Finding Joe (2011)
Great Experience
What stood out to me most about this film is the cinematography. I don't usually notice these things, but it really stood out. The shots were well executed, and allowed the message of the documentary to flow smoothly; with visual representations of the message. I had heard about the book The Hero With A Thousand Faces, and nothing but great things. Then, when I came across Finding Joe, and saw it was about the Hero's Journey, I was intrigued -- and pleased with what I found. Not only does it provide in- depth interviews from experts on both spirituality and success in life, but also delves into the workings of mythology, specifically the Hero's Journey, and the most fascinating aspect of this documentary -- how it applies to us. I really enjoyed this documentary and recommend a viewing!
Films of Fury: The Kung Fu Movie Movie (2011)
I loved the flick
Found out about Films of Fury through some Kung-Fu fan friends of mine, and thought I'd look into it... It was truly awesome. As a film enthusiast, I learned a lot about Kung-Fu in film, its history and influence on pop-culture. This chronicles Kung-Fu films as far back as "The Magnificent Butcher" and comes to more recent films like Kung Fu Panda. Ric Meyers (the writer) claimed that Kung Fu Panda is the greatest Kung-Fu film that America has produced, due to its complete representation of "The Full Glory" of Kung Fu... Spirituality and the betterment of one's skill. I learned A LOT. I write screenplays and will produce movies one day, so this is a film I'll keep at hand whenever the DVD comes out. You can catch it on-demand, it truly is a hidden gem.
The Gift (2010)
Spiritual Journeys and Their Milestones
On my free time, I like investing in my personal growth. Sometimes I get this done by watching documentaries such as What the BLEEP, The Secret, and read books such as Eckhart Tolle's the Power of Now and New Earth, but nothing has struck such a chord with me like Discover The Gift did. It sheds light on our connection with each other, and even stars the Dalai Lama sharing his thoughts on the power of compassion and love. What I love most about this documentary is the several different approaches, ideas, and speakers that are featured providing a way in for not just me but others who have different views and ideas about their experiences. I usually stick to either the documentary, or the book – not both. But there were lots of advantages to having the book format, most notably the exercises in the book, the mandalas, and of course its portability. The "re-watchability" value of Discover The Gift is high – it's extremely informative and covers a wide-range of topics that are engaging still, even as stand-alone pieces.
Midnight Movie (2008)
Awesome Horror Movie
This movie caught me off guard. Before watching the movie, I thought it'd be like any other horror movie, but to my surprise it involved a lot of interesting characters who really challenge your initial impression.(my favorite being the tough biker dude) Most notably was the end, which is unusual for horror movies and absolutely made this one stand out. This film does many things that engage the conversations created by previous horror films, there's even a movie within the movie, some campiness is involved which is always fun for movie buffs, and totally sets it up for the gory slashy goodness that Midnight Movie delivers.
