Kidding (2018)
Jim Carrey, once again, shows his incredible talent and range
If you were expecting an "In Living Color" Jim Carrey, you will be sorely disappointed with Kidding. This is an absolutely grand dark comedy with an amazing supporting cast with Catherine Keener and the incredible Frank Langella. Kidding explores the reality behind a children's television icon. The face portrayed on the kids show is starkly contrasted by the reality of a man whose life is in pieces. Carrey's portrayal of "Jeff", the man at the center of the chaos, grasps at things and makes decisions that might seen good ideas at the moment, but may well cause more destruction down the road. Carrey is masterful playing a very broken Jeff admidst a life that is on the trajectory of coming undone.
Just as a second warning, this is a dark comedy, and a very good one at that. I cannot wait to see where the season takes us.
The Happytime Murders (2018)
Melissa and Maya steal the show!
You think it would be hard to upstage puppets being murdered, having sex, and milking cows, but Melissa and Maya pulled it off. Those two ladies took a pretty lousy script and turned it into something entertaining and at times, quite funny. There is a section where just the two of them were together in a scene, and for a moment, I thought the director should have pivoted and focused on the story from thier perspective. That said, Melissa and Maya were able to put lipstick on that pig. I think Bubbles (Maya) should have her own movie, or at least her own special with Connie (Melissa) as her muscle.
The film itself does not have an intelligently written script. It has the sex and violence of Game of Thrones without a well thought-out plot, shoddy writing, directing, dialog and production value. But that doesn't mean it was unwatchable. If you suspend all notions of the critics and focus on the absurdity of the zany characters, I guarantee you will enjoy the movie.
Would I see it again? I would take my raunchiest friends to a matinee. I would probably tell them to lower their expectations, and then they would thoroughly enjoy the film. As for the critics of this film? It's not nearly as bad as the news portrays. I think they missed the point that the movie is plain dumb fun, and not to take it too seriously.
Craigslist Joe (2012)
Watch this documentary if you need your spirits lifted!
I can't even find the right adjectives to describe this documentary. I was able to live the adventure that Joe was undertaking, living for the moment, putting trust in perfect strangers hands, and be awashed in the generosity of others. Absolutely a worthwhile watch when you feel like you have had enough of the human race and their lack of humanity. This documentary rewards you in ways you didn't think possible!
The Boss (2016)
Melissa McCarthy brings physical comedy to a new golden age in The Boss
Channeling a combination of Lucille Ball and Jerry Lewis, Melissa ushers physical comedy to a whole new level. The movie starts with a little history of Michelle Darnell's troubled childhood, being rejected from family after family. As she grows up, Michelle becomes overly self-reliant, deciding to make it in the world as independently as possible. That independence comes at a cost. Will Michelle grow a conscious or continue her corporate climb, stepping on as many heads needed to make it back to the top? You have to see The Boss to find out!
It is a hilarious movie watching Michelle Darnell transform from a despicable tyrant to a heart-warming character that you ultimately root for. Kristin Bell plays the Dean Martin straight man to Melissa McCarthy's Jerry Lewis. Peter Dinklage is pure icing on the cake with expertly delivered lines and evolving hairstyle.
The kids in the movie are the real winners here. Ella and Eva steal every scene they are in, and the West Side Story rumble on the block is half kid Braveheart and half sugar- cookie filled insanity.
Is this a high-brow, erudite comedy? Newp! This is the heart-warming, trash-talking, hair scalping comedy that will keep you in a silly mood for days! If you need a pick-me-up after a long work week, this is the comedy that will have you seeking out brownies, itching for an old-fashioned street fight, and motivate you to finally ask for that raise. Now go see it!
The Revenant (2015)
Beautiful cinematography, meh plot, terrible script
If what you would want to see in a movie is beautiful cinematography hung in an Ansel Adams frame, this is the movie for you. If you want gritty historical movie with ample gore, this is the movie for you. If you want a realistic plot and realistic survival situations, you may want to pick another movie. Some of the implausible survival situations sucks you right out of the movie, willing suspension of disbelief blown, while you try to get back into the movie. If this happened only once, perhaps I could be more forgiving, but all I could think of was DiCaprio jumping up and saying "it's just a flesh wound!" It got comical and ridiculous. Be sure you can forgive many mistakes before you go see the movie.
The Interview (2014)
It's a typically fun Seth Rogen film!
Despite all of the controversy and backlash given on the film, I sat down and rented it via XBox on Christmas Day with my husband and elderly mother (who has an advanced sense of humor). We thoroughly enjoyed the movie knowing very well that it would be along the lines of This Is The End and Pineapple Express. We weren't disappointed for the type of comedy it was! My mother laughed constantly, but also needed some clarification on some of the gross slang used (stank d@ck had her stumped), and again, we enjoyed it despite a few obvious continuity errors and average graphics. We laughed, we has fun, and my elderly mother has increased her vocabulary. If you are watching this with the expectations that this is a brilliant comedy, then you will set yourself up for disappointment. Go in knowing this is a raunchy, butt joke riddled comedy and you will have fun.
