Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
John Connor? You've been cancelled.
Was this pile of garbage made by ultra-liberal progressists with tax payer money? Yes it was. Why T6 is so bad:
1/ John Connor has been cancelled, so long suckers. Here go T1 and T2 down the garbage bin. Thank you for your loyalty and support.
2/ Women are Heroes. No one is denying that. This is why Helen Ripley stars in Alien and Sarah Connor in Terminator since the 70-80s. Where do the express need to cancel the two biggest male characters of the franchise come from? What asleep ideology could have possibly trigger this? In a franchise that is clearly watched by males. Who could possibly have interest in claiming this territory? Ok fine, from now on please stop sending young men to war, draft only our female progressists. We know they can do it. How about Ukraine? Any ultra-liberal neo-feminist heroes ready to battle?
3/ The new John Connor is a Mexican female Hero. Again, nothing wrong with that if it was not a replacement of the main character everybody loves and recognize. I would not go as far as saying this is a poisoned chalice to the whole Mexican community but considering how the "progressists" dealt with Mexican migrants in their precious Martha's Vineyards... enough said.
Swiss Army Man (2016)
Forgettable like a fart
Unlike what many of the positive critics have already said about Swiss Army Man, I found it quite pretentious that the movie even tried to venture into a pseudo philosophical study on life when in reality it multiplies the running fart gag to infinity. If you think Adam Sandler sense of humour was pathetically childish and repetitive, you are going to have a blast with this one. Or not. Whether you consider this film to be a comedy or an existential comedy drama (which it tries and fails to be quite miserably), the type of humour is so idiotic and uninspiring it will leave you with one regret which is to have given this overrated turd a chance. The subject of life and death deserves a better treatment and clearly the filmmaker behind Swiss Army Man did not know what direction to give his movie so he simply opted to give up and indulged into the crass level. My word is: don't believe the hype around it. This movie has no subtlety at all, it is not moving, the monologues are utterly clueless, the characters depth has not been explored because there is nothing to explore. I still don't see how so many viewers can see it as a light-hearted lesson about life and society when it is everything but. It is a running gag and the joke is on you. Idiocracy (2006) was not a great comedy by any stretch of imagination but it was unpretentious. In comparison, Swiss Army Man is the definition of idiocracy. Farts can only take you so far.
Wild Target (2010)
British really?
Reading through all the previous reviews I was puzzled somehow to discover that a remake from a nonetheless excellent French movie (Cible Emouvante - 1993) can be described as British when the best way to describe it is French farce.
Do not get me wrong the remake is very satisfying but the original is far better. I am not entirely convinced with the chemistry between the three (well, four if you count the mother) main protagonists and the whole script has been left untouched. Nothing was added to the original, a few goodies have actually been left out.
As the assassin, Jean Rochefort deadbeat persona and typical French flair for comedy is hard to beat. Bill Nighy made a decent job of reprising the role of Victor Maynard in a more British sort of way obviously. The let down comes mostly from his companions, as the three never found the most wanted chemistry.
The trio of Rochefort-Depardieu-Trintignan progressed through the original movie to the point where they appeared almost like a family at the end. I did not feel as much empathy for the British trio who felt to me like three actors giving each other the replica as opposed to three characters trying to make the best out of an awkward situation. There is a form of kindness in the original that I could not find in the remake.
Otherwise most of the situations and jokes found in the original are there, so if you loved 'Cible Emouvante' as much as I did, you will probably be slightly amused with this remake.
In a nutshell, 'Wild Target' follows a long line of translated French comedies a la Jacques Weber but without the quirky French acting which is a big part of what made the original movie work so well. I would definitely recommend the original if you can find it on DVD.
Lars and the Real Girl (2007)
Remake of French movie "Monique" (2002)
I gave it 5 out of 10 because while it claimed to be original, this movie is clearly a copy of the brilliant 2002 French movie titled "Monique". If you are a little bit childish and like simplicity "Lars and the Real Girl" will suit you perfectly, if you like a bit of depth of characters and want to have a good time while engaging your reflexion on the subject of marriage, then the original title "Monique" is a far better choice. In spite of its lower rating on IMDb (probably due its lack of notoriety and distribution outside France), I rate the French original higher due to the fact that it is aimed at a grown-up audience.
