Jules et Jim (1962)
probably not for most people unless you really like french/art films
hi everyone,
I watched this film as it was in the top 100 romantic films in a list produced by the Guardian. i had previously watched 'Umbrellas of Cherbourg' from the same list and could see why the film was there (though if you see that film, be warned every word is sung). This film however was a different kettle of fish, i watched it with my better half, and as the film went on, your heart sank, as you realised you began to desperately hope for the end of the film to come. If you like good characterisation, a story line that is psychologically meaningful then this film is not for you. Yes i can see its poetic, artistic, there is a stream of consciousness about it, but i feel for most people and definitely for me its a 'no'. Its not a classic, its not romantic, it doesn't have great meaning, the characters act on a whim, the main 'lead woman' should be sectioned, and why the two men put up with her, is beyond me (god help her poor child).
Proof (2005)
a film about mental health, being clever and relationships
Hi I've read a lot of the reviews and i can see why most people like this film. its story area may have been touched on in a beautiful mind and good will hunting, but it takes a different slant on it. AnthonyHopkins is a maths genius but becomes mentally unwell and looses hispowers mathematically. He has two daughters the youngest of which is Gwyneth Paltrow who stays behind to look after him. This costs her and she becomes trapped by him though they connect mentally through mathematics. After his death the elder sister comes back: there is agood take on mental health here because she is very controlling and undermining but would see herself as well strong and here to look afterher sister. The other main character play by Jake G. is a ray of sunshine to me (some have found in unrealistic in their reviews) and the scene is set for a well acted film with a good script...
Everything (2004)
beautifully acted film
This story contains two principle actors and most of the film is them in conversation. if you like action films you will not like this, if you like films with emotional content, as the focus then this is your type of film. the actors are very good, the script is very good and film works, i believed it and i found it enjoyable to watch. the film has no gratuitous sex and is about relationships, life and the scrapes we get into...i would give it a watch. Ray Winston and Jan Graveson are cast well. Some people will hate the film for being slow especially at the start (and i have seen that on some of the reviews) but as i said it is a relationship based film..and relationships are slow at the start!
Inception (2010)
Freud meets action film
hi as ever when you start writing here its because you have had a strong reaction one way or another. the strong reaction here is that the film gets a 9 out of 10 rating and this is way way too high. the film uses the Freudian idea of the mind as having depth, multi layered and having defenses he uses this idea to create an action film. the idea of defense means that the director spends literally long periods of the film with people shooting each other as the defense attacks the people coming into the mind. as a result this is a one dimensional look at dreams, so its James bond meets psychology...it really doesn't work.....don't believe the hype
thanks will & vero
