True Detective: Night Country: Part 6 (2024)
Season 4, Episode 6
10/10
Great season finale to an excellent season
1 March 2024
So many twists and turns that I didn't see coming This was one of the most satisfying finales I've seen in a long time. So many of the characters' stories were reconciled - their anger and pain revealed. One can only hope that their lives get better.

Okay, I loved the first season of True Detectives, but I was realistic enough to realize that they could never recapture the brilliant writing and acting of that season. If they had tried, it would have been panned for being unoriginal. I didn't care for all the seasons of True Detective, but I appreciate that they tried with each season to come up with something new and original instead of imitating the first season.

I am so disturbed by the the barrage of super negative reviews for this season. Many of them sound like they didn't even watch the show. Their reviews often didn't even match up to the episodes' stories. Then there are the reviewers who gave 1-2 stars, but still watched the show until the end. Seriously? If I thought a show was THAT bad, I would hardly sit through an entire season of torture.

All of this makes me wonder if I should even bother to read the reviews anymore. In this case, the reviews were totally opposite to what I saw on screen. Of all the True Detective seasons, this one is 2nd to the incomparable first season. It truly was an amazing experience. I am so discouraged by the truly nasty and incomprehensible reviews I've read.

Do not listen to the negative reviews. Give this show a chance.

True Detective: Night Country: Part 3 (2024)

I really don't understand all these negative reviews
28 February 2024
I just finished watching episode 3 and I am really enjoying season 4. Perhaps it is because I am not comparing it to season 1, which was incomparable. I had no expectations that Night Country would be the same. If it was, it would just be an imitation and everyone would be complaining and giving it 1 or 2 stars for lack of originality.

I went into season 4 knowing and expecting it to be different than previous seasons. I was disappointed in season 2, but found season 3 to be much better. So far, I think Night Country will be my second favorite of the series.

I appreciate that they try to do something new and original with each season. In the process however, they are bound to disappoint a few people. At least they aren't just remaking the same tired plotline over and over again. If I want to relive season 1, then I can just rewatch it (actually I did watch it more than once).

When reviewing movies and television programs, we are given 10 stars to allocate, so it is pretty farfetched that so many people feel comfortable giving anything 1 or 2 stars. Almost any program has some redeeming qualities and this one has quite a few. The setting and atmosphere is disturbingly creepy and most of the characters are interesting. Definitely worth giving it a shot.

The Diplomat: The James Bond Clause (2023)
Season 1, Episode 8

Whoa, what a cliffhanger!
29 April 2023
I love a good cliffhanger, but it would be nice if Netflix would commit to a season two. I read that if there is a second season, we probably won't see it until the summer of 2024. That is a long time to hold one's breath. Ah, maybe they are just toying with us.

This is one of the best shows I've seen on TV in quite awhile. The writing is brilliant - fast and witty, reminiscent of Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell or Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. I found myself frequently rewinding so I could relish every word. Now I'm rewatching it as clearly I missed a lot the first time around.

The chemistry between Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell is incredible and their characters relationship is fascinating and unique. From my perspective, nothing about the story was predictable or formulaic. And of course the ending completely caught me off guard.

Eight episodes was much too short and they just flew by. Hopefully, a season two will be a bit longer, if of course there IS a season two. I highly recommend this show, but watch it when you can give it your full attention.

Edit to add: Monday Netflix announced that The Diplomat has been renewed for a second season. According to Variety, The Diplomat has taken the top spot on Netflix's weekly global Top 10 TV English list. I just rewatched the entire first season.

Why are so many people entering their Social Security numbers into a public machine?
3 April 2023
So far I am really enjoying this show. The idea is relatively unique; it rather reminds me of something you might have seen on Twilight Zone years ago.

So far Apple TV has come up with some of the most original programs on TV today. Of course, not all have been winners, but most of them are creative and binge-worthy. There is a reason Apple has received so many Emmy nominations the past few years. They take chances instead of churning out the same old programming.

It might seem a bit slow in the beginning, but it is worth hanging in there, as there are some great characters and unexpected storylines. Of course, throughout, you are wondering, where did this machine come from and what is its purpose? Is that purpose for good or evil?

All that said, I have to say that even though I know it is a fantasy/sci-fi show, I really had a problem every time a customer typed in his/her Social Security number without hesitation. Now THAT is truly fantasy!

As other reviewers have mentioned, this really is not a comedy, so don't expect any great laughs. Just go with the flow and see where it takes you. It probably won't appeal to everyone, but it works for me.

Have any of these people even watched an 1920s movie?
10 March 2023
Aside from the ridiculous frenetic pace of this movie, the fact that very few of the characters look like actors from the 1920s (more like the 2020s) was a major disappointment. Makeup, clothes, hair? Seriously? This was a very distinct and well documented era. So much effort and expense was put into the scenes of the wild parties and the chaos of early film sets, but no one took the time to make sure the clothing, makeup, and hairstyles were somewhat accurate.

I love period pieces when they are done well and I am especially drawn to the 1920s. I watched this movie in spite of the many negative reviews, because I thought it was going to really capture 1920s Hollywood. Great cast and so much talent, but it clearly was a wasted opportunity. This should have been so much better.

I am exhausted!
15 April 2022
What a season finale, I was on the edge of my seat for the entire show. Such an original and unique program. The hard part will be waiting an entire year for season two. Apple TV has outdone themselves with Severance.

The second season is better than the first
16 March 2022
Season two focuses more on the other characters and less on Emma. Overall, the cast is outstanding, but Molly Windsor as the lead was just not believable. She looked, acted, and talked like an immature fifteen year old girl. Believing she was a forensic lab technician was a stretch and her relationship with an older man was implausible.

All the other performances were excellent and the forensics were fascinating. Season two moves away from the Emma-Daniel story and focuses on a series of bomb attacks that are terrorizing the community. Meanwhile, Kathy Torrance and Erika are trying to identify the remains of a young man submerged in the water who had not been reported missing.

I still have one episode to go and hope there will be a third season.

Inventing Anna (2022– )

Nine episodes?
20 February 2022
I really tried, but after four episodes, I was done. I was intrigued by Sorokin's story, but not enough to sit through five more episodes. I finally gave up and read about her on Wikipedia.

There were some good performances, but basically I really didn't care about any of the characters and I never found Julia Garner's Anna believable. A lot of people complained about her annoying voice and weird accent. I have to agree that was painful to listen to.

I think I would have preferred to see Sorokin's story as a documentary. I gave it five stars which is probably generous, but I did sit through four entire episodes.

So I wasn't the only one
20 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I was checking the reviews to see if I was the only one who found the fake baby really weird. Actually, it was down right creepy watching everyone smiling and beaming over the birth of a strange looking plastic baby. It was so disappointing and ruined the whole episode.

Hopefully, they will never try to do anything so fake in the future. I can't imagine what they were thinking.

The Rookie: True Crime (2021)
Season 3, Episode 7

Very clever episode
2 March 2021
Definitely a change of pace for The Rookie, but I really enjoyed the quirky humor, something I've come to expect from anything with Nathan Fillion. It even had Rainn Wilson playing himself, which was an added treat.

I don't understand the negative reviews for this episode. Anyone who has watched Fillion in Firefly and Castle shouldn't be surprised if any project he is in takes a wittier tone now and then. Some people need to lighten up. I don't suppose every episode of a show is going to be exactly what they think it should be. For myself, I like it when writers get creative and try something new occasionally.

The Rookie (2018– )

The third season of this show is the best so far
19 February 2021
I started watching The Rookie because I can watch almost anything that has Nathan Fillion in it. The first season was okay, but after a while, the training officers ridiculing and humiliating their trainees every week got pretty tiresome and redundant. I wasn't sure how realistic that was, but some police have left reviews indicating that it was.

I stayed with the show because of Fillion and I'm glad I did, as the stories got much better and the characters started to become more 3-dimensional and relatable. The third season is the best so far and last night I actually binge watched three episodes. They touched more on the characters' personal lives, as well as the work related issues. For those who are looking for action, there was plenty of that as well. Of course with Nathan Fillion, there will always be some humor.

The reason for my review is because of all the negative reviews for this season. Many viewers claim the show has become too "political" and "woke", but the only people talking about politics are these particular viewers. Where they see politics, I see real life issues that today's police have to deal with on a regular basis. Racism is not political, it is societal and it is very real. I'm sorry if some people don't find that entertaining.

As I read more of the negative reviews, I noticed that many of them sounded almost identical, often using the same terminology. I don't know if that is a coincidence, a lack of originality, plagiarism, or a concerted effort to undermine the show, but I seriously hope it doesn't reflect the opinion of most of the viewers.

I hope ABC doesn't cancel this show, as there are still so many stories left to tell.
