Gotti (2018)
7/10
Clearly, I'm in the minority
30 June 2019
The majority of reviews have come down on this movie like a ton of bricks. Yet I loved it. I would add "...warts and all " except that I didn't detect any warts. It was admirably constructed and John Travolta was superb as Gotti. The New York mob talk was rivetting as well as shocking; it's full impact driven home in my case by the need for subtitles. I didn't think Travolta had the theatrical range to take on this challenge. I was so wrong. Buy it in the full knowledge it's essentially a horrifically true story and then lose yourself in a 100+ minutes of guilt-laced pleasure.

This is television to die for

It's a TV masterpiece, worthy of a repeat every calendar year; a spellbinding performance and if I could give it eleven stars I wouldn't hesitate. Cast and crew, please take a bow.

I'm the Law (1953– )
8/10
Vintage Black and White Police Drama
16 March 2012
Our family didn't have TV in 1953/54 but the next door neighbours did. I was 8 or 9 at the time and I can still remember the closing scenes of "I Am The Law"on Friday afternoons. If my (pretty ancient) memory serves me correctly, George Raft's programme was aired immediately before "The Cisco Kid" on BBC Television (the only player in town !). I would love to think someone somewhere would issue the series on DVD, but I'm not holding my breath. Here in the United Kingdom, very little early television survives, America, on the other hand - due to its enormously large land mass - carefully filmed popular shows for syndicated distribution. Many programmes survive in excellent condition including "Criminologist" with Canadian actor Donald Woods at the helm.
