Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
Some people are never happy
You have to wonder what possesses people to rate this episode anything under an 8. The danger with TV shows is that they very rarely meet peoples expectations and that is clearly what is happening here. This episode being marked lower than some of the worst tv shows and films in history, which absolutely incredible considering how spectacular it was.
We can argue all day about cliches and how the night king was killed off, but visually this episode was incredible. Dark? yes, but what else would you expect in the midst of a white walker invasion.
I think some people think the budget was £100m with their silly expectations and adventurous plot ideas. Game of Thrones has always been about the Game of Thrones and the night king has been a side plot all along. He did go out in a bit of a whimper, but so what, he was always going to die and it was a shock to me anyway when it came.
Haters want to hate and some people just want to play devils advocate with everything. I think the most avid fans will be rating this anywhere between 8 and 10 and that is very much deserved. A fantastic conclusion to the coming of winter and we shall wait with anticipated breath for what the next 3 episodes hold. I can't see how i will be left disappointed.
Game of Thrones: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (2019)
Some fans just don't get it
From what I have read, there a are a lot of fans who just don't get what Game of Thrones is all about.
They wanted season 6 to start with blood, fire, ice and fury, without the story ever needing to be developed. If the writers had started the season with everyone showing up at Winterfell in 5 minutes and then continued with 6 episodes of utter bloodshed, we would be accusing them of rushing it. Instead what we have is the last hoorah for some characters, giving us a sense of the fear and trepidation each one is facing, before we say goodbye to them. These episodes are not only necessary, but they are written and delivered in typical GOT fashion.
My guess is that these next few episodes will change television history forever, setting the bar very high. We will all come to appreciate the build up to battle of Winterfell and when we come to binge watch it all again, it will all seem seamlessly perfect. It is the wait for each week that is the killer and we all want it now, but when has GOT ever done that ? The red wedding plot seem to go on forever when I think back, but when it came it was outstanding.
Rating these episodes anything lower than a 8 or 9 appears to be from those people who are too impatient or are expecting GOT to live above their own expectations. I for one think they have been close to perfect and I would be seriously annoyed if I had watched a character develop for 7 seasons, just to watch them die in first five minutes of season 8 with no real back story to why they were in Winterfell. Patience is a virtue.
9/10
Earth: The Power of the Planet (2007)
Simply Stunning
In my view Dr Iain Stewart is greatly under estimated. He has a wonderful persona and in this particular series comes across as good as Attenborough.
Earth: Power of the planet is quite possibly one of the greatest TV series I have ever seen. It takes us on a journey through the complex development of our planet, all the way from its explosive birth to the present time. It is exciting, yet sobering at times and explains everything on a level anyone can understand. Each of the 5 episodes gripped me from start to finish and I never get bored of watching them over and over.
Its the kind of series that proves how lucky mankind are to even be in existence and that as complex the procedures it took to get us here, nature has the power to quickly take it away in a blink of an eye.
10/10 for me!
