Precious Cargo (2016)
I've watched 11 DTV Bruce Willis movies so far, and this is my favorite
This movie is actually a blast. It's stupid, Over the top, and cheesy. But MPG is hilarious, the supporting cast is actually well fleshed out, they aren't just cardboard cutouts. The story is fine, it's nothing to write home about, and Bruce is only in like 11 minutes if the movie, but if you're watching straight to video Bruce Willis movies, then you already know at you're getting yourself into.
This was a cut above them all. I've recently decided, given his diagnosis, to watch all 38 of the direct to video movies he's made that I haven't seen. This is number 11 in that journey, and easily the best of the group.
The target audience for this movie is the kind of people that like pulpy trash, and this movie knows exactly what it is. It's 85 minutes without credits and worth it if you're into the cheaply made DTV Brucey Bruce films.
The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
Absolutely stunning
I went into this series knowing that the shoe was going to have to take some liberties from the game. I accept that. But I had no clue they were going to take a crumbled up piece of paper and create one of the most devastatingly brilliant hour and twenty minutes of television ever.
Deviations from the game introduce us to Frank, played brilliant, and Bill, also played brilliantly. Bill isn't the over the top mentally ill kinda guy the game made him out to be, but a quiet prepper who's found solace in the tranquility of life. Until he meets his lover Frank.
The use of time in this episode is what makes it perfect. We get 20 years of character and depth and how it's interwoven into the lives of the chargers we all love. It's a game changer for storytelling, considering the tragic Shakespearean end (and biggest shift from the games) with the mutual suicide of the beloved characters bill and frank. Genius all around. Bravo to the team behind this. This is how you adapt a work of art.
The Last of Us: When You're Lost in the Darkness (2023)
They absolutely nailed this
It was so difficult to make this work, given how most people watching this have played the games over and over. They not only captured the magic of the opening scene, they surpassed it. Even knowing what happens, I was still terrified. And the hardest part I thought they would struggle with is the pacing between the opening and when the story "starts." They did a great job at retooling the "tutorial" section of the game to fit with the show. Some shortcuts were taken, naturally, but they made it flow brilliantly, and I am in awe is the camerawork and the storytelling.
Blown away. Astounding start to what could possibly be one of the greatest seasons of television ever. The next 8 weeks waiting will be excruciatingly difficult.
Black Summer (2019)
How is this so low rated?
The structure of this show is magnificent. The pilot gets you set for the characters and does a brilliant job at introducing them, the. Every episode from then on out is edge of your seat drama. This is not a typical infected show. It's very story driven and character heavy. Lots of dialogue free moments, and minimal set pieces until the end. Every episode feels unique and different from the last, and it all builds and builds upon itself to deliver a powerful finale episode (the shortest of the lot at only 20 minutes). It tells a beginning, middle, and end. No loose ends, no cliffhangers. It's a story of these people, beginning to end.
This show is unforgiving and intense. Don't fall in love with anyone, like a Tell Tale game or the Walking Dead. When you think you have it figured out, it pulls a 180 and hits you with something else. If you're a fan of the genre, this is a show done right. The episode mostly shot in the car, the episode with the diner, and the episode with the school are some of the best of the series, legit decisions and consequences are made that shift the show all together. The episodes get shorter as they go on, starting at around 30-40 minutes and then 20-30 towards the end. Very bingable show at only 8 episodes. Must watch!
The Haunting of Hill House: Two Storms (2018)
Best episode of television I've seen in years!
This was by far one of the most beautifully shot episodes of television in recent memory. It's seamlessly one take (it does cut a few times towards the end, as well as transition beautifully to different times as the show has been doing). The imagery is gorgeous and has some very disturbing shots, but the thing that makes this so magical is the family drama that unfolds in this episode. Can't wait to see how the season ends.
Why Stop Now? (2012)
Wonderful little indie
This was one of those little gems that come around every now and then. Why Stop Now tells the story of a young man auditioning for a music conservatory, but before that he has to check his mother into rehab. In order for that to happen, though, she needs dirty urine. When the two have a run in with his mother's drug dealer, he kidnaps them for the day so he can obtain drugs from a Spanish speaking supplier (the son speaks fluent Spanish). Everything that ensues afterwords leads the group down a hilarious and sometimes dramatic road.
The writing in this film is very sharp and original. The characters are written beautifully, and The actors really go to different places with them. This film is fresh, original, and carries a heavy heart. Tracy Morgan gives his best performance yet as Sprinkles, an ex high school runner who got injured, so he entered The drug dealing world with his business partner, Black.
This is a must see, everyone check it out. Perfect dramedy.
