Oppenheimer (I) (2023)
4/10
Painfully Pompous.
28 April 2024
This movie was tedious and overly long for no apparent reason. The jarring, nonlinear storytelling served no purpose here.

I found myself wishing for an editor: I checked to see how much longer, and was stunned to see I was only halfway through the movie. At that point, I considered giving up, but decided to stick it out, just to get through it once.

There was nothing in this film that I could not have learned if this had been edited to one hour.

The acting was technically good, but no one was brilliant. The writing was shallow, compared to the storytelling that the music would have you believe was happening (but was not). The music came across as bombastic, overblown and self-important. Perhaps Nolan thought the swelling music would transform it into a good film? It did not.

Loved it!! Loads of cornball fun
22 December 2023
I give it 10 out of 10 stars for what it is, which is a spinoff of a well-known reality TV show! If you are looking for something silly, corny, that doesn't take itself too seriously, and if you are a Big Brother fan, I recommend giving it a try.

I loved that the challenges were created for both men and women in mind. I appreciate that the producers figured out ways to make the games competitive for everyone to participate in, not just people who excel in sports.

I hope the producers will consider adding these types of challenges to the regular Big Brother season.

Cast: 10/10 Everyone's Christmas Costumes: 10/10 Challenges: 10/10

It's not a super deep show with a lot of strategy, although it does have a bit. Expect it to be corny and fluff. If you like that sort of thing, enjoy! If you don't, give it a miss.

Mixed feelings
24 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The problem with this documentary is that it is heavily biased toward the Canadian team. Tara Lipinski, Scott Hamilton, and many of the announcers that are featured were highly favoring the Canadian team to win and had convinced themselves they had won, even though they had NOT YET EVEN HEARD what the judges had to say. It was obvious during the commentary after the Canadian pair skated that the western media commentators felt like the Canadians had won Olympic gold, even though the judges had not even weighed in yet!

I am an American, and watching the two performances, I would have personally voted for the Russians, because I greatly prefer that tradition of skating that emphasizes ballet. I personally also do not like most singles Olympic skaters in the United States and Canada because they focus on athletics, not ballet and dance tradition the way the Russian skaters do. I prefer Victor Plushenko to any American singles skater, as an example.

Because the 2002 Olympics was held in Utah, there was obviously a bias in the western audience for the Canadian pair. I guarantee you if this had been held in Russia or another country such as China, the audience would have heavily favored the Russian team. So it really is not a surprise at all, not in the least, that the audience was loudly cheering for the Canadians! It is what anyone would expect from an audience in the United States.

That is why, even before knowing about the supposed "scandal," I found the comments from the Canadian skaters and from the western news media personalities to be disingenuous at best.

Obviously, Canada or the United States would want one of their pairs to beat the Russian team. A tale as old as time. Back when the Olympics scoring system was 6.0, it was common to have politics involved in decisions in judging. It may still be for all I know, even though they changed the system.

I believe it was a mistake to award the Canadians with a second gold medal. I personally believe the Russians won their gold medal.

I did not find Tara Lipinski's documentary especially compelling nor neutral. For that reason I rate it five stars at best.

Space Force (2020–2022)

A cult classic-to-be
2 March 2023
I predict this will one day be a cult classic. It requires patience; I did not appreciate the show in the same way when I first started watching it as I now do. It's a slow burn. Then, one episode after another as the characters build, it gets funnier and funnier. I am now on season two episode three "The Chinese Delegation" and it is hilarious. I often laugh out loud, literally.

I saw an article in the Military Times suggesting the public would not take the real Space Force seriously because of this show. I don't believe that is the case. People understand satire and humor; at least I hope they still do in this modern world.

Clarkson's Farm (2021– )
1/10
A Train Wreck in Slow Motion
19 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Here's a man that just can't leave nature alone. He rescues an owl that later dies as he posted on his Instagram. When he should have left the owl on the forest floor for its parents to feed (this is normal owl behavior for baby owls). He digs out the wetlands area, but doesn't get a scientific study nor plan from a wetlands surveyor or environmental consultant, who could have determined how to do what he wanted to do properly; instead we have Jeremy crashing about in the woods, digging holes and destroying habitat.

Jeremy, a one-man exercise in destruction, has no self-discipline, and no desire to truly help wildlife or nature. He seems to want to destroy things, to build things where they don't belong. He builds a farm store in the middle of idyllic pastoral farmland, and brings so many tourists gawking to see him that he destroys the nature of the very land and village, that he supposedly loves. He has no respect for traditional values of actual farmers.

If you are watching this and thinking, this is what I need to do to become a real farmer, no, it is not. In one one hair-raising, heart-attack-inducing episode after the other, Jeremy continues to destroy his farm habitat by behaving like a stupid human. Avoid this garbage show that pretends to be about farming, but in reality is about watching one man both self sabotage and ruin a small, previously idyllic community.

Is It Cake? (2022– )

Mikey Day
20 January 2023
Mikey Day renders what otherwise would be a decent show unwatchable.

I can only hope Netflix will replace him as host. The show moves painfully slowly thanks to his inane banter.

Mikey Day is okay (not great, but tolerable) on Saturday Night Live, but on "Is It Cake?" his bad renditions of Jim Carrey circa "Ace Ventura" days grow old quickly. (No insult meant to Jim Carrey; I'm a Jim Carrey fan!)

My hope is maybe he only signed a one-year contract and the producers at Netflix will smack themselves in their collective foreheads and realize he is the reason for the show's lagging popularity.

It is a great concept for a food show, and interesting to see how realistic cakes are made, but I will pass on the remaining episodes unless they replace the host.

Jerky video/film style
24 June 2022
I love William Shatner. But if you are motion sensitive as I am, the filmmakers use a filming technique here that is jerky. I simply couldn't watch it. Wish it was filmed using a normal technique.

Vinland map references?
3 April 2022
I'm not an archaeologist, nor an expert, but this show lost a lot of its appeal when they kept referring to the Vinland map, which has been proven a hoax.

Depressing holiday movie
24 December 2019
Excellent cast, and decent story. But it is a very depressing holiday movie and it will not lift your spirits. I really wish I had not watched this one because it was a downer.

I Feel Bad (2018)

Watched it after reading the reviews
18 October 2018
I wasn't going to watch this after reading the reviews. I am glad I gave it a chance. I watched the first episode not expecting much. The show has a lot of funny moments and some good casting. It grew on me during the first four episodes.

I rate it a 7 for now with the potential to hit 8 or higher as the characters develop.

My advice is watch it for yourself and make your own decision on whether this style of comedy is for you. I like the writing style and the parents, especially the mother, are hilarious. I had some random laugh out loud moments. I plan to keep watching.

The Walking Dead (2010–2022)

AMC ruins everything
2 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
At one point this show was a solid 10 for me, until AMC ruined it with the help of some other contributors. The episode with the baseball bat deaths was the last time I watched. The show started going downhill long before that.

Too bad AMC has to ruin everything it touches and milk shows for money instead of having fewer seasons and a great ending with its mostly stellar cast. But they chose to let the show die a slow death, losing fans and cast members along the way.

I came back on here after many years realizing I had left my rating as a 10. Changing to a 1 to reflect what a disaster the show has become.

Pile of dog poop
16 January 2017
Mad Max and Road Warrior were great movies.

Mad Max Fury Road is a pile of dog excrement.

In addition to what the other reviewers who hated it said, it relied too heavily on CGI, had a scattered, poorly written ... dare I call it a "plot"? because it really wasn't -- and we had no reason to care about ANY of these characters. It was a mess from the moment it started until it thankfully ended.

If this had been the original Mad Max, no one in Hollywood would have EVER made a single sequel of this horrific mess.

Sad that this is what passes for a "good" movie these days.

Predictable and tedious
14 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
*spoilers*

Great actors wasted in this predictable tale. Bad guy Hugh Laurie easily taken in by an undercover agent who then turns on him.

The worst part of the entire production for me was wanting to wipe Tom Hiddleston's heavily applied makeup off his face. His facial skin tone did not match the skin tone on his neck or ears. Once you notice this you won't be able to unsee it.

The scenery is well done but left me cold as the story was so unbelievably dull.

Skip it unless you are totally bored or easily entertained by vapid plot lines and a glitsy jetsetter backdrop. There is nothing new here.

Super 8 (2011)

Illogical premise means the realization it wasn't worth watching
11 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
***** REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS *****

DO NOT READ BELOW IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEE SPOILERS

I had a big problem with the premise of the movie.

The alien just wanted us to give it its square "blocks" so it could build its ship and return to its home in outer space.

Without that, there would not have been all of this violence on Earth.

Neither would there have been a movie premise or a reason for me to waste two hours of my life watching this ridiculous movie.

In other words, if the military had done the reasonable thing and safe thing -- give the alien back its ship so it could stop the violence on Earth -- there wouldn't have been any premise for a movie.

Thus -- stupid movie, stupid premise, stupid waste of two hours of my life.

Who cares if the kids were cute and they were making a movie? J.J. Abrams bases it on a very flawed premise, then he stretches it out much longer than he should ever stretch such a thin plot, and thus he end up with a boring, disappointing movie.

It has creep factor, and great special effects, I'll give it that. Too bad he didn't do a better job with the basic premise and the plot.

Hidalgo (2004)

Enjoy the Ride!
10 March 2005
An excellent, epic tale. This is not a fast-paced film; rather, think of it as story unfolding before your eyes, so sit back and enjoy the ride. There's plenty of adventure along the way, and I shed a few tears as well. It is a moving narrative.

Viggo Mortensen plays the lead character, Frank T. Hopkins, with aplomb, humor, humility, and spunk. Hidalgo, his painted mustang, plays his part well, also! Hopkins is a cowboy/Pony Express rider with a heritage that he holds to himself and is revealed in time. Especially heart-wrenching is the Battle of Wounded Knee. More massacre than battle, it had a profound and personal impact on Hopkins' life.

In the legendary 3,000-mile Ocean of Fire race across the sands of the Arabian desert, Hopkins and his horse must face treachery and the cruel desert elements in an endurance race that pushes man and beast to their limits. If you like horses, adventure, and epic films, this is a movie for you.

Expect moments of triumph and humor that make you laugh and cheer, as well as moments of tragedy. It is a story beautifully told and carefully crafted, though not without mistakes.

A few scenes could have been edited to preserve the epic feel while maintaining the film's pace. At certain points it was natural for the film to slow down, but it should not have been allowed to slow down to the point of stalling. However, in defense of the filmmakers, they were successful in capturing the tedium, beauty and peril of crossing a desert in a 3,000-mile race, and it gave viewers a real feeling for what it might be like to make such a journey.

The relationship Frank T. Hopkins has with his horse in this movie is especially touching, and is perhaps the highlight of the film.

Supporting roles by the rest of the cast were outstanding. Omar Sharif was amazing as always. Even the smallest actors shone in their parts.

Mr. Mortensen's diverse talents, including his aptitude for learning languages (Lakota/Sioux in this case), his own horseback riding skills, and his versatility as an actor made him a perfect fit for this part. Mr. Mortensen's book, Miyelo, which sprang from this movie, is a fine choice for anyone who wants to see a sampling of Mr. Mortensen's outstanding photography.

Frank T. Hopkins remained a staunch advocate of the wild Mustang horse until his death. Keep in mind that the real Frank T. Hopkins was known for his weaving of tall tales; thus, the "legendary" Ocean of Fire race.

A highly recommended movie.
