Solid gripping drama, black comedy with some funny parts
25 May 2020
Tammy's got a serious drinking problem which leads to her frequently going to the same bridge and threatening to jump off. Her daughter is always having to find her and literally talk her down. This one is a good movie which shows the difficulty of the daughter's life; her having to deal with her mother, having sex with a guy (who we find out is having her as a side girl to the mother of his children) and in between, trying to pretend she is someone else or somewhere else. I would recommend this if you are a fan of I, Tonya because it is a very similar style of comedy but this is more dramatic than that. Give it a shot!

The Lodge (2019)
3/10
Turns into a "religious" Christian cult movie instead of a horror movie
17 May 2020
The Lodge starts out promising enough with some chilling atmosphere and good scares, not to give any spoilers. The kids go up with their father to spend a couple days alone with their soon-to-be stepmother. Things happen and things start to get worse as you would imagine, except there is this whole religious twist to the movie that I felt unfair to Christianity. They are basically calling Christianity a cult when occult would usually not be singing traditional hymns and they would usually be reading from something other than the Bible. That aside, I felt like they took that storyline way too far. There's a lot of dead space in this movie. It's an hour and 45 minutes long but it felt like two and a half hours. I'm glad that I rented this from Redbox, because I sure would have felt ripped off if I saw it in the theater.

Joker (I) (2019)
10/10
Brilliant, Mesmerizing Performance and perfect direction
6 October 2019
Joker was a movie that comes along only so often and completely blows you away. You could hear a pin drop in our full theater. Joaquin had Ana amazing, Oscar worthy performance and I can't believe Todd Phillips directed the Hangover movies but now accomplished this.

It's as disturbing as Requiem for a Dream if you've seen that, not the most disturbing movie I've ever seen (2008's Martyrs takes the cake) but this is up there! And it is depressing as well but there are moments of laughter. I don't want to give anything away but if you have a tolerance for something a little more disturbing, I promise this is worth your time!

The websites saying it sucks are snowflake pansies that don't want to watch anything that might "offend" sensitive people. Nonsense. Go see it!

Grown Ups (I) (2010)
8/10
A great deal better than the "worst" movie or comedy
10 March 2011
The first time I saw this movie was with my dad at the movie theater. I wasn't expecting much, since I read all of the bad reviews in the paper and on Rotten Tomatoes. Well, as it turns out, you can't always trust the reviews! I find it very hard to believe that anyone could honestly say this is the worst movie they've ever seen - unless they've only seen a few movies.

It's a rather simple story - 5 buddies who grew up on the same basketball team that won a championship, reunite as grown ups when their coach dies. While I can't say the story is the most original thing on the planet, I can say this movie has a very good laugh-a-minute ratio that few other current comedies can top. Just having 5 great comedians is enough to boost this one above the average comedy. I certainly liked it more than You Don't Mess With the Zohan and Mr. Deeds, both of which are Sandler movies.

Grown Ups has a lot of heart as well. You can tell the characters really care about their families, and their coach, and are happy to reunite and see each other again. Also, there is a "going back to older times" type of lesson to the movie - the grown ups emphasize getting outdoors instead of staying inside all day and being super spoiled. It's fun to see how the kids learn to appreciate the simplicity of being outdoors, and how the grown ups connect with each other and with their kids.

While it's not going to win any Oscars, Grown Ups is a very funny movie that is worth watching. Recommended!
