Better than a lot of films, worse than even more
29 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I got this film on DVD the same day that I bought Crash. Both purchases were based on recommendations and reviews i had read. I watched Crash first and was absolutely stunned - a fantastic film, so i had high hopes for 'A History Of Violence'. I was sorely disappointed.

The idea behind the movie is a good one. A very good one. However, the film itself is a bad let down. The script is shockingly poor. Some of the dialogue is like it has been written by a 10 year old.

The mobsters are like characatures of mobsters. The kind of mobsters you might expect in a spoof movie. They are not believable in the slightest.

The acting (from everyone except the main characters) is bargain basement acting.

The sex scene on the stairs is totally unbelievable. He hits her, grabs her by the throat, pulls her down a couple of stairs, then makes like he is about to rape her and she gets turned on by this? Not in a thousand years would a woman get turned on by this.

This film was a huge disappointment.

Oh dear....

So disappointing....

Having been first a fan of the radio play, then a fan of the TV series and then a fan of the books, i have been looking forward to this film since i first heard it was being made. Last night, i made the trip to the cinema and settled down with my popcorn and coke.

And how i wished i had stayed at home and watched the telly.

There is a lot of good things about this film. Some genius funny touches and some 'spot-on' characterisations. But the film as a whole is a HUGE let down.

The good things: Slartibartfast - My favourite character in all adaptations of the story. And Bill Nighy is excellent.

The Guide - Stephan Fry is excellent. And the clips from The Guide are very funny Zaphod - very good. Just like I imagined him from the books.

One-Liners - some of the jokes are very witty. Good, dry, British humour.

The let-downs: Arthur Dent - Okay. Not poor, not great, but OK. Mind you, he was never my favourite character anyway.

Ford Prefect - awful acting. Truly awful. Wooden as wooden gets.

The film itself - So boring in the middle that i almost fell asleep. Not since 'Bad Boys' have i actually felt like leaving a cinema and finding something else to do.

I gave the film 6/10. Mostly because i liked some of the humour and characters. If you haven't read the books or seen the TV series, stay well away from this film. Without some prior knowledge you'll leave the cinema thinking "what on earth was that pile of poo?".

A frightening, but fantastic film
15 January 2005
In brief (i like to keep reviews short - everyone i know just skips over the long ones and doesn't read them!!), i really enjoyed this film.

Although i liked The Sixth Sense, i read reviews of Signs when it was released and never really fancied it. I gave it a miss when it was in the cinema and then again when it was released on DVD. Last week it was on TV so i decided to watch it....

What a great film. Not what i expected at all, but a really good film. And frightening too, I haven't been that scared by a film in years. There really are some edge of your seat, hair raising moments.

Truly enjoyable - 8/10.

Great film - a real tearjerker
22 July 2004
I watched this film about 20 years along with another Italian release 'Last Feelings'. Both films are extremely powerful tearjerkers and were released together in the UK. They affected me so much that I think about them to this day and have recently been trying to track down copies of them - this seems to be impossible, but i still remember them quite vividly. I dare you to watch this film without shedding a tear. Especially the fairground scene at the end. Heartbreaking.

Powerful tearjerker
22 July 2004
I last saw this film about 20 years ago when i was about 10 years old. It affected me so much that I remember it to this day. An incredibly powerful film - a real tear jerker. I've been searching for a copy of this film to watch it again, but it seems to be really rare. I can't find one anywhere. If you do get a chance to watch it, do. It is excellent. Also watch a film called 'Last snows Of Spring'. They were released together in the UK and this is also an excellent film. Another tearjerker, but equally powerful. I dare you to watch either without shedding a tear.

Much Better Thank Expected
30 May 2004
I really enjoyed this film. It's not the kind of thing I normally go for, but I enjoyed it from start to finish. It stays pretty close to Homer's 'Iliad', although they made Patroclus into Achilles' cousin instead of lover (can't have a big, tough movie hero thats gay now can we!).

Hector is a great character, and Eric Bana plays him pretty well.

Orlando Bloom is as to be expected.... he looks good, but his acting is pretty appalling. This doesn't detract from the film though. The only negative about this film is the soundtrack. It's like a constant wailing throughout the whole movie. Really annoying.

Great Film, Loved it
26 August 2003
Don't be fooled by the fact that this is a Disney film rated 12A - this film is just as much fun for adults. I'm not normally into films like this, but I loved Pirates Of The Caribbean. Johnny Depp is absolutely fantastic - his character 'Captain John Sparrow' is a screen masterpiece. Great first scene where you see him standing on top of a mast, and you imagine that it's some big pirate ship and then the camera pans out and it's a tiny little rowing boat with a small sail that is sinking. Not an intellectually demanding film, but 2 hours of sheer fun and escapism.

Brilliant

What can i say? I loved this film.

It's definately not suited to all tastes (it's a quiet, thoughtful film rather than an 'action' movie), but I really enjoyed it.

The characters are well developed and the story is moving. It's one of the few films I've seen where I actually cared about some of the characters.

Hell, I even liked Gwyneth Paltrow in it. Now that is saying something!

Excellent Film, one of the top 10 films of all time.

That was a lie.

I am thoroughly ashamed to admit that I actually sat through this film right to the end. I held out incase it had a great ending or a twist in the plot, but no, there was nothing. The storyline was thinner than Calista Flockharts arms and the acting was worse than my daughters school play.

This film appears to be nothing more than a crass attempt to get porn into the 'mainstream', but it fails miserably. If I wanted to watch unattractive failed models prance around butt naked, I could get something of far superior quality from my local adult shop out of the bargain bin.
