Beacon 23: God in the Machine (2023)
Great acting in this two hander
Set 180 years in the past, the creator of the Beacon project makes a surprise visit to Beacon 23.
This leads to an existential crisis of the meaning of life between the lighthouse keeper played brilliantly by Barbara Hershey, and the creator also greatly acted.
We understand the functioning of Bart short for Bartholomew in the conflict between AI and humans.
The question of trust and family and religious beliefs are throughly examined in reinvention of hippy culture.
The set and pacing are extremely well done with only the concluding scene as the weakest
It leads to why AI and there partners are so tight.
Fingernails (2023)
Good idea good hook wrong lead actress
The premise of this scfi horror thriller. The fingernail pull is the perfect metifor for love and heartbreak.
It looks at the idea of loneliness even if it hurts
Unfortunately the lead actress is coping with a fake accent ( she is Irish) and weird makeup on her neck.
With her being in every scene the movie rides on her. The director downplays how wildly emotional please in intimate would be
It plays more as a melodrama than a fantasy
The colour pallet of chose is not well chosen. And doesn't examine what the societal ( many suicides) cost of so many people finding there relationships are doomed
I.
Wilderness (2023)
Final 2 minutes ruin the rest of series.
Coleman is okay as the sceaming wife in this neo noir melodrama.
Liv is the perfect trad wife, beautiful, dutiful and smart.
Her husband is gorgeous and charmng. By the end of first episode she has a reason to kill him and show that she is smarter than her mother.
Fate intervenes and she has to pivot to pin the murder of the mistress on someone else.
Her mother is just a dramtic device and the the actress is a cliché
All this set up where she ultimately wins everything she wants
The director decided to ads a " twist" it is revealed after what should have been the finale.
Could not make a poltical statement about the male gaze.
The Mother (2023)
Bad rip off of a Genna Davis movie
This inferior copy of the underrated Genna Davis film the The Long Kiss Goodnight
Jenifer Lopez does not have the physicality to pull off the idea that she once undercover hit women.
Even setting it in the freezing cold mirrors the Davis film.
Edie Falco put in her normal superior performance and scence stealing from Lopez.
Writer Misha Green puts in an unnecessary cameo for herself. With so many producer ( 11) it appears this was a passion project for Lopez drawing on her freinds in Hollywood to put up the money to get this made
Do yourself a favour go watch the orginal on Netflix instead of the pale imitation.
The Consultant (2023)
This is a movie masquerading as a seriies
The reveal that the consultant is a robot is so obvious from episode 2 where he almost causes the glass floor on the executive floor to shatter due to his weight means this is a movie masquerading as a series.
Waltz plays the lead with his usual chilling performance and the female leads are middling and beautiful with the only thing having a tech company much more diverse than they usually are
The writing contains a great deal of padding to make nine episodes
My suggestion watch episode 1 and 2 and then jump ti the last 2. It will make little difference to your viewing enjoyment
Id have rated it a seven if it was a movie ( Im padding her lol)
First Kill (2022)
The series painted itself into a corner
This Netflix series was good but unfortunely it was cancelled after one season, when it painted itself into a plot corner that left the series stranded.
The open episode is very strong asthe two female leads reveal a mutual attraction. With It a great twist ending by showing each lead's back story leading to "the kiss"
Of course since this is a lesbian Romeo and Juliet they are star crossed and their families are enemies.
Proceeding to the ultimate battle between the families. It would have been a good ending but in a desperate attempt to find a reason for season two they introduce a story line that is suppose to make you hate the new protagonist. Oliver.
It seems extremely contrived.
It was becoming just another vampire are outcasts and gay teens are outcast series, Netflix pulled the plug
In a nice nod to matriarchy the family is called the Atwoods.
Swimming with Sharks (2022)
Great to binge trash we all need
This exactly the mindless reworking of ALL about Eve we need. The trashiness is so wonderful
Shipka playing the Anne Baxter role but with more of a psychopathic edge
And With Sutherland giving his Harvey Weinstein impression and. Diane Kruger A Sherry Lansing vibe.
The gay assistance playing the bitichy vibe to the max.by. Thomas. Dekker
iI is like a train wreck you cant look away from.
Because it is about the Hollywood film industry all the cast are ridiculously beautiful
Of course some nudity and mild drug taking and a few good cameos
It guarantees Shipka will be many more projects just like EVE.
Werewolf by Night (2022)
great little short
This short done in beautiful black and white is just the right length
Harrison saw keeps showing her great range from the hilarious agent on Frasier to the the evil leader of the monster hunters here.
The playing of somewhere over the the rainbow is to remind you that "monsters are te queer community while hunter are the Christian right. I case you missed it
I hope with streaming now the viewing of choice for most people we will see more of this medium length feature from Disney and Netflix
The fight scene of course top notch as that is Marvel Studio reason d'etre. The weapon design is inspired.
Watch it.
American Gigolo: Nothing Is Real But the Girl (2022)
Rosie O'donnell shines in this episode
Ms Odonell givess a master class in acting as the tough cop with a soft side. Totally believable as a 30 year veteran.
The interaction of her and her captain is helpful to set her up as the person to carry the series to the end with the inevitable tragic finale coming.
The pressure of defending her son by Mol is the weakest part of this episode.
The interaction between Julian and his client shows why he is the best as what he does.
This is a perfect bridging episode to move forward the plot without revealing too much.
It doesn't lead up to who is going to take the fall for Olga's death and make want to see it to the last episode.
Chloe (2022)
watch first 3 episode than jump to last two and ignore the dresses
The entire series should have been 4 episode top but the acting is great
the recap at the beginning of episode 8 will bring you up to speed.
The costumer was desperate to make the giant puffy sleeves a thing.
The lead actress wear one in almost ever episode.
The Man from Toronto (2022)
It all about if you like Kevin Hart
This paint by number buddy film
If like Kevin Hart you will like this otherwise don't waste your time.
It also very irritating that they keep pronouncing the second T in Toronto.
The Lake (2022)
Ignore the haters.
This the most Canadian depiction of cottage life. This series set in North Bay Area of Ontario and the Lake looks the WASP enclave of lake Muskoka
Julia Stiles is solid as always. The rest of cast have good comedic timing
And the NIMBY is brought to the extreme
Many great quips.
Enjoy. If you like frost epi. You while like the rest.
.
Anatomy of a Scandal (2022)
Most of the negativity is so British class warfare
This is a good look of how a political scandal is well handled. The look at the unique English justice system is great and makes st of the negative reviews are by people who don't believe looking at the English upper class is a proper reason for a tv series
Enjoy.
Parallèles (2022)
Definitily watch in French
Like other reviewers have stated. Don't watch the English dubbed version.
There is little explanation of some of the dumb decision the teenager make.
Also I found I could n otget connected to the series
just enjoy the ride.
Pieces of Her (2022)
Two episode too long
Episode 6 and seven are completely unnecessary they are completely padding to make it an eight episode series which Netflix requires. The first three are great the next three are medium and the last two are fine it is only the acting of Toni Collette that holds the series together it would've been much better if it was shorter.
Dream Horse (2020)
lovely to see two giant stars make a small movie
It wonderful to see the always wonderful Toni Collette and star of Ballions Damien Lewis ,play in this lovely heart warming movie. It is a complete change of pace for Lewis who usually plays hard driven aholes. He he plays a made who needs a second change and Collette the middle aged pub owner. With a stable marriage looking to find a reason to get up in the morning.
They find it in a brood mare and its foal that goes on to be a steeple chase racehorse.
Since tht star cant speak the movie show welsh life and community..
IT is worth the 150 minutes to watch.
Inventing Anna (2022)
Very Hollywood take on Celebrity reporting.
Anna, the lead played by the chameleon like Julia Garner, hits all the right spots as a Eurotrash con women who life leaves destruction in her wake due extreme narcissism .
The story progresses though flack backs to examine how she ensnared her victims and became topic of the most read story in the fictional Manhattan ( actually New York) magazine
The final episode does what Hollywood now does with most stories about reporting about Instagram crime and focuses on the reporting not the criminal as the cause.
Ann Chumsky. Continues in her march to become one of the great actresses of the early 21st century.
Billions: Icebreaker (2018)
Malkovich steals episode
As usual in less than 3 minutes. Malkovich steals the entire episode. It makes every other actor look like amateur hour. It makes for many beautiful exchanges between Damien Lewis and john.
In from the Cold (2022)
Terrible acting by one character ruin whole series
The wooden acting of Kincaid as Becca bring the action and drama To a screeching halt every time she appears on screen. The producers seem to figure this out and have minimized her appearance. The rest of the series is well handled with an obvious twist ending it's an enjoyable weekend bingeing.
The Last Lullaby (2008)
The title says more about the actor's Career
This is standard B film with no surprises and very low budget. It is just a good time filler. You will forget it 10 seconds after you finish stream it but it a decent performance by Sizemore. Most are TV movie veterans. Just enjoy.
Sunshine (2007)
Massive plot hole ruins good acting
They never explain why the send people to do this mission. And why only two ships the fate of mankind is at stake. It would be much more sense to go unmanned and as many vessel as possible to reignite the sun.
But if you can put that aside it well acted and Chris Evans is unexpectedly good.
The Protégé (2021)
La Femme Nikita knock off
If you were a fan of the series Nikita you will l like this., as it is a barely diguise extension of her character in the show.
Maggie Q is good as The Protégé and Samuel L. Jackson plays his standard self. No surprises
Just a nice violent 120 minutes.
Titans (2018)
Season 3 major plot whole ruins season
The problem in season 3 is that there is not one crisis which Superboy could not have solved by myself. Even the closing fight scenes his super speed he would have been able to take the guns from all the baddies.
The idea that just because Jason says don't bring Superboy doesn't mean they would have to listen.
Chaos Walking (2021)
Nice little sci fi
This Tom Holland project is a easy watch.
When a female crash survive meet Holland she finds that all the men have developed the "noise". All the males hear each other thought.
But where are the women.
This is basis of the story.
Well acted a good chase movie. A true space western with real horses and of course an adorable dog.
Passing (2021)
The use of silence is great
Ms Hall direction of this film about colour in the US is fabulous. The opening told with no musical score and muffled sound brings the tension up to the meeting when Clare reveals she is passing.
The use of black and white also highlights the differences.
