name to this?) and the special effects are among the worst in modern history! 1996's INDEPENDENCE DAY looked much better! Yes EVEN the bit in Independence Day where the dog jumps to safety! ...The script is cr*p and I don't feel any sadness when a life is lost and Delroy Lindo's invention in stupid (for now!) ...Tucci made me laugh in a couple of sequences though!!!

... I am not a comic book reader, I do not care which character is put into a film or not so I think that is advantage me! ... I liked X-Men but felt it was lacking in many areas... this blows X-Men totally out of the water! It's much better. The character stories are much better although they need to do something with Cyclops (mainly for the sake of James Mardsen's career!)... ... The popularity of this film and the way the movie ends suggests there MUST be a third installment... it will be most welcome to the masses!

Well done Bryan Singer, you've left the HULK movie a lot to do!

7.5/10 For This Type of Film!

...Hmm. A lot of big names (Morgan Freeman & Tom Sizemore) were put to this film along with the professions bright new leading men (Damien Lewis, (Sir) Jason Lee & Donnie Wahlberg) were brought together for DREAMCATCHER. Oh dear. ...I want to bring out positives, I really do! Fact being I haven't the book, so I can't say which is better! ...Jason Lee did what he does best and makes the world laugh in the first 1/4 of the film... Damien Lewis and Timothy Olyphant also started brightly... but once stuff started to go down so did the film! I think it is also worth saying I never once felt like leaving!!! ...Thomas Jane is frankly cr*p as a leading man (did we not notice this in Deep Blue Sea?), Morgan Freeman and Tom Sizemore are simply slumming it in what should have been a BIG film. ...It was more like an episode of a late night sci-fi program than a Kasdan big budget movie... Sadly I found myself laughing in all the wrong places!!!

A woeful effort.

Adaptation. (2002)
Adaptation

...What a fantastic film this was! Spike Jonze's is one of the best new feature length directors of today! Being John Malkovich was going to be hard to beat, but you know what in my opinion he's done it! ...This is mainly thanks to the GENIUS that is Charlie Kaufman! This isn't just any writers block movie, it's Kaufman fixing a situation by making his job much better! ...The story of the background to the making of this film goes that Charlie Kaufman is contracted to to adapt Susan Orlean's best selling novel The Orchid Thief. But like the best writers often do, Kaufman struggled to adapt... so he let his mind run free and decided to write about his struggle into an original script! ...The movies first half is a run of the mill guy trying to adapt book but fails. but as the film continues it drifts further into the plain odd! Mainly in the development of Meryl Streep's character!!!

Cage is fantastic in his finest role in many years. Yeah, I think Cooper deserved his Academy Award... Jonze and Kaufman deserve more credit for this film!!!

9/10 AMAZING!!!

Catch Me If You Can

DiCaprio has impressed me with his movie choices of late. I usually stay away from Leo's movies mainly because they've been poor (exceptions What's Eating Gilbert Grape & Basketball Diaries) but I cannot ignore the brilliance that is Martin Scorsese (Gangs of New York) and Steven Spielberg for this film.

It's nothing more than pop corn fun, a film which I enjoyed throughout and that includes the performance of DiCaprio, he certainly fit the bill well! The support cast are great, Hanks is good as per usual and Walken is also good, but didn't really deserve his BAFTA, I say this because I feel other performances in male supported male were better and on the screen longer.

Spielberg does the usual good job as you would expect.

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
5 May 2003
...J&SBSB boasts one of the biggest and best modern casts in the 00's so far! And for such a comedy it's a big achievment in its own right! ...The end of the View Askew World is over! And now with Jersey Girl just months away we await for a new chapter in the careers of Kevin Smith and Scott Moiser! ...This was a nice way to close the book with Jay & Silent Bob starring in there last movie... excluding animation and Jason Mewes ever quitting drugs. ...Some very funny moments. My favorite? Probably has to be GOOD WILL HUNTING 2: Hunting Season! Brilliant!

...There was so much hype of this film I didn't think I'd like it and say it wasn't THAT good but I can honestly say it was! It left with that feeling of numbness that only a great movie can leave you with! (If you follow!) ...Jake Gyllenhaal is probably the best indie/cult actor around at the moment and I am more than sure when he makes the full time change to main stream cinema he will be massive! Same comment applies for Maggie Gyllenhaal. ...The cast is solid along with the script and the feature length debut direction of Richard Kelly is probably/hopefully going to be up there with the great debuts. ...the best film of the 00's thus far

Phone Booth

Warning: Spoilers
...Oh how I waited for this movie! I found out this film was being made back in 2001 and loved the concept. It was to my happiness pretty much exactly how I thought the makers of Phone Booth would do it! ...Without giving away spoilers there's not much you can say! Colin Farrell, a sleazy "up-himself" PR, has an enemy and he doesn't know until he answers THAT phone call!!! ...The one negative for me was the damn prostitutes... OH HOW THEY ANNOYED ME! ...If you didn't see it at the cinema don't worry because I think this movie can be really enjoyed in comfort of your own home!

7.5/10 ...Oh and don't be put off by the length of the film it feels much longer watching it and if it was any longer the film would have been awful!

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
5 May 2003
...This movie is far more superior than The Fellowship of the Ring. Probably as the book offered more action than the first!. ...In my opinion there was only one segment which I really didn't like and that was any scene involving Liv Tyler and Hugo Weaving... this has nothing to do with there acting ability but the scenes simply bored me! But never mind! Oh and Andy Serkis was good but DID NOT deserve an academy award and the stuff not in the book the film makers added were pointless! ... I love this film but I am not going to lie and say this film was flawless! ... Mortensen, Bloom & Davies are the best things about this movie. The trio certainly bring the characters to life on the screen... and I cannot put down in words how good the Helms Deep battle sequence was at the end!

...I did enjoy this film but looking back now I feel it was some what disappointing. ...the special effects are great but the major flaw in this film I think is the script, it didn't quite excite as much as it should have. ...The casting was correct in my view, they all did a good job with what they had. ...Luckily the sheer popularity on Comic Book films has helped this film get a follow up and what a follow up it was!

...God yes it's a great film but I've watched it a good few times now and I really can't help but feel it's amazingly over rated. ...I find too many scenes in this film too dreary and to be blunt boring to make this one of the finest films in the history of cinema. ...It's opening scenes are fantastic, the that set the pace for the rest of the trilogy never mind the Fellowships itself! ...I think it laid very good foundations for The Two Towers, which in my opinion was so much better!!! ...I have read the books (before the films were out may I add!), and I prefer the book on this occasion!

Dogma (1999)
Dogma
5 May 2003
...I really really enjoyed Dogma. It's one of the best buddy/road movie comedies of the last few years or so. ...Dogma got much critism when made because of all the religous mumbo-jumbo, who cares? Some people need to chill out and listen to what Kevin Smith says about why he wrote DOGMA. ...The cast

Linda Fiorentino (Men in Black) Ben Affleck (Chasing Amy) Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting) Salma Hayek (Frida) Jason Lee (Dreamcatcher) Jason Mewes (Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back) Alan Rickman (Die Hard) Chris Rock (Lethal Weapon 4) ...is strong and impressive as is Smith's script which stands to reason at the end of the day! ...If you've not seen Dogma then please don't be put off by anything religous mentioned! It's a great film!

Chasing Amy (1997)
Chasing Amy
5 May 2003
...After the flop that was Mallrats, Kevin Smith's career must have been up in the air... He was given a low budget to make Chasing Amy and he delivered the goods in epic style! ...Chasing Amy begins as a full out comedy with (sir) Jason Lee delivering the usual brilliance. ...But as the movie progresses Ben Affleck's main character Holden comes to shine as his life changes. ...The saddest thing to come out of this production was that Kevin Smith wasn't nominated for BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY at the Academy Awards in 1998... It deserved it a nomination at the very least! Shame it didn't though.

As I've been quoted on this site....

"The fanboys tend to ruin Kevin Smith though... many cannot admit his flaws, even Smith himself will admit to his flaws." ...This was panned by the critics and if you were to weight up everything you should agree. ...Frankly the best thing to come out of this film was (sir) Jason Lee, who was brilliant in executing his role. It was also nice to see a before he was famous Ben Affleck. ...BUT lets be honest..... ...Jason London was absolutely awful! He sounds like he's reading from an autocue! ...Claire Forlani was poor as was Shannen Doherty in executing her lines too.

This was no Clerks or Chasing Amy or Dogma but it's still watchable all the same thanks to the great Jason Lee... Maybe if there wasn't so much budget involved this could have been better? Jersey Girl is his biggest budget since (mainly thanks to Affleck's wages) lets hope Kevin Smith makes his $£$£$£$ back for Miramax so he can go onto the Fletch film trouble free!!!

...Give a dog a bone! This sure is among the best comedies of the 1990's. Yes, Yes the dialogue is rude through out but this is a film about Generation X young adults... LIKE THEY WON'T SWEAR!!! ...Smith's major quality is his ability to write fantastic slick dialogue. His characters are brilliant and they deserved to last through four more films! Jay and Silent Bob we salute you! ...The fanboys tend to ruin Kevin Smith though... many cannot admit his flaws, even Smith himself will admit to his flaws. ...Clerks is one of my favourite comedies of all time... This suprises even me as I can't relate to these characters to my personal life (well barely anyway).
