La battaglia di Algeri (1966)
"Battle Algiers"
The Battle Algiers is a very influential movie because it dealt with issues that the nation face and it is true even to this day. The film explores historical events that take place during the Algiers Battle. Not only does it relate to the United States but relates to those Nations that fight for their freedom.
Author from IMDb: dankagvoic from United States comments "This movie was made in 1967, over 30 years before 9/11. When 9/11 happened, I thought who in this world does that? Who kill(s) innocent civilians in the middle of the day by crashing the plane into the building?" I completely agree with his comment; when 9/11 occurred I was in middle school and it didn't make sense to me how people could: first of all, kill themselves and kill innocent people. But after watching this movie I got a sense of what it all meant. It was not just people being suicidal but had an utterly deeper meaning. A meaning that goes beyond hate but focuses on the pain. Overall I found this film provocative and worth watching.
Once Were Warriors (1994)
Such a heartbreaking story
"Once were warriors" directed by Lee Tamahori, is such a great and powerful film. It's not my taste in film because of the brutality towards women and abuse but it's a story about a families real life. Its based on the New Zealand modern style of living dealing with a time after the colonization by England. Violence, drug use, lack of love, poverty, abuse and other mishaps. Tamahori does an amazing job expressing and showing what reality is about, not every family has this story but behind close doors violence is hidden. This film has a power to make you cry with the characters, smile, laugh, and even hate wishing life wasn't so hard. This is such a memorable film although its heartbreaking is unforgettable. Amazing acting from beginning to end brilliant story.
White Dog (1982)
"White Dog"
Samuel Fuller directs this film to reflect racism through a dog's perspective. Not at all is the film racist, on the contrary Fuller's main objective is to communicate a point across during that era. I think that this film portrays what was and is still occurring. The movie is not about "ohh look how cute is that dog". it's about a dog that has been mislead and taught to do the wrong thing. The white dog has been taught to attack black people. As a puppy the dog learned that because he had a bad experience with black person every other black person was the same. However, he was just poisoned by the very owner that had a hate for black people. Julie Sawyer one of the main actresses confronts the dog's ex- owner and speaks out her mind about how he had done such a hard to the dog. Racist people that spoil the rest of the bunch should be put a stop to because categorizing people according to their skin color isn't fair. This movie raises suspense but at times the music is too over the top, overall this film contains a greater meaning.
Los olvidados (1950)
"Los olvidados"- by Luis Buñuel
"Los olvidados" directed by Luis Buñuel is a compelling film which emphases on the troubled youth in Mexico. It's a realistic film that does not focus on the "happy ending" but the truth in the lives of those whom lack education. Its' surrealist quality may be too complex for those whom love happy endings with simple solutions. Buñuel original version of "Los Olvidados" is a powerful and satisfying message hands down. His focus is not to beat down Mexico and its poverty state but to explore and inform those whom aren't aware of the condition. Sociologically speaking Buñuel tried to explain how poverty isn't the main issues; it goes beyond pointing out the obvious answers. Not only poverty contributes to the lack of schooling systems but the lack of parenting is what makes the society go out of control. Through each of the protagonist in the film he explains or focuses on their different stages. For example, Pedro, young child, goes through a difficult life not just because of poverty but because of the wrong influences. He doesn't receive love from his mom and thrown into the streets as a lonely dog. Hibo with his reckless behavior beaten down by life drags younger kids to his malicious lifestyle. Every character has a complex quality and they all reflect different types of neglect or those kids that live in Mexico. I was born in Mexico and I thank God because I was brought to the United States as a young girl. And I know for a fact that life in Mexico is difficult because of its corruption and poverty. Sure...It all depends how one chooses to live life but how does one live in richness when education is scarce poverty is rising and there is a lack of parenting? Due to life one cannot have what America offers or in any case other country around the world. It's to say that America does not struggle with poverty as well, but help is constantly offered to those who fail to acquire everyday needs. Poverty is found worldwide and in different parts of town and that's the truth, that's what Buñuel focal point is on. Life is Mexico is completely different than in America, and parents are not to blame, it's the lack of education that makes the country suffer. Overall, it's a fantastic film that will leave you stunned and if you like unpredictable stories I suggest you check it out.
La otra conquista (1998)
Conquista
"La Otra Conquista" directed and written by Salvador Carrasco, is a film that not only tells a story of human struggle to survival, but also carries historical background that has been nullified throughout history. Identity, religion, truth, faith, tolerance, are all at stake. This film captures such vivid and memorable images that conquer the heart of those who truly understand the Aztecs' struggle. The clash of both religions would have made an impact in history and change the world. This film also contains both historical facts and occurrences in 1521. In today's society some teachers, in grade school, teach about the finding of America with minimal understanding of what truly happened; they claim that Columbus, Cortes and other great historians found America. But what about those who lived there before? Why disregarded those who really discover America? Therefor, Carrasco explores and tells history from a different perspective. No longer focusing on what many have been taught in grade school. The Aztec people had their own gods but when Cortes arrived he forced all of them to change their ways of living. History has taught that Cortes did the right thing; however, does doing the right thing include forcing people to give up who they are for the sake of the colonizers? Where was the tolerance towards one another? The truth of it all is, religion is where many find their identity. Why? Because when one follows the one and ONLY God he or she can find out what's the purpose of it all. Topiltzin, the main character of the film is forced to do just that to give himself up. And although they tried to teach him he just couldn't let go of his beliefs because that was what made him Topiltzin. The film goes deeper into exploring what boundaries the colonizers crossed. Should we not strive towards self-realization and world peace? Achieve social acceptance and equality for all? This film targets those qualities that as a nation should be fulfilled, to get out of that comfort zone and have a difference perspective the world that surrounds us.
