Boy Swallows Universe (2024)
Slow and boring
Was excited to start this so I started watching but just couldn't get into the story at all. Got to episode two and wasn't paying attention anymore so I had to stop watching all together. I was way too bored.
Yes the acting of the kid in the main character Eli is good but the dialogue and the character of Eli himself are boring and cringy. Not interesting. I didn't get invested nor did I want to get invested in their story. What even was the story about??!
The episodes are too long, being fifty-seven minutes each, so that's not encouraging. Yeah, no, I don't recommend it at all, now I'm just filling words.
Heartbreak High (2022)
Boring and predictable season 2
It's cute, it was cute at first. But then they had to make a season 2. Amerie is really not a likeable character, she's super selfish and a brat, with zero logic to her actions. She does whatever whenever and lands everyone around her in trouble, every single time! The characters around her are also kinda stupid and shallow... Were we like this when we were teenagers!? I sure Hope not!! There's a lot of sexual fluidity: boy loves boy loves girl loves boy loves boy who loves boys and girls who love girls and then boys. Teenagers discovering their identities. But the story is boring in that second season. Save your time, skip it.
Gerry (2011)
Ok movie with a horrible fake accent!
I am not a fan of Gerry Boulet, I am not a fan of Offenbach either, but the songs are famous and everyone here (in Quebec) knows them. I watched the movie to get more familiar with the iconic man and group. Did not learn much about either.
What disappointed me the most and was not only a turn off, but an irritable, is the bad québécois accent that the lead, St-Amand, takes, even though he is Québécois himself. I had to go watch interviews of Gerry on YouTube to see if he really spoke like that and nope! St-Amand fails at nailing the spoken voice and accent of the singer, making it ridiculously emphasized (Françoèwize instead of Françwawz). He could've just spoken like his normal québécois!
Mafia Inc (2019)
Long and boring
This movie, Mafia inc, which is all over the place is really boring and too long for the story it's trying to tell.
A mixture of Romeo and Juliette mixed with The Godfather minus the good story and drama!
Set in Montreal, the Paternos are the Italian family who run the Montreal mafia and deal with drug and big money. They take in Vincent, the son of tailor Gamache, who has been kicked out by his family. Tailor Gamache (Vince's father) has been crafting suits for the Paternos for three generations and Sophie, Vince's sister in engaged to the Paternos son. That's about all the story there is to this movie. Ok acting, lots of gratuitous violence, especially in the opening scenes.
Don't bother.
Beef (2023)
Very not funny !
The trailer for this 10-episode mini series looked promising, even if it sounded bizarre, but that's why I was intrigued. I was expecting a funny comedy with an Asian point of view but all I got was a down-spiralling depressing one-tone not funny tale of (rich) women being brats and (poor) guys making stupid decisions.
Many characters are unlikable, if not all! The 2 leads are just irrational. The husband is a mama's boy, the daughter is a spoiled devil, the artsy blondie is despicable, the cousin is plain stupid. Only potentially interesting character was the younger Cho brother but his storyline quickly went south.
Nothing hopeful here, not a series to watch if you want to lift your spirits or have a laugh. Avoid.
È stata la mano di Dio (2021)
Boring
I don't know what story this film is supposed to tell but it was way too long, way too slow and way too boring. Definitely for a niche audience who gets the references of this Italian movie, but absolutely not for a larger audience...
Acting is ok but not enough to add value to the film. Some scenery is cute but again, not enough to add anything to the film. It's basically just a bunch of pictures put together. Reminds of when parents used to film their life and children, before the internet existed, on cassettes. And years later, you watch it and all you see are moments of someone's life, with no context, no story, no beginning, no end.
Save yourself the time and skip this one!
Blonde (2022)
Boring and dark
Very long and boring and monotone movie. Ana de Arma does a good job at portraying Marilyn Monroe/Norma Jean but the scenario and the dialogues are so bad and so theatrical, like made for a play, not for a movie!!
Most of the facts in the movie are not true, most of fictional so the movie gives an image of the movie icon that is not truthful. And it's not interesting nor entertaining!! There's nudity, violence, rape followed by the baby voice of Marilyn/Norma and her calling her husbands "Daddy", which makes everything uncomfortable!!
The movie goes from colors to black and white with no apparent or clear intention, super confusing!! Don't waste your time watching this.
Time Out (2019)
Cute little rom com
Very well made, good actors, funny moments and nice simple story.
Yara, a single woman, who works as a professional DJ and lives mostly at night, has a hard time with her floor neighbour Rabih, a History professor who's very square and serious and lives alone with his teenage girl. Those two couldn't be any more opposites and love doesn't seem to be on their priority list. But an accident will force them to get along, which will create several funny moments...
I watched this on Valentines Day, and it was a pretty good entertainment. The acting is just enough campy, and just enough serious to be credible.
Cobalt Blue (2022)
Long and boring
Very very slow story with dramatic music all throughout the movie. The main character is supposed to be a teenager but looks like he's in his twenties. Same for his sister! The fact that they're teenage students having these love and sexual affairs makes it even weirder! Especially that the main character, Tanay, have an affair with... his teacher/professor.
The « paying guest » is strange and mysterious but fails to be lovable.
The timeline is unclear, the passing of time is not shown in any way but we're meant to understand that many weeks/months have passed. And then the ending is so anti-climactic! Don't waste your time.
Smiley (2022)
Cute but...
... Lots of talking, predictable and somewhat cheesy.
The concept, idea, and story are interesting but there's a lot of dialogue and it's hard to connect to the characters.
Very little is told about their back stories.
Good ideas with the editing, but sometimes it makes the series more on the kitch side...
The main character Alex is portrayed as a loving romantic smart young man but at the same time, a very shallow guy, who fits all the homosexual stereotypes and with little substance or intelligence, he has nothing to hold a conversation...
Could have been way better, but it's still a good series!
Aline (2020)
So bad it's insulting!
Valérie Lemercier on a major power trip to live the life of Céline Dion. It's ridiculous, not even funny, not accurate, so it fails to be a comedy and it certainly is not a biopic. Just a French woman wanting to live a dream life (by playing Celine on the big screen) and by doing that, only manages to make bad jokes about the Quebecois people, and their accent. Insulting at most. Ridiculous at best. Weird directorial choices, bad impersonating, bad lip syncing to the songs, bad storyline. No real depth to any of the characters. Don't waste your time. Wait for a real biopic or pick another French comedy.
Lel Maout (2021)
Slow and depressing
The storyline is good. But because it's a Ramadan show (it needs to last for the 30 days of Ramadan), the pace is slow and the story is stretched to the max. All the actors speak in a soft manner all the time, which makes you want to fall asleep. Too melodramatic!! Violins throughout the 30ish hours of it!!
There's A LOT of smoking, all the time. It's disgusting how much every character smokes. And it's not particularly useful for the story of the characters identities. Mix of Lebanese and Syrian accent, which just makes it weird. Anyone watching this thinking this is a realistic depiction of Lebanese society, it's not! Maybe 60% accurate, not more.
Good aspects: 2 strong leading female roles and some minor female roles that are strong too. The visuals are beautiful and the camera angles are well thought. The colour themes and the decors are stunning.
Tung lau hap woo (2015)
Cute & Bad
Very bad acting and even worse editing. Very slow pace with a lot of gratuitous nudity, nice athletic bodies of young Asian men but otherwise nothing much to see here. Tackles the philosophical questions surrounding homosexuality and religion, monogamy, bisexuality... but all very superficially. Had a lot of potential but lacks to generate any sense of feeling or attachment to the characters, which are super under-developed. The girlfriend is almost a caricature, the "Sister" seems to come from another film, and the 2 main men develop a love relationship is less than a minute... If you are extremely romantic & you enjoy Asian nudity, you MIGHT like this movie.
Heaven Without People (2017)
Interesting directing but somewhat boring
This is a thriller. An incident happens and we want to know the truth.
Except this happens only in the second part of the movie. The first part is only talk talk talk. We feel like a fly on the wall listening to a family dinner.
The way the movie is directed is interested, in the sense that it looks like it is shot in one take, or that the actors are 100% improvising. Which is probably not the case so thumbs up to the actors for the amazing job in conveying realness (even the babies)! But I felt that Rita (Farah Shaer) was always trying to steal the spotlight, she's the only one who felt overdone as if she's trying to push the plot forward. At the end, it became aggressive and way too much. One character (Elias) even says "stop repeating the same sentences"!!
The intrigue is revealed in 2 seconds in the last minute of the film and nothing else is quite addressed...
Diana (2021)
Very entertaining & realistic
I was not expecting much but I truly enjoyed it! The clever changes of costumes, the details told in little words to try and fit as much story as possible... we go through Diana's marriage from the first meeting with Charles to the divorce and the Paris accident. The Charles-Camilla relationship take a lot of space but is useful to understand Diana's suffering in her marriage.
Actors, even if they don't resemble the real royals 100%, do a wonderful job of portraying them, so they're credible.
If you liked the Crown, you might like this.
Shei xian ai shang ta de (2018)
Just yelling and bad acting
The theme is interesting and very often exploited but that's about it. The characters are not likable, the pace is slow and there's way too much yelling. Bad.
Other People (2016)
Boring and slow
Started watching and lost interest very fast. Even though I really enjoy gay movies, it was not enough to save this one. The plot is slow and tells nothing much. Basically just the day to day drama of the months leading to the mother's death. Half way through, I was playing a game on my phone while listening to the movie in the background... Some ideas could have been pushed deeper like the son-father relationship, or how the son is dealing with the situation or even the sister. But everything just stays on the surface and it ends up being nothing more than a journal ... Dont waste your time.
The Time Traveler's Wife (2009)
Cute but confusing
Cute story, kind of original. But the way it is put together is so confusing. The guy keep going back and forth in time but can't control it, yet he is able to have a « normal » life with a wife who waits for him all her life... Feels like a TV movie of second degree.
Creed (2015)
Boring. So boring.
Slept through it all. It's full of dialogues. Just talk talk talk... nothing original or unpredictable. Long and boring.
