Pushing the Limits of What Man and Audience Can Bear
23 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie freaked me out the first time I saw it. I couldn't even look at a hard-boiled egg for weeks afterward. It's taken me more than a decade to come back to see it a second time. It's almost a dare from director to audience--how much can you bear to watch, eh? How much sex could the man bear to take? How far gone was Abe Sada's mind? The second time through, I was ready for the hard-boiled egg. I wasn't ready to notice the scene where--in a dream, of course--Ms. Abe molests a child.

On a lighter note, when I went to Japan in 1996, I found mentioning Abe Sada's name elicited a humorous reaction even then. At the time, it was similar to saying "Lorena Bobbitt." Hands went unconsciously to protect the, er, "toys."

Space Amoeba (1970)
Iron Chef Meets Dolomite
8 September 2004
The theme ingredients are octopus and kitsch.

This is a great movie for an evening of friends, microwave popcorn, fizzy drinks (your choice), and a kitschy romp that'll make you laugh 'til you cry. If the "Iron Chef" voice-overs make you laugh, these will make you scream for mercy.

Make it a double-feature: complete your evening of low-budget deadpan kitsch with a screening of "Avenging Disco Godfather."

Allez Cuisine!

PS: IMDb says, "Sorry, you must provide at least 10 lines in your comment. Please return to the edit window (or use the BACK option if this isn't a new window)." There! I've made my quota!

Cyborg 009 (2001–2002)
Cool Anime
26 August 2003
This is an engaging story that involves some good-hearted rebel cyborgs versus the big corporate machine...in every sense of the robotic and figurative word. It's an adventure that includes a social message, even though it wasn't written for the US audience.

Poor 008, though. His English voice actor must be learning the business. Maybe his reading will get smoother as more episodes are revealed.

The closing theme, "Genesis of Next" by globe is one of my J-pop/trance/dance favorites. IMHO, it's worth tracking down the single or globe's "Global Trance" CD. It was a really neat surprise to hear it on my telly!

Great Story; Bad Pronunciations
26 August 2003
The story line is good ol' fashioned anime at its best. However, I cringe every time someone utters the name Urameshi and pronounces it "YU-RA-MEH-SHEE." Urameshi doesn't start with the "yu" syllable. But that's just me, a former student of the Japanese language. Sigh.
