Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)
The worst movie in the series
Not sure how the special effects in the first movie were better than the effects in this one. The storyline was terrible, the direction (sorry Shatner) was terrible and the acting was terrible. It was like everyone phoned it in. The movies before and after this were awesome. I think this was just a cash grab. The actor playing the villain was the worst casting choice I have ever seen in a Star Trek movie, he was so wooden and stale and I don't think I have seen him in anything since.
Nimoy proved himself a much better director than Shatner. Don't get me wrong, I love William Shatner and believe him to be the best Captain in the entire Star Trek universe. He flopped this one hard. The Special effects were so terrible, that it was comical. You will see the worst of them when you see the shuttle dock in the shuttle bay. It is actually hilarious. Anyway, it is really best to avoid this movie entirely, unless you just want the accomplishment of seeing them all.
Kid Colter (1985)
Even as a kid, this movie was odd and disjointed.
I am writing this review from memory, as I have not seen it since the 80s. It really felt like someone took two random scripts and combined them, decided to playing "eenie meanie miny mo" on picking the cast, instead of auditioning. Then gave it to some high school kid to direct. Some of the nature photography was pleasant, but in the Northwest that is a pretty easy thing to do.
The editing was terrible, the cinematography was mediocre, and the film was absent of any sort of talent. Yet, there was a general curiosity of how it would conclude. In the end, I felt robbed of 3 hours only to discover that the movie was only an hour and forty-one minutes.
Nothing But Trouble (1991)
One of the worst movies I have ever sen
This movie was such an incomprehensible mess. I have no idea how they got these normally talented actors to participate in such a horribly conceived bomb. It consists of a cameo by a terrible third-rate rap group. I don't even remember their name, just that they were one hit wonders. The conclusion of the movie involves Chevy Chase jumping through a wall and leaving a complete outline of his body through it. The screenplay was so bad, that the dialogue makes you cringe in every scene. This is one of those movies that somehow got a wealth of talent and they tried their hardest to try and perform in a movie that was doomed.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
A fun movie, which is all we want and expect
People are obviously not going to this movie for a cerebral experience. They are going, to have fun. Top Gun: Maverick does this with flying colors. They give plenty of nods to the original, with flashbacks, music and scenes that pay homage to the first. The characters were well developed and the story satisfying. MILD SPOILER: My only complaint with the film is it's use of Deus Ex Machina. It is a story mechanism that I have always disliked. Feels lazy. Despite that, this movie has great action and is incredibly fun.
The Goonies (1985)
A classic film
I saw this movie in the theater during its original release and it has continued to be one of my favorite movies of all time. Whenever this film appears on television I find myself helpless to turn the channel or shutoff the TV. I later found out that my father was good friends with Curtis Hanson, who played Elgin Perkens (Troys Father). He gave me a few little in-depth stories about the parts of the movie he was involved in and I found it quite interesting. I have seen this movie countless times and I was very pleased when the DVD was released and there were previously deleted scenes added. I love having a film that you have loved for years and years and then a special release comes out with scenes that you had never scene before. Anyone who has not seen this movie should put it on the priority list.
