The Whale (2022)
Falsettos - years later
The acting by Brendan Fraser is fantastic. He did a great job. The writing is what holds this movie down. It's just Falsettos but years later with no singing. And, the characters' need for exposition is forced at times. Like, the film is running out of time and certain mysteries were not brought up so characters explain these mysteries, however difficult they are to talk about, for no real reason. The daughter Ellie is understandably upset about her father abandoning her. But, her reaction to this is to overact, embarrass everyone around her with her unnecessary sex and drug jokes and post horrific jokes online. A little too on the nose.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
A love letter for Hollywood
This movie is definitely not for everyone. It would be like if you asked everyone in the world to watch Lawrence of Arabia. You would get the same reaction from some: "too long" "too boring" "nothing happens". Not every film is for everyone. This film is meant to entertain those who've seen a lot of movies and appreciate Hollywood's history. Seeing the old neon signs of landmarks that are no longer there, the beautiful artwork of movie posters on every street, the colorful clothes and styles - the attention to detail is a result of love. No wonder QT decided to make a western TV series after this. Hearing him talk so much about the Virginian and how great the old westerns were really shows in this movie. And, the ending is exactly what I thought he would do - there's no rule that says you need to make a film about the past historically accurate unless you claim it to be. This is a well made movie without a doubt.
John from Cincinnati: His Visit: Day Five (2007)
Wow...
Just saw this now. Beautiful. I can't believe I'm the only person who saw this and wanted to say something about it. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
The way John gathers everyone together (even the spirit in room 24) and vaguely speaks about intangibles? No one is listening, and they all are listening. How Bill visualizes his stairs and climbs them for the first time after his wife's death? While playing his harmonica along with Freddy's sax? Everyone feels good, and at the same time unsure and uneasy? There's too much to unspool here. Which makes this episode (and this show) perfect for re-watching.
