Bedtime (2020)
Very Fun Short
There were a couple of lines of dialogue on the father's part that felt a little stilted, which was probably only noticeable because of how short Bedtime is. Otherwise it was a great ride all around.
Sincerely Louis CK (2020)
Alternating Between Amusing and Cringe-worthy, I Can't Imagine How it Won a Grammy
There are comedic moments in Louis CK's new special, but there's a solid Vox article comparing his attempt at a comeback with Jerrod Michael's Rothaniel that does a good job articulating many of my own feelings on his latest material. It's hard to understand why the Academy would not allow Bo Burnham's Inside into the Comedy Category, but this feels like a case of someone only winning because some technicality kneecapped the competition.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Chapter Thirty-Six: At the Mountains of Madness (2020)
What Were the Writers Thinking?
I couldn't bring myself to actually watch the episode, having seen so many terrible reviews for it. But just reading the plot in detail has me scratching my head as to how this episode wasn't stopped at the screen play stage. Surely this hurts like DVD sales and such?
Overall was already feeling the last couple of seasons were significantly declined versus the first couple, so this is a very kick 'em while they're down ending.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)
Downward Slope In Quality
If you really hacked away at editing the last couple of seasons (or just killed them entirely) this retelling of Sabrina would be a solid 8; the sort of show I'd even encourage a daughter to watch as I know at least my younger cousin was enjoying it while in high school.
But the last two seasons were haphazard, with only a few highlights and, despite being short by episode count, felt constantly like they were dragging as eternally as some of their immortal villains' lives have been. Even then, maybe it'd deserve a 7, but my general stance is shows should get better (or end) instead of being allowed to so aggressively jump the shark. As such, I can't recommend it and moderately regret not putting it down as soon as I realized that Salem doesn't talk in this iteration.
Freaks (2018)
Cool Time Bubbles - Crappy Plot
Most of the halfway decent things are super derivative from X-men. And maybe it's supposed to be a genre deconstruction of what happens with a seven year old has that much power, or maybe I just know brighter seven year olds.
But for a girl who has been cared for her whole life by her father and drilled on what she needs to do to survive, she's unfathomably stupid throughout the film and ultimately gets her dad killed.
Trollhunters: Adventures in Trollsitting (2016)
Too Many Idiot Balls
Liking the series but this episode drove the plot handing out idiot balls left and right.
The Leftovers: Two Boats and a Helicopter (2014)
Great Tension
I thought the end was dumb, but it had some of the greatest moments of genuine tension and uncertainty that I've seen in a show of late.
Chris D'Elia: No Pain (2020)
Maybe I was in a Bad Mood?
Whatever the reason, like NOTHING landed. I didn't find a minute of this special funny and had to watch the whole thing due to my wife.
The Good Doctor: Seven Reasons (2018)
Miss On Complex Issues
No serious internal debate on actions making everyone involved in some manner worse, including society as a whole. Cool story bro.
Teen Titans: The Judas Contract (2017)
Original Show Still Wins Out
The continued attempts to bring back the Titans is appreciated, but I have yet to see one as incredibly likable as the original series.
The movie series continues to miss Tara Strong's voice acting for Raven and the character Tara isn't nearly as adorable as the first go round.
That said, I enjoy Damian and the Blue Beatle's inclusion and the interactions between Starfire and Nightwing were great.
