Dancing with the Stars (2005)
Fun
All right, so Dancing with the Stars is what it is. It's a entertaining show for people who like music and or dance. For me, over the past 12 years, it has become something of a tradition for me and my family to watch.
Every season is different, and every season there are those who complain about the season's cast not being "stars." However, anyone who has watched this show knows that the term "star" is used subjectively- you are not going to find current major movie stars doing this show, although you may find a former A-lister doing the show. That is just the nature of this show.
There are always dancers on the show who have more dance experience than others, and it is never going to be a completely even playing field. But for me, and countless other viewers, that is what makes this show what it has become over the years!
So, watch and enjoy it!
I Married a Witch (1942)
Veronica's Movie All the Way
I have to say, I really enjoyed this film. Veronica Lake is funny and charming in a role that really showcases her skills as a comedienne- in my opinion, it's a shame she didn't get the chance to do more comedies, since film noir seems to be what she is best remembered for today.
Frederic March, although I like him as an actor in other films, is somewhat miscast here. He simply seems too old for the part of Veronica's love interest. However, I suppose it doesn't really matter who played Wally in the film- make no mistake about it, this is Veronica Lake's film, all the way. She's the driving force behind the film, March is just along for the ride.
The supporting cast is also great, especially Susan Hayward who is quite good as "the shrew." I also enjoyed seeing Elizabeth Patterson, Mrs. Trumball on "I Love Lucy", as March's long- suffering maid.
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Flynn and de Havilland- best pairing ever!
This film is one of my all-time favorites. When my grandparents were dating in the late 1930s- early 1940s, they saw several of Flynn's films in theaters. This is one they spoke most fondly about seeing. As a result, I have seen it many times.
Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland simply have some of the best screen chemistry ever. Robin Hood is definitely the role Errol Flynn was born to play, and here he is at his most handsome, athletic, and charming. Additionally, the supporting cast is just superb. Claude Rains manages to come off as both charming and diabolical at the same time, and Basil Rathbone is also great as Sir Guy. A must-see, especially for members of my family!
The Black Swan (1942)
Interesting
Interesting film. I admit, I've been on a bit of a classic movie kick recently, having seen several films on TCM which were either nominated for or won Academy Awards. This was one that was featured, having won for best cinematography.
It's an interesting, fun film, just pure entertainment. Maureen O'Hara is stunning, and her character is quite interesting- she's headstrong and quite stubborn, especially for a woman of the time period which the film takes place. She and Power, in my opinion, don't have great chemistry in my opinion but they are still interesting to watch.
George Sanders was completely unrecognizable in this role as well- never would have know that was him!
It's kind of sad to watch this movie today, knowing that two of its main stars (Cregar and Power) died so young and far too soon!
