Nothing like the book
10 April 2024
If you are a fan of the book, you will probably be disappointed with the movie. The reason the spice is so valuable has been completely ignored, and the screenwriters took it upon themselves to create a new story, that has similarities to the book Dune.

Before Lord of the Rings was released, I thought that Hollywood couldn't do the book justice, but Peter Jackson did a magnificent job of Lord of the Rings.

Villeneuve has hacked a great book into a typical Hollywood formulaic movie, with non of the imaginative ideas that made Dune such a great book.

The acting was good, the effects were good, pity about the lack of a coherent story.

Orlando (1992)
4/10
Poorly done
25 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Although the costumes were good and the story interesting, the key concept, that Orlando was born a man, and became a woman failed. Orlando was always obviously a woman, Tilda Swinton who I admire as an actress did not act like a man in anyway, the body language was always feminine.

In the movie Predestination, Sarah Snook shows that a woman can play a man.

Dean Spanley (2008)
9/10
Excellent characterizations by the actors
30 October 2019
Peter O'Toole is an incredible actor, and he gives his best in this movie. Sam Neill was quite amazing as Dean Spanley, the part really allowed him to display his amazing talent. Brian Brown Jeremy Northam and Judy Parfitt also give stellar performances, but their characters didn't allow their talent to shine like O'Toole and Neill. No violence, no sex, and thoroughly entertaining.

The Rover (2014)
10/10
Fantastic
14 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This isn't your usual Hollywood movie, no good looking hero saving the damsel in distress. There are no good guys in this movie, with the exception of the vet.

Guy Pearce is mean and angry, he is no pretty boy in this movie, but he is very real.

Others have compared this to Mad Max, but Max is just a typical good looking hero stopping the bad guys, the Rover is about reality.

It is only in the last few minutes that you realize that the main character still cares about one thing, and why he will do whatever it takes to do the right thing by an old friend, his dog Rover.

This will be a flop, people cannot stand reality, but if you can get passed your fairytale view of mankind you will realize what a brilliant movie this really is.

Bliss (1985)
Unique
28 October 2011
I was just killing time and ended up spotting the link to Bliss. If I am asked what is my favorite movie I always say bliss. I could not believe that so few people have reviewed this masterpiece. This isn't a movie for everyone some of it is quite dark in nature but the characterizations are brilliant. Even though I hadn't seen the movie for many years when I saw that it was going to be shown television a few years back I realized before I saw it again that I knew Harry Joy told stories I remembered most of the plot but just couldn't wait to see it again.

If you like your movies a bit different this is really different and well worth a try if your adventurous.

Other movies I like include Babel Das Boot, Dr Strangelove, V, American Beauty, Being John Malkovich, Bad Santa.

The Castle (1997)
8/10
To many jokes to catch in one viewing
11 June 2011
I just saw the Castle again on television. It is still funny and some of the quotes from the movie like "straight to the pool room" and "dreamin" have actually moved into the language. Many have explained the plot so I won't bother. The director Robb Sitch also did a television series called frontline, which is a very funny look at the world of television journalism. If you like the Castle I'm sure you will like frontline.

One other piece of trivia, the Queens Council who eventually represents the family in court is played by Bud Tingwell. Mr Tingwell looks like a very gentle older man in the movie and it may surprise many to know that he was a WWII fighter pilot flying Spitfire's and Mosquito's in North Africa and Sicily.

Wilfred (2007–2010)
8/10
Really different
16 May 2011
Wilfred isn't your usual comedy, The hero Wilfred is a guy in a dog suit. Wilfred behaves rather badly and is really a bit of a dog. He can talk to Adam who is his owners boyfriend and other dogs but no other humans. A bit like Mr Ed I guess but this one is R rated. Wilfred smokes parties and is in general a bit of an animal. The interactions between other dogs who are also people in dog suits and Wilfred is really quite amazing. From bragging about the privileges his humans give him to sniffing what the other dog had for dinner last night the script is quite amazing. This is not your usual American sitcom and is way out on the fringe of comedy, but if you are not easily offended and want to see something truly different watch Wilfred.
