Pacific Rim (2013)
5/10
So Glad Del Toro Left The Hobbit
15 November 2013
Watched Pacific Rim last night and to be honest I only wanted to see it because I think Idris Elba is class. Although I think he has went down in my estimations getting on board with this tripe!

What was up with the acting? Honestly, it felt like Del Toro asked everyone when he was filming to pretend they were doing an episode on Nickelodeon! I mean the 2 scientists, they could have been played by Kenan & Kel and it wouldn't have been more over the top!

I guess it is a saving grace though that this film was made, as it meant a certain director didn't get to see through one of my all time favourite fantasy stories. Don't get me wrong, The Hobbit wasn't without its faults but I reckon it would have been massacred under Del Toro!

Warrior (2011)

Bravo Nick

Warrior is one of those films, you've got nothing to do on a Friday night, so you take a trip to the video store (even though your getting a DVD) and you pick it up and think, I'll give this a try.

I get in the car and 2 mins down the road i've forgotten what movie I've chosen, in fact I'm contemplating a game of FIFA. No no I'll put this on.

Wow, what can I say. I was expecting another Rocky in the Octagon and what I got was a film that delivers on so many emotional levels. Not only does it do this but it does it without a single molecule of cheese. That's where this film has succeeded for me. I'm not big on sports films and hands down this is the best of the genre I have seen.

Lastly, I would also like to point out that Nick Nolte's performance is arguably one of the best performances i've seen on screen. His character is simple, with little complexity yet the acting was anything but.

Highly recommended to anyone.

Prometheus (I) (2012)

Alien Resurrection 2?
20 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
OK, so I went to see Prometheus last night and can't help but feel unsatisfied with the conclusion.

Firstly, I will start with what I enjoyed about this film as it was not all bad.

1: Michael Fassbender's performance 2: Cinematography 3: Visual Effects 4: This is a prequel not just some smart ass movie that is based in the same 'universe' as Ridley's original. 5: Idris Elba (although I did question a few of his actions)

Unfortunately, thats where it stops. I'm not going to go on about the behaviour of some characters as I agree with other reviews that some of the decisions, actions of some were questionable. My main gripe is with the emotional detachment I had with the actors. Aside from Fassbender there wasn't really any characterisation for anyone else which unlike Alien I cared for each character.

When a mutated Fifield returns to the ship and goes on a mini killing spree, who does he kill again? I don't remember seeing any of those guys before?!

Another thing that really annoyed me about this film is that all the way through you are kind of in awe with the Visual Effects and the advanced technology that is being used, then we get hit with an unrealistic, prosthetic 90 year old Guy Pearce? I thought to myself half way through, there must be a scene where Weyland miraculously ages backwards or something but no, hes just an old man all the way through! I'm sure Ian McKellen could have done those scenes?

To conclude, watching this film has made me want to do one thing, watch Alien again. The question you have to ask though is, do I want to because I've just watched the prequel or do I need reminding of what a great sci/fi horror is?
