12 Years a Slave (2013)
POSS SPOILERS What a POWERFL film, until.....
What can I say that hasn't already been said? This movie taught me, it tormented me and it shamed me. The fact that a person can just be drugged and *pulled* into that type of situation sickens me to no end. Words are not enough. HOWEVER, my main complaint about the movie was that, in the beginning I noticed it was a Plan B production - ie: Brad Pitt. I was thinking to myself - wow! maybe he really DID do a good period piece without reminding us that he, the almighty BP had something to do with it.
WhaaaWhaaaa....Brad, you just couldn't keep your self-absorbed "look at me I'm a man of the people, I help Katrina, I adopt needy children" mug out of the film.
To be quite honest, I was getting into the rhythm of the film when da-da-da-daaaaaaa here come the hero Brad. He was soooo out of place! IF it wasn't for BRAD, the letter never would have gotten sent and po ol' Samson would've been stuck.
I give it a solid 7.5 outta 10 for the movie, an I give a good 10 outta 10 to Brad for his self-indulgent razzie.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
They are SEX BOB-OMB!
I'm not going to pretend to be a "reviewer" but rather an average viewer with the occasional IMHO thrown in.
IMHO (warned you) this move was quite simply awesome! I'm a 35+ woman and absolutely could relate to the Zelda and PacMac (Did you know it was originally called "Puc-Man"...) references.
It was fast paced and admittedly different from the movies I normally see. Still, being from Toronto - the movie, for me, had a rather "homey" feel (M. Cera's originally from Canada also, so I may be biased).
Haven't felt this good about a movie since "Kill Bill" and it's in that regard that I'm SURE this will become a cult fave.
Well worth the money!!
The Countess (2009)
Awful....
I normally quite enjoy period pieces. However, I'm unsure exactly where to begin with this film. The costumes and set decorations were lovely. That was the *only* thing I liked about this film. Julie Delpy's voice was often dubbed over and created quite a bit of confusion. The accents did not accurately reflect the region, and the manner of speaking did not accurately reflect the time period. I found all of these aspects to be very distracting. The acting between herself and her "lover" was cold, wooden and completely unbelievable. The acting itself is strictly 3rd rate, at best. The pace of the movie is very mechanical. I'm not sure if it's the acting itself or the storyline that makes it close to impossible to connect with or empathize with any character involved. Her lover's feeble declarations in and out of bed had me reaching for the fast-forward remote each and every time. Monotonous, tedious, poorly scripted and badly acted. I say skip the Countess and save your money.
