Cringy but Adorable
30 November 2020
It's embarrassing, cringy, sickly sweet, unoriginal, but, God help me, I do like this film. It's not going to win any awards, and I'd definitely change the channel if someone walked in and caught me watching it, but it's adorable and uplifting with a positive message. It's the sort of film where you get the impression that the only thing the creators wanted to achieve was to put a smile on your face.

Flicka (2006)

Terrible Lifetime-esque Film
14 February 2016
If you love horses as sentient and amazing creatures, capable of thoughts and feelings and deserving of respect, then avoid this film as it will just infuriate you. If you love horses as riding equipment or as something to show off on Instagram, you'll probably enjoy it.

Katy (Alison Lohman) doesn't love horses, she loves riding them. There is a difference. If she loved Flicka she would have been just as satisfied watching her run free as a wild mustang, but instead she had to imprison her and break her so that she could ride her and feel 'free' at the expense of the poor horse.

I've always been a fan of Alison Lohman, but this film managed to ruin that. She is completely miscast as a sixteen year old free- spirit (read: spoilt brat). In her mid-twenties during filming she is just too old for the part, highlighted by the casting of parents so close in age to her. The character is so thoroughly unlikeable and seemingly perpetually miserable.

From what I have heard the book is for a mature audience, but this film adaptation is most definitely for rednecks or the brain-dead Lifetime market.

Cute, Feel-good and Charming, but Clumsy.
5 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Having seen God Help the Girl evolve from it's Kickstarter roots to its coming together as an actual film; I was really looking forward to the final completion. The trailer alone seemed to promise a charming little story of a fledgling pop group and the quirks of its individual members.

Though attractive and feel-good, the actual film was a bit disappointing. The music seems to pop up randomly and awkwardly, serving little purpose to the story, and the choreography is clumsy. Some parts of the musical numbers are almost embarrassing to watch. Even the wonderful Emily Browning just resorts to a doe-eyed pouting when singing the songs, as they are often unrelated to the scene and I presume she was left clueless as to how else to perform them.

The non-musical moments aren't much better. The scenes don't run smoothly from each other. For example, one moment the band are infuriated at their lack of progress. They have songs, but they have yet to perform any of them. Yet, upon advertising for members they are chased by an enthusiastic mob of auditionees. It creates a fun scene but it came from nowhere and then leads nowhere.

A French love interest for Eve is another redundant theme. Nothing is offered to the plot and nothing is gained. He disappears just as unnoticeably as he entered. Later on, Eve gets wasted and parties around town with a dancer who only appears for that one scene, another confusing addition.

Where the film shines is in the moments where the band members just live their lives and dream. There is a lovely scene in which Eve, Cassie and James take a boat trip, talk frivolously and drink wine. Later on, they play in an outdoor gym whilst discussing their intentions for their band . And another scene at the pool when they debate David Bowie's place in a girl's coming of age. Sweet moments that endear us to the film and the characters.

But, for all these moments, the main characters of Eve, Cassie and James are only ever touched upon superficially. We get that Eve is troubled, James is a dreamer and Cassie is child-like. But that is all we get.

In the final scenes Eve overdoses, and the only thing this serves to the film is her awakening that the band isn't good enough for her. At the end Eve just gets on a train and leaves, bored of the band and their music. The relationship established throughout the film just thrown away, and it leaves the film to crumble around it. At the end of the film we are exactly where we were at the beginning, and it feels like a monumental waste of time.

Having said all of this, I did find the film very cute and watchable. It is sweet and charming, almost twee at times, but I just feel that it could have been so much more than it actually was. I also feel that James and Cassie were the protagonists of this film and that the story would have been better suited to them. It would have been more likable. The film ends with them riding off together on Cassie's tandem bicycle, and we realise too late that we should have been rooting for these two the entire film, and not the selfish and destructive Eve.

Embarrassing
12 January 2011
I had high hopes for this film. British films tend to have depth to them and I like Noel Clarke. However, this was almost embarrassing to watch. The writing is on par with those terrible Olsen movies and the plot isn't much better. The film seemingly was just written to string together various scenes of the girls in their underwear, sex scenes and lesbian kissing. The girls are beautiful and the cinematography is cool but the actual film is crap. Noel Clarke is fun to watch as an actor, but his writing leaves a lot to be desired. It really is like something the Disney channel would write just littered with swear words. Its a shame. I really did want to like this film but I was left so disappointed.

Ginger Snaps (2000)

A coming of age film... with werewolves
8 May 2010
I absolutely love this film. It is billed as a horror movie but I think that demeans the entire film. I like to think of it more as a coming of age movie, it just so happens that while coming of age, the lead happened to be bitten by a werewolf.

Ginger and Brigitte are two socially backwards sisters with a fascination with blood and death. While out hoping to play a prank on the 'cool' girl Ginger gets 'the curse' and then moments later is savagely attacked by a werewolf. From then her personality and appearance changes, she blames it on her period whilst Brigitte believes her sister is becoming a werewolf.

The concept sounds absolutely ridiculous but the dark, subtly twisted and almost camp way the story is told makes it so fun to watch. Its obvious low budget adds a grainy edge to the film too that compliments it.

Every detail is thought out for the best effect the scene needs. The school nurse is hilariously chirpy whilst delivering a graphic and disturbing description of the menstrual cycle whereas more tense scenes, such as the demise of Trina in the kitchen, are more heavy.

Emily Perkins and Katherine Isabelle shot right up my favourite actresses list with this film with their raw and miserable performances.

If you like your Rob Zombie horror porn slashers then you will be disappointed with this. If you want to watch a good film, then this is for you.

Gripping and disturbing
14 November 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I don't normally watch ITV dramas but this ones trailer appealed to me and so I decided to give this one a chance and I'm glad I did. The whole film kept me completely glued to the TV. Everything was so intense and suspenseful.

The young actress, Hannah Lochner who played Heather was excellent; she was creepy, disturbing, a sympathetic brat, manipulative but gave a really charismatic performance. She stole the show. She tackled all her scenes (and some were quite harsh) with ease and showed talent way beyond her years. One scene in particular when she is watching her mother get brutally murdered whilst hiding in the cupboard is so moving. She is definitely a star in the making.

The story itself was harrowing, a woman, Tess (unable to have children and unable to adopt in the UK after an attempted suicide) adopts two girls. The younger one, Grace quickly becomes a member of the family but the elder girl, Heather is a traumatised young child and Tess soon believes she is hiding a dark secret. The story is gripping and watch it just for Lochner's performance.

Mandy Steals The Show
20 June 2005
I love this TV show. Its dark theme is such a nice alternative from all the other cartoons on Cartoon Network. The series follows Billy and Mandy as they torment the Grim Reaper after coming to 'own' him after he attempted to take away Billy's pet hamster.

The idea of taking something as harrowing as death itself and turning it into a kids cartoon is a really good one and works extremely well. The fact that this show could so easily have been chilling really benefits it. If the theme was taken the other way and told darker this show would make a great film.

The character of Mandy in particular is so refreshing. In comparison to Billy who is basically an identikit of every single other cartoon character on the channel; stupid, clumsy etc, Mandy is a sinister little girl and so entertaining to watch. She is the perfect match for the Grim Reaper. You can always can count on her to do one horribly twisted little thing each episode is hysterical.

I strongly recommend this cartoon, if only to see the deadpan little Mandy. Shes so evil.

An Amazing Film
20 June 2005
I don't know where to start when praising this film, everything is perfect. I cant think of one negative thing. Robert Rodriguez has always been my favourite director and this is defiantly his best film so far. He stayed so true to Frank Millers books and as a result the film is completely original, you wouldn't have seen anything like it before.

The look of the film is gorgeous. Extremely glossy and taken straight from the novels it was based on. Filmed in black and white with just a few colours being played on.

The cast was brilliant in this film. Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke and Clive Owen were brilliant leads. Benicio Del Toro in particular was hysterical as Jackie Boy; he deserves a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the way he delivered the role. Other worthy mentions are Jessica Alba, Alexis Bledel and Devon Aoki (who probably had the coolest character in the whole film), they were stunning in the film. It was nice to see a cameo from Frank Miller in the film too.

This film is so violent and is breathtaking because of it. Throughout punches are deafening and every sight of blood is accompanied by sickening squelches. At one point someone is smacked in the head with a bar, you hear a hard slam as it does; solid on solid, where it hits the skull, it sounds extremely painful.

The soundtrack is equally outstanding. The music playing over the opening credits is especially gripping, perfect for the film.

I would recommend this film to anyone. It really is perfect. I can see why the content wouldn't appeal to some but go see it anyway for the visual treat.

Tarantino just gets better and better
2 June 2005
Quentin Tarantino has always claimed to love Japanese films and watching his prior works reflects this, only now has he completely taken the genre he loves and given it the Hollywood treatment and it really works. The Japanese cartoon sequence, in particular, showing the history of O-Ren was beautifully done and a lovely tribute to the culture that Tarantino owes the influence for the film. Throughout the films are various other acknowledgements and references to the Japanese film industry.

Uma Thurman, whom I never really have liked much, completely won me over with her performance as The Bride. She was all too aware that she had been cast as the 'superhero' and relished in it and clearly had fun living up to all stereotypes.

The fight choreography in this film was amazing, totally convincing and thrilling to watch. The scene in which The Bride takes out the entire Crazy 88 is breathtaking, the choreographer must have spent ages working that out and the final product is worth the price of admission in itself.

Someone who caught my eye in this film was Chiaki Kuriyama; she was amazing as O-Ren's bodyguard GoGo Yubari. For someone who was handed a ball and chain and told to master it in just three months she looked completely at ease with it and used it with great confidence. I hope to see more of her in Hollywood.

I have to mention the use of blood in this film too. The way it sprays out instead of trickling is pure Tarantino at his best.

An Amazing Film
28 May 2005
The film follows a headstrong, mermaid, Ariel as she falls in love, despite her fathers rules, with a human man, Eric. Because of her fathers hatred towards these 'cannibals' she makes a pact with a sea witch in order to be with him.

This is my definition of the perfect animated film. Everything about it is gorgeous. I remember seeing it for the first time and being blown away by the opening sequence. The appearance of the first merman against Alan Menkens score is beautifully done and the film just goes uphill from there.

The art, the songs, the characters, the music. Everything is perfectly done in this film.

Ursula is by far the scariest villain ever to cross the big screen. Based on a drag queen she really does completely freak out all audiences, I remember being terrified of her when I was little and I still feel the same way. The whole Poor Unfortunate Souls sequence is the scariest 'villain scene' I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. The rather bouncy song along with a haunting setting and shadows Hitchcock would be proud of is amazingly done and is only beaten by Ursula's terrifying performance later on in the film crawling along the ships deck after Ariel.

The soundtrack is spectacular. The score as I have mentioned before is superb and each of the songs is an instant classic, Part of Your World, Under the Sea, Kiss the Girl and Poor Unfortunate Souls are all songs everyone can recognise and sing-along too.

One last thing I have to give credit to is Sebastian the crab. He is one of the main reasons I love this film so much. The reggae crab will win you over. He is the perfect support to our heroine, dishing out lovely songs and providing us with may comic moments.

Disney really hit a high point with this film, and it totally deserves its status as one of the best animated films of all time. 10 out of 10.

Pretend You Don't See Her (2002 TV Movie)
1/10
Laughable
23 May 2005
This made-for-TV drama is terrible, basically. That one word sums it up. The acting is appalling, mixed with a barely there plot this film out stays its welcome two seconds in. I watched this film after a someone told me how laughably bad it was and they were right. The whole thing comes off like something a first year film student would churn out, a student who hadnt paid any attention to anything said that year.

And what is all this fuss about the little girl in it? She was probably the worst actress in this film, despite all the hype over her she cant even deliver a simple line without it sounding like its being fed to her. I'm sure there was another girl the casting crew could have hired instead of this poor child who was clearly only there as a result of a stage mum. The only way she can have all these good reviews is if shes putting them on here herself.

Stay away from this film, trust me. It is seriously a waste of time, there are far better better things you could be doing with your time like watching paint dry or counting grass in a meadow.

The Ring Two (2005)
Not to be taken seriously,
5 May 2005
The Ring Two: Now, no-one is expecting this film to be any good, its a sequel to a horror film, what do you expect? But I feel the need to stick up for it. The original was based on a hit Japanese film and opened to rave reviews, the second however only had a terrible Japanese sequel to work with and many people have already made up there minds about this film. Despite the opening scene coming across like the sort a first year media student would churn out the rest of the film is actually a treat. Naomi Watts reprises her role as Rachel Kellor and as expected, is extremely convincing. This time evil Samara is using young Aiden (David Dorfman) to play host as she reeks her revenge on Rachel for destroying her tape. It might sound like a cheap Exorcist rip-off and it most probably is, but it works, and as a popcorn movie is extremely entertaining to watch. Yes the film isn't perfect, a lot of it drags along and many of its 'jumps' fail to deliver anything more than a yawn but don't let this sway your opinion of the film. Apart from those flops for every three failed scares there is one really good jump moment and Samara crawling out of the well at end of the film is probably one of the most scary things you will ever see, and the whole flashback scene including Samara's mother attempting to drown her as a baby is extremely well done and terrifying to watch. David Dorfman's possessed child act is excellent and extremely unsettling too. Go see it, or at least rent it. I was practically dragged kicking and screaming into the cinema and I liked it.

An adorable film...
6 February 2005
Shirley Temple definitely deserved some of her popularity after this tailor-made vehicle. The film is as adorable as the young star. It follows Rebecca (Temple) as she tries to fulfill her dream of singing on a popular radio show. She does this with the help of a few adult friends who compliment Temple perfectly. Temple herself, shines in this film. Singing, dancing and acting she shows a natural talent for performing and clearly enjoys herself with this film. All in all I would recommend this film to anyone. It might not be the best Shirley Temple film but it will keep you entertained all the way through and the enchanting lead will captivate you.

So Fetch!
23 October 2004
Lol, I love this film. It handles the telling of the story of the 'girl world' really well. I'm pretty sure every girl whose ever watched this movie can relate to it. I know I can. The four leads were really good to. Lyndsay Lohan is really starting to make a name for herself and she does really well in this film. You can sympathize with her and even when shes a real bitch she has some charm.Rachel McAdams was perfectly cast as the Queen Bee, and was able to deliver an enchanting performance even when being an evil little byotch. I'm glad to see Lacey Chabert is still getting recognition and Amanda Seyfried was adorable as super-ditzy Karen This film is a must have for all girls and despite having quite a serious message sometimes it still manages to funny sometimes and remain light hearted. A few flaws would be that whoever played Janis was slightly annoying and Damian wasn't nearly gay enough but all in all I love this film. 8/20

I love it!
23 October 2004
This bubbly, feel good movie is perfect for a girls night in. A must for sleepover as it provides laughs and can be quite touching at times. This movie is definitely on my top 5 all time favourites. Alicia Silverstone is adorable as Cher in the leading role and I'm surprised she didn't carry on to have a successful film career as this was definitely a role she did proud, even if she did look a little to old to be 15 years old. Another interesting role in this film is that of Brittany Murphy who is unrecognisable as Tai. All in all this is a lovely, fun way to spend an hour and a half and I really recommend this film. Girls will love it! 9/10

Basquiat (1996)
Its alright
10 October 2004
This movie is watchable enough and has some great performances.

David Bowie surprised me as an actor, Benicio Del Toro had a small but memorable part and Michael Wincott was hilarious in a role very different to what he normally plays. However it does get a little boring after a while as there isn't much going on to keep you watching. The movie basically follows around graffiti artist, Jean Michel Basquiat in his quest for recognition. It will make fans of Michael Wincott though! I'd give it 5/10.

the new series is crap!
21 January 2004
i used to actually like this show but now they have 'updated' it and its terrible. its just a load of brats running around causing mayhem. While in the old series bernard helped people with his watch the new bernard just helps himself. The acting has never been great but now it sucks. Stay well away from this show, we don't want another series being released!

Holiday in the Sun (2001 Video)

Completly unrealistic!!!!
10 August 2003
This film is terrible. The whole movie is basically the girls lying on a beach wearing skimpy little bikinis while getting chatted up by boys.It would help if the movie was even slightly realistic, but its not. The twins don't act anything like real teenagers, they seem to be in love with themselves and think anything they do is adorable.

It starts off with them going to the bahamas (when they wanted to go Hawaii *gasp* OMG poor them!) in their fathers private jet and his limo. They then go to the poshest hotel in the bahamas and then spend the whole time kissing boys, shopping, wearing tiny outfits, swimming with dolphins, jet-skiing and drinking smoothies.

A very light plot about some antique theft or something is worked in there too but because the girls are always right and act like they are the top investigators on the island it gets irritating.

The most enjoyable part of the movie is when they steal a boat and even that is hopeless. They just happen to find the antiques at the very moment the police arrive and THEY ARE ALWAYS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING!!! They must be bloody phsycic or something.

And if you think the girls are annoying you should see the rest of the cast. The twins mum and some little girl esspecially. The whole film sucks and i reccomend that stay well away from this movie.

i liked it!
10 August 2003
As far as olsen films go, this one was really good. The film wasnt 100% about the girls and did well because of it. The acting was good in this film and the plot, though weak, was very entertaining. The twins excel in this film and deliver very charming, likable performances. They should definatly do more films like this one.

The actors who really make this film worth watching though, are those who play the two crooks after the girls. They are hilarious! It is really refreshing in an olsen film for someone else to get the good lines.

Apart from that the girls also didnt kiss a boy *gasp*, they didnt go shopping and they didnt use any of their silly teenage lines. They also didnt seem to be as full of themselves as they usually come across as on screen which really helped this film. All round this is a cute film, with cute characters and a cute plot. It may not be the best film ever made but its still very enjoyable and can be very funny at times.I recommend it for kids and any Olsen fans!
